Cloud computing is emerging as the next big step in the design and deployment of an increasing number of distributed applications. On the other hand, smartphones are ruling the day in today's Post-PC world and are emerging as better players in offering services to consumers. Concurrent with the widespread adoption of cloud computing, smartphones have been clubbed with the power of cloud computing, thus giving rise to a new term called the Mobile Cloud computing. With the mobile cloud, users connect to their applications and data which reside on some remote data centers, instead of on their local mobile devices. Users pay only for the connection process and the services they access. this paper presents the design and implementation of construction and configuration of cloud infrastructure using Eucalyptus and KVM, and invoking a cloud service from an Android phone. the cloud service used in the case study is a Video on Demand SaaS streaming service which aims at playing a large video onto a mobile phone.

Real-time Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) detection and monitoring are important for the society in terms of improvement in citizens' health conditions and of reduction in mortality and healthcare costs. this paper proposes an easy, cheap, and portable approach for monitoring patients with OSA. It is based on singlechannel ECG data, and on the automatic offline extraction, from a database containing ECG information about the monitored patient, of explicit knowledge under the form of a set of IF...thEN rules containing typical parameters derived from Heart Rate Variability (HRV) analysis. this set of rules can be exploited in our realtime mobile monitoring system: ECG data is gathered by a wearable sensor and sent to a mobile device, where it is processed in real time, HRV-related parameters are computed from it, and, if their values activate some of the rules describing occurrence of OSA, an alarm is automatically produced. the approach has been tested on a well-known literature database of OSA patients. Rules are obtained which are specific for each patient. Numerical results have shown the effectiveness of the approach, and the achieved sets of rules evidence its user-friendliness. Furthermore, the method has been compared against other well-known classifiers.

the current explosion in sensor data has brought us to a tipping point in the intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance technologies. this problem can be addressed through the insertion of novel artificial intelligence-based methodologies. the scope of the problem addressed in this position paper is to propose a novel computational intelligence methodology, which can learn to map distributed heterogeneous data to actionable meaning for dissemination. the impact of this approach is that it will provide a core solution to the tasking, collection, processing, exploitation, and dissemination (TCPED) problem. It will serve to demonstrate the viability of the methodologies core concepts and thus justify a scaled-up investment in its development. Consequently, the expected operational performance improvements include the capture and reuse of analyst expertise, an order of magnitude reduction in required bandwidth, and, for the user, prioritized intelligence based on the knowledge derived from distributed heterogeneous sensing.

Summary form only given. As data scientists, we live in interesting times. Data has been the No. 1 fast growing phenomenon on the Internet for the last decade. Big data analytics have the potential to reveal deep insights hidden by big data that exceeds the processing capacity of existing systems, such as peer influence among customers, revealed by analyzing shoppers' transactions, social and geographical data. In the past 40 years, data was primarily used to record and report business activities and scientific events, and in the next 40 years data will be used also to derive new insights, to influence business decisions and to accelerate scientific discovery. the key challenge is to provide the right platforms and tools to make reasoning of big data easy and simple. In this keynote talk, I will explore reuse opportunities and challenges from multiple dimensions towards delivering big data analytics as a service. I will illustrate by example the importance and challenges of utilizing programmable algorithm abstractions for many seemingly domain-dependent data analytics tasks. Another reuse opportunity is to exploit unconventional data structures and big data processing constructs to simplify and speed up the big data processing.

Despite significant advancements in wireless sensor networks (WSNs), energy conservation remains one of the most important research challenges. Proper organization of nodes (clustering) is one of the major techniques to expand the lifespan of the whole network through aggregating data at the cluster head. the cluster head is the backbone of the entire cluster. that means if a cluster head fails to accomplish its function, the received and collected data by cluster head can be lost. Moreover, the energy consumption following direct communications from sources to base stations will be increased. In this paper, we propose a type-2 fuzzy based self-configurable cluster head selection (SCCH) approach to not only consider the selection criterion of the cluster head but also present the cluster backup approach. thus, in case of cluster failure, the system still works in an efficient way. the novelty of this protocol is the ability of handling communication uncertainty, which is an inherent operational aspect of sensor networks. the experiment results indicate SCCH performs better than other recently developed methods.

