In this position paper, we present ideas about creating a next generation framework towards an adaptive interface for data communication and visualisation systems. Our objective is to develop a system that accepts large data sets as inputs and provides user-centric, meaningful visual information to assist owners in making sense of their data collection. the proposed framework comprises four stages: (i) the knowledge base compilation, where we search and collect existing state-of-the-art visualisation techniques per domain and user preferences;(ii) the development of the learning and inference system, where we apply artificial intelligence techniques to learn, predict and recommend new graphic interpretations (iii) results evaluation;and (iv) reinforcement and adaptation, where valid outputs are stored in our knowledge base and the system is iteratively tuned to address new demands. these stages, as well as our overall vision, limitations and possible challenges are introduced in this article. We also discuss further extensions of this framework for other knowledge discovery tasks.

this paper is motivated by analyzing questionnaire data that collected from patients who suffer from an orphan disease. In order to decrease misdiagnoses and shorten the diagnosis time for people who have not been diagnosed yet but already have a long history of health problems, a research project about using questionnaire mode and data analysis methods to predetermine orphan disease has been set up and questionnaires were designed based on experiences from patients who already have a diagnosis. the main focus of this work is to visualize answering patterns that characterize patients with a specific orphan disease, which questions are most useful to distinguish between certain orphan diseases and how well an answering pattern of a specific patient fits to the general pattern of those patients who share the same disease. We borrowfrom the concept of sequence logos, commonly used in genetics to visualize the conservation of nucleotides in a strand of DNA or RNA. Instead of nucleotides, we have possible answers from a question. Our proposed visualization techniques are not limited to questionnaires on orphan diseases but also can be applied to any questionnaire survey with closed-ended questions for which we are interested in answering characteristics of different groups.

this report presents a numerical analysis study on the shape effects of prolate and oblate ellipsoid projectiles on the performance of spacecraft shields conducted in support of the Orbital Debris Program Office at the NASA Johnson Space Center with the Hypervelocity Impact Technology (HVIT) group [1]. the study served as an independent analysis of the experimental results obtained by the Ernst-Mach Institute, who conducted hypervelocity impact (HVI) tests using shaped-projectiles against a dual-wall Whipple shield to develop ballistic limit equations (BLE) with shape effects. the HVI have been simulated via the three-dimensional, nonlinear-structural-dynamics, simulation tool, Cth, which has been developed by Sandia National Laboratories to treat shock-wave propagation and large-deformation phenomena. the results from the numerical simulations for the sphere and prolate ellipsoid projectiles indicate numerical simulations are a viable tool for conducting HVI analyses, however, significant differences between the Cth models and published EMI test data for the oblate projectiles point to issues in modeling the impact physics of oblate ellipsoid geometries [2]. Consequently, further analysis should be performed to solve the problem in modeling these oblate projectile impacts. the unmodified BLE for spheres and modified BLE for prolate ellipsoids reasonably predict failure of a Whipple shield at low impact velocities, but based on the obtained data may need to be adjusted for velocities between 4 and 8 km/s. SQL is the de-facto language for big-data analytics. Despite the cost of distributed SQL execution being dominated by disk and network I/O, we find that state-of-the-art optimizers produce plans that are not I/O optimal. For a significant fraction of queries (25% of popular benchmarks like TPCDS), a large amount of data is shuffled redundantly between different pairs of stages. the fundamental reason for this limitation is that optimizers do not have the right set of primitives to perform reasoning at the map-reduce level that can potentially identify and eliminate the redundant I/O. this paper proposes RESIN, an optimizer extension that adds first-class support for map-reduce reasoning. RESIN uses a novel technique called Generalized Sub-Query Fusion that identifies sub-queries computing on overlapping data, and fuses them into the same map-reduce stages. the analysis is general;it does not require that the sub-queries be syntactically the same, nor are they required to produce the same output. Sub-query fusion allows RESIN to sometimes also eliminate expensive binary operations like Joins and Unions altogether for further gains. We have integrated RESIN into SPARKS QL and evaluated it on TPCDS, a standard analytics benchmark suite. Our results demonstrate that the proposed optimizations apply to 40% of the queries and speed up a large fraction of them by 1.1 - 6x, reducing the overall execution time of the benchmark suite by 12%.

the corpus callosum (CC) is the main neural pathway that communicates information between the brain's hemispheres. Impairment of this pathway is evident in neurogenetic and developmental disorders, neurodegenerative diseases, and in many major psychiatric disorders, making the CC the focus of intense study. Prior studies often require manual input for segmentation, or have been single site, single modality, or fail to report on the reliability and generalizability of segmentations. We develop a Robust Automatic Corpus Callosum analysis Toolkit (RACCAT) that segments the midsagittal CC from T1-weighted images, guided by diffusion MRI where available, to facilitate large-scale multimodal CC studies of its global, regional, and local (pointwise) structure. RACCAT was applied to data from 772 individuals aged 3-21 from the Pediatric Imaging, Neurocognition, and Genetics study, a developmental cohort imaged using multiple scanners and imaging protocols. CC area and fractional anisotropy were associated with age but also with site and scanner manufacturer;CC curvature also showed significant age associations but showed no detectable association with the scanning site, making it a robust developmental biomarker for multisite studies.

