People with visual impairments often struggle to create content that relies heavily on visual elements, particularly when conveying spatial and structural information. Existing accessible drawing tools, which construct images line by line, are suitable for simple tasks like math but not for more expressive artwork. On the other hand, emerging generative AI-based text-to-image tools can produce expressive illustrations from descriptions in natural language, but they lack precise control over image composition and properties. To address this gap, our work integrates generative AI with a constructive approach that provides users with enhanced control and editing capabilities. Our system, AltCanvas, features a tile-based interface enabling users to construct visual scenes incrementally, with each tile representing an object within the scene. Users can add, edit, move, and arrange objects while receiving speech and audio feedback. Once completed, the scene can be rendered as a color illustration or as a vector for tactile graphic generation. Involving 14 blind or low-vision users in design and evaluation, we found that participants effectively used the AltCanvas's workflow to create illustrations.

the development of e-Science (cyberScience, Grid, etc.) is starting to become a reality with formalised data resources, services on demand, domain-specific search engines, digital repositories, etc. Increasingly STM 1 information will be contained in compound XML documents, representing scientific communication (articles, theses, repository entries, etc.). In physical sciences such as chemistry, materials science, engineering, physics, earth sciences, these "datuments" [1] normally contain hypertext, graphics, tables, graphs and numerical data, mathematical objects and relationships. In addition they may also contain domain-specific content such as chemical formula and reactions, thermodynamic and mechanical properties, electric, magnetic and optical properties. Among the domain-specific languages, CML (Chemical Markup Language) is the oldest and broadest, and is now being actively used for publishing by the Royal Society of Chemistry (Project Prospect [2]) which gives an idea of what chemistry in datuments can look like. CML has had to develop the domain-specific objects (molecules, atoms, bonds, spectra, crystallography, etc.) and the relationships between them. However, due to the text-based nature of early XML, it has also had to design an implement domain-independent infrastructure which can support much of physical science. Originally called STMML [3] it supports data types (float, integer, complex, etc.), data structures (arrays, lists, matrices, etc.), geometrical concepts (points, planes, lines, etc.) and scientific units of measurement. In addition CML bases much of its flexibility one usercreated dictionaries (ontologies) which are hyperlinked from objects in the datuments. It is now clear that the domain-independent parts of CML (and by extension some other markup languages in physical science) are loosely isomorphic with approaches in MathML and OMDOC. If a synthesis can be found, then CML can happily forget about the "non-chemistry" knowing

A computer program for the entry and maintenance of a medical knowledge base directly by a domain expert for a neurosurgical clinic is presented. Four independent hierarchies a tissue-hierarchy, a location hierarchy, a disease type hierarchy and a hierarchy with a controlled medical vocabulary are used to specify a disease. Such a disease profile consists of various property entries which build the basis for the automatic generation of the rules for the expert system.

this paper is concerned withthe issue of adjusting the complexity, content and assistance in interactive learning environments (ILEs). In particular, it describes the structure and evaluation of the learner model implemented within VIS (the Vygotskian Instructional System). this software explores the way that Vygotsky's Zone of Proximal Development can be used in the design of learner models. this theoretical foundation requires the system to adopt the role of a more able assistant for a learner, It must provide appropriately challenging activities and the right quantity and quality of assistance. the learner model must track boththe learner's capability and her potential in order to maintain the appropriate degree of collaborative assistance. Within VIS the learner model is a Bayesian Belief Model overlay of the domain knowledge structure. Air evaluation of the system illustrates that the approach adopted by VIS promotes the construction of productive interactions withthe majority of learners, across a range of abilities. the learner model within VIS is in effect an operational definition of the ZPD of each learner who interacts withthe system.

Clinicians implicitly incorporate the complementarity of multi-modal data for disease diagnosis. Often a varied order of importance for this heterogeneous data is considered for personalized decisions. Current learning-based methods have achieved better performance with uniform attention to individual information, but a very few have focused on patient-specific attention learning schemes for each modality. Towards this, we introduce a model which not only improves the disease prediction but also focuses on learning patient-specific order of importance for multi-modal data elements. In order to achieve this, we take advantage of LSTM-based attention mechanism and graph convolutional networks (GCNs) to design our model. GCNs learn multi-modal but class-specific features from the entire population of patients, whereas the attention mechanism optimally fuses these multi-modal features into a final decision, separately for each patient. In this paper, we apply the proposed approach for disease prediction task for Parkinson's and Alzheimer's using two public medical datasets.
We articulate a framework for using computational modeling to coherently integrate the design of science and engineering curricular experiences. We describe how this framework informs the design of the Water Runoff Ch...

the main focus of the proposed approach in this paper is to provide to CSCL users personalized and summarized feedback on the completed collaborative learning activities. the main purpose of this approach is to improve CSCL environments through the provision of a Motivation Booster by monitoring the users´ progress in the system. the implementation of the booster is embedded in two specific systems: the Learning Management System (LMS) known as Moodle and a CSCL called KnowCat. Several research studies are performed withthe aim to test both implementations of the Motivation Booster in the mentioned systems. these research studies are carried out with groups of students and teachers from the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid (Spain) and from the Universidad Pontificia Bolivariana (Monteria, Colombia).

Business process simulation plays an important role for enterprise business process re-engineering. this paper proposes a new algorithm to dynamically select a critical path with multiple constraints for enterprise process cooperative scheduling within cooperative business simulation systems. the proposed algorithm is based on Dynamic Programming and Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP), and has been validated through a prototype implementation with case studies.