During the last decade, overlay networks based on distributed hash tables have become the de facto standard for data management in Peer-to-Peer (P2P) systems, with Chord being its most prominent representative. Essentially, with its fully decentralized approach, Chord avoids any bottleneck and single point of failure while guaranteeing data to be retrieved in O(log N) hops in a network consisting of N nodes. By optimizing the number of hops for data access, Chord implicitly assumes that all connections between nodes have comparable bandwidth and latency characteristics. However, in heterogeneous, mobile P2P systems that consist of both mobile and fixed nodes, this is not the case. Moreover, due to the mobility of nodes, connection parameters can dynamically change. Especially in mobile P2P applications where low latency for data access is essential, such as in emergency management, routing should aim at reducing the overall latency, rather than the number of hops in the network. In this paper, we present COMPASS, a protocol for efficient data access in heterogeneous mobile Chord-based P2P systems. COMPASS takes into account that the network latency of nodes in a mobile P2P network may significantly differ and thus aims at minimizing the overall latency, even if this necessitates more hops in the network. this is done by probing the network and by maintaining, in addition to Chord's finger table, at each peer a data structure called COMPASS table. We present in detail the initialization and maintenance of the COMPASS table that dynamically adapts to changing node characteristics. Evaluation results show that COMPASS outperforms standard Chord-based routing and reduces the overall latency in heterogeneous P2P networks consisting of fixed and mobile nodes.

In most of today's healthcare and AAL scenarios a multitude of data is recorded by different sensors for various purposes. By definition, this data is mostly personal and can be assigned to certain persons, which again makes it interesting for shady data miners, hackers, or even health insurance companies. thus, this data needs special care regarding privacy and security. On the other hand, if the systems are spread over a larger area, a remote access to such systems is essential for the operator. At least a basic system monitoring should be possible and backups to a distant location are beneficial if the distributed systems fail. In this paper we provide concepts and solutions how in distributed installations of personal AAL platforms privacy and security can be preserved, while remote backup and restore functionality and remote system monitoring can be provided. © 2012 IEEE.

Today's large scale distributed systems are characterized by strong dynamics caused by the inherent unreliability of their constituting elements (e.g. process and link failures, processes joining or leaving the system). this continuous dynamism has a strong negative impact on distributed algorithms designed to work on such systems. there is need for providing proper quality of service (QoS) and security to healthcare traffic in the network in a healthcare environment. In addition, there is need for global visibility of healthcare related communications or transactions between various entities (applications, information systems and devices). there are three major factors that make this challenging: 1) healthcare network traffic is shared by other non-healthcare traffic, 2) there are plethora of healthcare information systems, devices and modalities with respective plethora of protocols and message formats, 3) healthcare network with its wide varieties of information systems, devices and modalities may be widely distributed (across various departments and wide-area network segments). To provide proper QoS and security in the midst of these challenges we bring healthcare application protocol and message related intelligence in the network, thus creating a logical overlay network (we call IHON: Intelligent Healthcare Overlay Network). © 2012 IEEE.

Cloud computing has been adopted by health-care industry for their data's storage, manipulation, and secured sharing needs. However, cloud's distributed nature can be exploited to the use of scientific applications that are designed for health-care data evaluation. these scientific applications, such as, Medical Imaging, Gene and Protein annotation, Mapdrug therapy and Clinical Decision Support Systems (CDSS), require high-performance messaging libraries with minimum computational and communication overhead, and efficient resource utilization. the proposed High Performance Java Sockets (HPJS) encapsulates the needs of high-performance messaging of scientific applications for cloud platforms. HPJS effectively uses Java's socket implementation for high-performance inter-process communication. With single-copy protocol, thread re-usability and reduced communication overhead, HPJS can perform messaging twice as fast to conventional buffered-base communication libraries. © 2012 IEEE.
