large crowds at music festivals or other mass events create challenging environments for traditional infrastructure based wireless networks. Mobile devices carried by the attendees produce large amounts of network traffic that can result in network outage or serious delays. Opportunistic networks may offer solutions to enable communication between attendees and/or organizers through direct communication between devices, without requiring a fixed infrastructure. In previous work, researchers have developed numerous opportunistic routing protocols designed to enable communication in such ad hoc networks. In this paper, several of these protocols are evaluated for the specific use case of a music festival by running simulations that make use of realistic mobility data collected during an international music festival. this analysis allows for identification of candidate routing protocols that exhibit properties that make them suitable for the envisaged scenario. the goal is to narrow down the set of candidate protocols and to eventually fine tune them to optimize their working. Based on the simulations, we propose two candidate routing protocols that are most suited for use at mass events.

Information overload has become a notable problem in many multidisciplinary design optimization analyses. When dealing with large design datasets, engineering designers can quickly become overwhelmed by the data, solutions, and their relationship. this paper presents a work-centered visual analytics framework to address such challenges. the proposed framework integrates user-centered interactive visualization and data-oriented computational algorithms into two analytical loops to help designers perform in-depth analysis on a trade space. An application system prototype, LIVE, has been developed to support multidisciplinary design optimization. the proposed system allows designers to analyze data, discover patterns, and formalize preferences in a uniform and integrated software platform by combining visualization and data mining. this approach is expected to help designers efficiently making sense of complicated multi-dimensional design data sets.

Since many components comprising large scale cloud datacenters have a great number of configuration parameters (e.g. hostnames, languages, and time zones), it is difficult to keep consistencies in the configuration parameters. In such cases, misconfigured parameters can cause service failures. For this reason, we propose a misconfiguration detection method for large-scale cloud datacenters, which can automatically determine possible misconfigurations by identifying the relations existing among majority of the parameters using statistical decision tree analysis. We have also developed a pattern modification method to improve the accuracy of the decision tree approach. We evaluated the misconfiguration detection performance of the proposed method by using both artificial data and actual data. the results show that we can achieve higher accuracy (78.6% in the actual data) in misconfiguration detection by using the pattern modification. © 2012 IEEE.

Usefulness of graphically visualizing and manipulating large data sets in oil and gas exploration and production is as important as ever. this paper describes the development and parallelization of a multi-phase 3D oil-water reservoir visualization tool on the IBM Cell computer and CUDA enabled GPU. An independent Oil reservoir simulator described in [1] was used to generate the pressure and oil / water saturation values over a certain period of time. the oil reservoir visualization tool displays data grids in a 3D environment and allows the user to interact with it. Due to large speed requirements, our aim is to parallelize the computations required to interact with and visualize the grid, mainly transformation [2], zooming, camera movement [3] and compute intensive lighting model [4][5]. this tool also allows the user to playback the simulation results over a time duration and fetches data values upon mouse click at a particular grid point on a particular day. the development environments are nVIDIA CUDA and IBM Cell SDK 3.0 along with QT and OpenGL libraries. Various experiments were run on an x86 computer with nVIDIA Quadro FX 5800 GPU, and on an IBM Cell BE computer with 1 QS20 Cell blade containing two 9-core Cell processor packages. Our results indicate that the nVIDIA GPU provides on average, speed up of 67x over serial implementation and IBM Cell BE with 16 SPE SIMD implementation 32x over the serial implementation.

In many application areas, analysts have to make sense of large volumes of multivariate time-series data. Explorative analysis of this kind of data is often difficult and overwhelming at the level of raw data. Temporal data abstraction reduces data complexity by deriving qualitative statements that reflect domain-specific key characteristics. Visual representations of abstractions and raw data together with appropriate interaction methods can support analysts in making their data easier to understand. Such a visualization technique that applies smooth semantic zooming has been developed in the context of patient data analysis. However, no empirical evidence on its effectiveness and efficiency is available. In this paper, we aim to fill this gap by reporting on a controlled experiment that compares this technique with another visualization method used in the well-known KNAVE-II framework. Both methods integrate quantitative data with qualitative abstractions whereas the first one uses a composite representation with color-coding to display the qualitative data and spatial position coding for the quantitative data. the second technique uses juxtaposed representations for quantitative and qualitative data with spatial position coding for both. Results show that the test persons using the composite representation were generally faster, particularly for more complex tasks that involve quantitative values as well as qualitative abstractions. © 2012 the Author(s).

