Exposure to environmental risk factors as well as weather conditions are known to have negative effects on health. Until recently, there was little a society could do for an individual at risk, other than provide general warnings when the concentration of pollutants or weather conditions deviate from the norm. Similarly, the assessment of individuals' exposure over time has been confined to population and geographic averages, rather than individualized estimates. Recent advances in sensors and mobile technology have enabled real-time measurements of environmental variables and, at the same time, provided information about the spatio-temporal behavior of individuals. this can dramatically change the way health and wellness are assessed as well as how care and treatment are delivered. this paper presents a system framework called "Smart and Connected Health Alert System (SCHAS)" for individual-level environmental exposure in an attempt to better understand the relationships among exposures, symptoms and human health conditions. We demonstrate user interface, data acquisition and visual evaluation tools for large mobile sensor data analysis.

Dictionary matching for regular expressions has gained recent interest because of a multitude of applications, including DNA sequence analysis, XML filtering, and network traffic analysis. In some applications, allowing wildcard and character class gaps in strings is enough, but usually the full expressive power of regular expressions is needed. In this paper we present and analyze a new algorithm for online dictionary matching for regular expressions. the unique feature of our algorithm is that it builds upon an algorithm for dictionary matching of string patterns with wildcard gaps, but is also capable of treating more complex regular expressions. In our experiments we used real data from expressions used for filtering spam e-mail. the size of the dictionary, that is, the number of different regular expressions to be matched varied from one to 3080. To find out how our algorithm scales to much larger numbers of patterns, we made small random changes to these patterns to produce up to 100000 patterns that are similar in style. We found out that the scalability of our algorithm is very good, being at its best for 10000-20000 patterns. Our algorithm outperforms the tested competitors for large dictionaries, GNU grep already for tens of patterns and Google's RE2 for hundreds of patterns.

Mobile multimedia streaming techniques: QoE and energy saving perspective

Multimedia streaming to mobile devices is challenging for two reasons. First, the way content is delivered to a client must ensure that the user does not experience a long initial playback delay or a distorted playback in the middle of a streaming session. Second, multimedia streaming applications are among the most energy hungry applications in smartphones. the energy consumption mostly depends on the delivery techniques and on the power management techniques of wireless access technologies (Wi-Fi, 3G, and 4G). In order to provide insights on what kind of streaming techniques exist, how they work on different mobile platforms, their efforts in providing smooth quality of experience, and their impact on energy consumption of mobile phones, we did a large set of active measurements with several smartphones having both Wi-Fi and cellular network access. Our analysis reveals five different techniques to deliver the content to the video players. the selection of a technique depends on the mobile platform, device, player, quality, and service. the results from our traffic and power measurements allow us to conclude that none of the identified techniques is optimal because they take none of the following facts into account: access technology used, user behavior, and user preferences concerning data waste. We point out the technique with the best playback buffer configuration, which provides the most attractive trade-offs in particular situations. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

With the advent of mobile era, mobile terminals are going through a trend of surpassing PC to become the most popular computing device. Meanwhile, the hackers and viruswriters are paying close attention to the mobile terminals, especially the Android platform. the growing of malwares on the Android system has drawn attentions from both the academia and security industry. Recently, mobile network traffic analysis has been used to identify the malware. But due to the lack of a large-scale malware repository and a systematic analysis of network traffic features, the existing research mostly remain in theory. In this paper, we design an Android malware traffic behavior monitoring scheme to capture traffic data generated by malware samples in a real Internet environment. We capture the network traffic from 5560 malware samples in the first 5 minutes, and analyze the major compositions of the traffic data. We discover that HTTP and DNS traffic are accounted for more than 99% on the application layer traffic. We then present an analysis of related network features: DNS query, HTTP packet length, ratio of downlink to uplink traffic amount, HTTP request and Ad traffic feature. Our statistical results illustrate that: (1) more than 70% malwares generate malicious traffic in the first 5 minutes;(2) DNS query and HTTP request can be used to identify the malware, and the detection rate reaches 69.55% and 40.89% respectively;(3) Ad traffic can greatly affect the malware detection. We believe our research provides an in-depth analysis into mobile malwares' network behaviors.

