Extracting data from pictures of medical records is a common task in the insurance industry as the patients often send their medical invoices taken by smartphone cameras. However, the overall process is still challenging to be fully automated because of low image quality and variation of templates that exist in the status quo. In this paper, we propose a mixed-initiative pipeline for extracting data from pictures of medical invoices, where deep-learning-based automatic prediction models and task-specific heuristics work together under the mediation of a user. In the user study with 12 participants, we confirmed our mixed-initiative approach can supplement the drawbacks of a fully automated approach within an acceptable completion time. We further discuss the findings, limitations, and future works for designing a mixed-initiative system to extract data from pictures of a complicated table.

Dimensionality reduction (DR) is a well-established approach for the visualization of high-dimensional data sets. While DR methods are often applied to typical DR benchmark data sets in the literature, they might suffer from high runtime complexity and memory requirements, making them unsuitable for large data visualization especially in environments outside of high-performance computing. To perform DR on large data sets, we propose the use of out-of-sample extensions. Such extensions allow inserting new data into existing projections, which we leverage to iteratively project data into a reference projection that consists only of a small manageable subset. this process makes it possible to perform DR out-of-core on large data, which would otherwise not be possible due to memory and runtime limitations. For metric multidimensional scaling (MDS), we contribute an implementation with out-of-sample projection capability since typical software libraries do not support it. We provide an evaluation of the projection quality of five common DR algorithms (MDS, PCA, t-SNE, UMAP, and autoencoders) using quality metrics from the literature and analyze the trade-off between the size of the reference set and projection quality. the run-time behavior of the algorithms is also quantified with respect to reference set size, out-of-sample batch size, and dimensionality of the data sets. Furthermore, we compare the out-of-sample approach to other recently introduced DR methods, such as PaCMAP and TriMAP, which claim to handle larger data sets than traditional approaches. To showcase the usefulness of DR on this large scale, we contribute a use case where we analyze ensembles of streamlines amounting to one billion projected instances.

the wide variety of visualization methods for numerical values have, up until now, outweighed the relatively modest selection available for nominal dimensions. theme Landscape is a visualization application designed for tagged data that typically contains a large number of nominal dimensions. It provides an overview of large data volumes, doing so by positioning objects in a landscape according to how similar their tags are. HexBoard technology has been used for dimension reduction. A further distinctive feature of theme Landscape concerns the icons. the tags that belong to an object can be identified according to the shape of its icon. Each keyword is assigned to its own unique glyph and these glyphs form, in any combination, a hexagonal icon. For the prototype a data archive of interactive media artworks has been used, which had been tagged using a taxonomy.

In numerical static analysis, the technique of widening thresholds is essential for improving the analysis precision, but blind uses of the technique often significantly slow down the analysis. Ideally, an analysis should apply the technique only when it benefits, by carefully choosing thresholds that contribute to the final precision. However, finding the proper widening thresholds is nontrivial and existing syntactic heuristics often produce suboptimal results. In this paper, we present a method that automatically learns a good strategy for choosing widening thresholds from a given codebase. A notable feature of our method is that a good strategy can be learned with analyzing each program in the codebase only once, which allows to use a large codebase as training data. We evaluated our technique with a static analyzer for full C and 100 open-source benchmarks. the experimental results show that the learned widening strategy is highly cost-effective;it achieves 84% of the full precision while increasing the baseline analysis cost only by 1.4x. Our learning algorithm is able to achieve this performance 26 times faster than the previous Bayesian optimization approach.

Vibration damping is a paramount factor in understanding vibrations in structures because the response of a structure under stationary dynamic loads, at resonance, is directly (inversely) proportional to the damping. Also, transient response of a structure decays exponentially at a rate determined by the damping factor and eigenfrequency of each mode. thus, to compute forced responses, the damping must be known. Despite damping thus being of large importance, there is limited knowledge of the damping of ships in general and of large container ships in particular. Some studies have suggested the damping is speed dependent, whereas others have not. In the last ISSC 2018 report, it was concluded that more data are needed from full-scale measurements. In the present paper the dynamics of a large container ship in operation is investigated, from full scale measurements in different operation conditions. State-of-the art, so-called operational modal analysis (OMA) is used for computing the eigenfrequencies, damping factors, and mode shapes of the ship. It is discussed how particularly the vibration damping varies with different operating parameters such as cargo, speed, and sea state. © 2021, Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