Among one of the current and most topical tasks in the area of textual documents processing belongs the problem of automatic categorization. Clustering as the most common form of unsupervised learning enables automatic grouping of unlabeled documents into subsets called clusters. In this paper, the authors are concerned with results of clustering of very large electronic real-world data collections containing customers' reviews written freely, in English as a natural language. the reviews are automatically clustered into two groups that should contain either positive or negative reviews. the paper focuses on the analysis why certain reviews are assigned wrongly to a group containing mostly reviews of a different class. the assignment of a review into a certain cluster is based on its properties, i.e., on the words that appeared in the review. thus, words appearing in incorrectly categorized reviews were analyzed. It was found that words that are important from the correct classification viewpoint (and thus bearing some sentiment) are often similarly important as the words in a different set than expected, therefore do not take effect as misleading information unlike words that are much more or quite insignificant.

We present a general visual analytics architecture that is designed and implemented to effectively analyze unstructured social media data on a large scale. Pipelined on a high-performance cluster configuration, MPI processing, and interactive visual analytics interfaces, our architecture, I-SI, closely integrates data-driven analytical methods and user-centered visual analytics. It creates a coherent analysis environment for identifying event structures, geographical distributions, and key indicators of emerging events. this environment supports monitoring, analyzing, and responding to latent information extracted from social media. We have applied the I-SI architecture to collect social media data, analyze the data on a large scale and uncover the latent social phenomena. To demonstrate the efficacy and applicability of I-SI, we describe several social media use cases in multiple domains that were evaluated by experts. the use cases demonstrate that I-SI can benefit a range of users by constructing meaningful event structures and identifying precursors to critical events within a rich, evolving set of topics. © 2012 the Author(s).

Identification and characterization of cancer subtypes are important areas of research that are based on the integrated analysis of multiple heterogeneous genomics datasets. Since there are no tools supporting this process, much of this work is done using ad-hoc scripts and static plots, which is inefficient and limits visual exploration of the data. To address this, we have developed StratomeX, an integrative visualization tool that allows investigators to explore the relationships of candidate subtypes across multiple genomic data types such as gene expression, DNA methylation, or copy number data. StratomeX represents datasets as columns and subtypes as bricks in these columns. Ribbons between the columns connect bricks to show subtype relationships across datasets. Drill-down features enable detailed exploration. StratomeX provides insights into the functional and clinical implications of candidate subtypes by employing small multiples, which allow investigators to assess the effect of subtypes on molecular pathways or outcomes such as patient survival. As the configuration of viewing parameters in such a multi-dataset, multi-view scenario is complex, we propose a meta visualization and configuration interface for dataset dependencies and data-view relationships. StratomeX is developed in close collaboration with domain *** describe case studies that illustrate how investigators used the tool to explore subtypes in large datasets and demonstrate how they efficiently replicated findings from the literature and gained new insights into the data. © 2012 the Author(s).

this paper presents a combination of two new approaches to leakage determination. the first approach is based on the classic bottom-up leakage determination, but uses a sophisticated demand model, SIMDEUM R, to estimate night demand. the second approach is a new analysis method for flow patterns, the Comparison of Flow Pattern Distributions (CFPD). this method allows distinguishing so called consistent from so called inconsistent changes in flow patterns. the latter includes leakage, the former does not. In an application of the first method, simulated demand is compared to measured demand for four different supply areas/DMAs. these examples illustrate cases with and without leakage, and difficulties related to the night demand of a large volume customer. CFPD analysis is applied to data from two areas. these applications illustrate, respectively, the identification and pinpointing (in time) of a small leak and the independent quantification of concurrent different types of changes with opposite signs in a supply pattern. In each case, the power of the CFPD block analysis is illustrated: discriminative quantification and visualization result in features and trends in complicated time series becoming apparent at a glance.