City-scale events, such as festivals, sport events, concerts gather thousands of people in different areas of a city. By installing large area Wi-Fi routers which record the presence of people using devices such as smartphones and tables, the density and the movements of the crowds can be estimated and classified. analysis of crowd data collected during such events leads to valuable insights and feedback both for the parties involved and for city planners and advertisers. In this paper we present a analysis and visualization system for improved understanding of density and movement information. We discuss real datasets constraints, data clean-up techniques and methods for estimating and classifying the crowd movements. these methods are implemented inside a framework that allows easy integration and analysis of mobility datasets. As proof of concept we present the analysis of a real dataset collected during a city-scale experiment in Arnhem, the Netherlands.

large-scale Internet scanning has become increasingly common in the research community shedding light on the state of security at a global level. However, scans in the past have typically focused on addressing on the adoption of services and the ubiquity of protocols, with few focusing on the extent of vulnerability and exposures on the Internet. this paper explores the shellshock vulnerability in web applications by analysing the Alexa Top 1 Million, public-facing websites in the world to ascertain the pervasiveness and severity of shellshock. We achieved this by developing an algorithm that uses simple heuristics with multi-threading capabilities empowering us to perform rapid large-scale web application scanning across various hosts over the HTTP protocol. the results of our global scan were interesting, and illustrated the pervasiveness of shellshock and the potential impact it can have on an organisation - despite this vulnerability being a known vulnerability at the time of our global scan. the results of which show that certain Web server configurations are particularly susceptible, and illustrates which popular top level domains and country's were most affected. Our findings also showed that while shellshock is easily detectable from an observational standpoint, there exists certain server configurations that allow the bug to be exploited even where cgi scripts are non-existent in the web server. We also discuss remediation guidelines and defensive security practices to protect hosts and organisations from such web-based attack vectors.

the built environment is a large contributor to the greenhouse gas emissions. the first step in tackling environmental impact and fuel cost reduction is the minimization of energy losses through introduction of new and more efficient energy conversion technologies. In this study, the potential application of fuel cell micro-CHP in a typical office building is investigated. A 1.5 kWel fuel cell micro-CHP has been installed in an office building at CIBSE headquarters (HQ). the unit converts natural gas to electricity, using Solid Oxide Fuel Cell (SOFC) stack. the installation and data from the operation of the system is discussed. the data shows that the heat recovered from the SOFC stack covers most of the domestic hot water requirement of the office building, requiring minimal top-up from the immersion heater. © the Electrochemical Society.

With the rapid increasing of spatial data resolution,the huge volume of datasets makes the geo-computation more time-consuming especially in operating some complex *** computing is regarded as an efficient solution by utilizing more computing *** stable and credible services play an irreplaceable role in parallel computing,especially when an error occurs in the large-scale science *** this paper,a master/slave approach of implementing the fast parallel recomputing is proposed based on redundancy *** some errors in application layer are detected,the original data block with computation errors is further partitioned into several sub-blocks which are recomputed by the surviving processes concurrently to improve the efficiency of failure *** multi-thread strategy in main process is adopted to distribute data block,detect errors and start recomputing procedure *** experimental results show that the proposed method can achieve better performance efficiency with fewer additional overhead.

Due to the limitations of detailed experimental data for large scale metabolic networks,structural analysis of these networks is a growing research topic in bioinformatics *** several available structure-oriented approaches,Petri nets has proved to be particular efficient tool,and thus is employed for studying *** metabolic network in this *** a brief introduction about the conceptual framework of Petri nets analysis,we give the first in silico Petri nets model of *** metabolic network,we also calculate,analyze and classify the p,t invariants in the model based on their structural capability and biological significance.