Principal different rotor failure modes require adapted design approaches for the design of composite containments. the Hagg/Shankey approach considers the brittle fracture of isotropic rotors and the subsequent impact of large fragments in containment rings. Other approaches are based on multi-fragmentation, which is typical for rotors made of composite materials. this failure mode assumes a composite dust rather than large fragments. the physical model is more complex and only first semi-empirical ideas have been formulated to describe the post-failure effects on the containment. the composite dust has the potential to cause a carbon dust explosion but rather often also results in a composite particle flow. this latter effect has already been observed in practical applications. Due to recent advances in experimental composite rotor failure assessment, this manifold burst behavior with axial shock waves not known for metallic rotors, could be proved principally. Two different theories to analyze these "dust" failure effects are theoretically analyzed concerning their physical plausibility. A comparison with experimental data is presented and the general assessment of these semi-empirical approaches is used to estimate containment loading limits.

Modern web services use in-memory caching extensively to increase throughput and reduce latency. there have been several workload analyses of production systems that have fueled research in improving the effectiveness of in-memory caching systems. However, the coverage is still sparse considering the wide spectrum of industrial cache use cases. In this work, we significantly further the understanding of real-world cache workloads by collecting production traces from 153 in-memory cache clusters at Twitter, sifting through over 80 TB of data, and sometimes interpreting the workloads in the context of the business logic behind them. We perform a comprehensive analysis to characterize cache workloads based on traffic pattern, time-to-live (TTL), popularity distribution, and size distribution. A fine-grained view of different workloads uncover the diversity of use cases: many are far more write-heavy or more skewed than previously shown and some display unique temporal patterns. We also observe that TTL is an important and sometimes defining parameter of cache working sets. Our simulations show that ideal replacement strategy in production caches can be surprising, for example, FIFO works the best for a large number of workloads.

Functional approximation as a high-order continuous representation provides a more accurate value and gradient query compared to the traditional discrete volume representation. Volume visualization directly rendered from functional approximation generates high-quality rendering results without high-order artifacts caused by trilinear interpolations. However, querying an encoded functional approximation is computationally expensive, especially when the input dataset is large, making functional approximation impractical for interactive visualization. In this paper, we proposed a novel functional approximation multi-resolution representation, Adaptive-FAM, which is lightweight and fast to query. We also design a GPU-accelerated out-of-core multi-resolution volume visualization framework that directly utilizes the Adaptive-FAM representation to generate high-quality rendering with interactive responsiveness. Our method can not only dramatically decrease the caching time, one of the main contributors to input latency, but also effectively improve the cache hit rate through prefetching. Our approach significantly outperforms the traditional function approximation method in terms of input latency while maintaining comparable rendering quality.

the haptic environment, due to the limited bandwidth of haptic sense, must be enhanced to aid comprehension. the enhancement procedures focused on here include techniques for pseudo-texturing in virtual environments. Generated texture models are automatically tunable according to the characteristics or properties of data to which it is applied. the proposed methods include stochastic, correlated, and harmonic models as well as several popular halftoning algorithms such as Amplitude Modulation (AM), Bayer's, and Error Diffusion. Presented analysis determines the parameter change required to yield the minimal perceivable change in texture for each texture level and proposed texturing method. We also consider edge and boundary enhancement. Finally, user evaluations are presented comparing the presented methods in a haptic visualization application.

In the analysis of spatially-referenced time-dependent data, gaining an understanding of the spatio-temporal distributions and relationships among the attributes in the data can be quite difficult. We present a visualization technique that addresses some of the challenges involved in visually exploring and analyzing the distributions of geo-spatial time-varying data. We have developed a pictorial representation that is based on the standard space-time cube metaphor and provides in a single display the overview and details of a large number of time-varying quantities. Our approach involves three-dimensional graphical widgets that intuitively represent profiles of the time-varying quantities and can be plotted on a geographic map to expose interesting spatio-temporal distributions of the data. We show how combining our visualization technique with standard data exploration features can assist in the exploration of salient patterns in a data set. the visualization approach described here supports expeditious exploration of multiple data sets; this in turn assists the process of building initial hypotheses about the attributes in a data set and enhances the user's ability to pose and explore interesting questions about the data.
