Withthe aim of improving the design efficiency and optimizing the design process, a new cad method of automatic design for 3D tread patterns based on semantics was proposed. the concept of tire-pattern semantics is introduced, then differentiated tire tread by different semantics, according to the division result, treads designing method are given. then 3D tread pattern automatic creating, chamfered designing, intersection processing of tire-treads. the related algorithms and principles for realization and the ways for solution were proposed. the feasibility of the related algorithms was verified by computer implementations, and the results show that the system can accomplish the automatic inspection of common tread patterns efficiently and intelligently.

this paper presents a new model for simulating a virtual Chinese hair brush using Camshaft Curve, a novel analytic curve proposed in the paper to define the shape of brush stroke. Camshaft Curve is delicately designed to be user friendly and can easily capture the shape of real brush stroke thanks to the flexible and feasible coefficients arrangement. the process of pigment transfer, which is always simply simulated by other brush model, are also modeled using discrete stochastic process. A software based on the brush model has been developed and tested, which could be used for creating Chinese calligraphic artwork. Several samples created by the software were obtained and the differences between the imitation and real artwork are perceptually invisible.

this paper propose an improved supervised method for retinal vessel segmentation based on Extreme Learning Machine (ELM). Firstly, a 36-D feature vector is extracted for each pixel of the fundus image consisting of local features, morphological features and divergence of vector fields. then a matrix for pixels of the training set using the feature vector and the manual segmentation is constructed as the input of the ELM. Finally a classifier is obtained to segment the retinal vessels. the method is evaluated withthe DRIVE database and the average accuracy is 0.9581. And the running time is greatly decreased by using ELM. It is applicable for computer-aided diagnosis and disease screening.

For designers, digital manufacturing machines, such as laser cutters and CNC machines, support rapid prototyping of low-cost, low fidelity physical models. these machines can be used as an alternative to additive manufacturing. Unfortunately there are few cad tools that provide access for fabrication of complex 3D geometries withthese 2D fabrication machines. the literature contains a few novel systems that generate planar structures as models built of layered material or as interlocking planes with unique joining features. In this paper, a Fresh Press modeler is presented as a novel system that generates tailored geometry for ease of assembly. A major benefit of Fresh Press is the ability to produce fabrication data leading to a watertight planar structure. Assembly between planes is sustained by interlocking finger joints generated on each planar component of the model. the Fresh Press modeler parameterizes planar surfaces and interlocking features for user control and model quality. Several studies report that many novice engineers result to be skilled in cad but poor in knowledge of the basics, visualization and spatial skills and ability in freehand sketching. there is a debate on if such lack of fundamentals dues or not to the increasing role of cad and the decreasing role of manual drawing in the basic courses of engineering graphics. this study aimed to investigate the issues related to the use of cad and manual drawing in teaching engineering graphics fundamentals by a review of the literature of the Engineering designgraphics Journal and the international Journal of Technology and design Education from 2000 to date. It was found that current students: have a lower initial level of knowledge and experience;have little chance to develop sketching and visualization skills if trained only by cad;and their assessment usually focuses more on cad skills than on the knowledge of the basics. Solutions proposed to such issues are: introductory courses of manual drawing at college and high schools;assessment of students' initial skills;and tests more focused on the knowledge of the rules and basics of engineering graphics language.