large crowds at music festivals or other mass events create challenging environments for traditional infrastructure based wireless networks. Mobile devices carried by the attendees produce large amounts of network traffic that can result in network outage or serious delays. Opportunistic networks may offer solutions to enable communication between attendees and/or organizers through direct communication between devices, without requiring a fixed infrastructure. In previous work, researchers have developed numerous opportunistic routing protocols designed to enable communication in such ad hoc networks. In this paper, several of these protocols are evaluated for the specific use case of a music festival by running simulations that make use of realistic mobility data collected during an international music festival. this analysis allows for identification of candidate routing protocols that exhibit properties that make them suitable for the envisaged scenario. the goal is to narrow down the set of candidate protocols and to eventually fine tune them to optimize their working. Based on the simulations, we propose two candidate routing protocols that are most suited for use at mass events. © 2013 IEEE.

Identification and characterization of cancer subtypes are important areas of research that are based on the integrated analysis of multiple heterogeneous genomics datasets. Since there are no tools supporting this process, much of this work is done using ad-hoc scripts and static plots, which is inefficient and limits visual exploration of the data. To address this, we have developed StratomeX, an integrative visualization tool that allows investigators to explore the relationships of candidate subtypes across multiple genomic data types such as gene expression, DNA methylation, or copy number data. StratomeX represents datasets as columns and subtypes as bricks in these columns. Ribbons between the columns connect bricks to show subtype relationships across datasets. Drill-down features enable detailed exploration. StratomeX provides insights into the functional and clinical implications of candidate subtypes by employing small multiples, which allow investigators to assess the effect of subtypes on molecular pathways or outcomes such as patient survival. As the configuration of viewing parameters in such a multi-dataset, multi-view scenario is complex, we propose a meta visualization and configuration interface for dataset dependencies and data-view relationships. StratomeX is developed in close collaboration with domain *** describe case studies that illustrate how investigators used the tool to explore subtypes in large datasets and demonstrate how they efficiently replicated findings from the literature and gained new insights into the data. © 2012 the Author(s).

In this paper we describe a visualization tool for representing the dynamics of graph algorithms. Toward this end, we designed a web-based framework which illustrates the dynamics as time-to-space mappings of dynamic graphs. Such static diagrams of dynamic data have the benefit of being able to display longer time spans in one view, hence supporting the observer with comparison tasks. the tool can show details about how an algorithm traverses a graph step-by-step in a static and animated fashion, for graph algorithm exploration as well as educational purposes. the animation together with the time-to-space mapping forms an overview-and-detail approach. By using flight carrier data from the U.S. Department of Transportation we show the usefulness of our interactive visualization for conveying graph algorithm dynamics. © 2021 ACM.

Purpose - the purpose of this paper is to promote practical methods for the numerical modelling of hard magnetic materials and soft ferromagnetic materials in an engineering context (design of electrical machines). Design/methodology/approach - Objectives achieved by the use of a practical, semi-empirical material model that needs modest material data and computer resources. Methods: a focused theoretical specification and algorithm development;use of actual material data for algorithm validation;incorporation in commercial engineering software as a test harness. Approach: a practical engineering scheme using a macroscopic material model based on readily available materials data Scope: numerical model of hard magnetic and soft ferromagnetic materials;scalar and vector hysteresis, major and minor loops. Findings - the limited practicality of much of the literature, especially vector hysteresis;successful use of the model in an existing non-linear numerical solver;energy conservation gives confidence in the results;the electric motor provides a good validation test case. Research limitations/implications - Possible future research: application to more complicated material properties such as magneto-relaxation. Practical implications - the paper extends the scope of computer-aided engineering design of electrical machines. the impact on the developer: increased sale of an engineering software product. the impact on the design engineer: more efficient designs, reduced prototyping, reduced technical risk. Originality/value - the algorithm that provides an effective material model;the focus on the practical issues of data and computational resources;the implementation of a theoretical construct in a large-scale engineering design program. the value is to designers of electrical machines.

this paper presents a combination of two new approaches to leakage determination. the first approach is based on the classic bottom-up leakage determination, but uses a sophisticated demand model, SIMDEUM R, to estimate night demand. the second approach is a new analysis method for flow patterns, the Comparison of Flow Pattern Distributions (CFPD). this method allows distinguishing so called consistent from so called inconsistent changes in flow patterns. the latter includes leakage, the former does not. In an application of the first method, simulated demand is compared to measured demand for four different supply areas/DMAs. these examples illustrate cases with and without leakage, and difficulties related to the night demand of a large volume customer. CFPD analysis is applied to data from two areas. these applications illustrate, respectively, the identification and pinpointing (in time) of a small leak and the independent quantification of concurrent different types of changes with opposite signs in a supply pattern. In each case, the power of the CFPD block analysis is illustrated: discriminative quantification and visualization result in features and trends in complicated time series becoming apparent at a glance.
