Information dissemination is a fundamental and frequently occurring problem in large, dynamic, distributed systems. We propose a novel approach to this problem, interest-aware information dissemination, that takes advantage of small-world usage patterns in data-sharing communities. these small-world characteristics suggest that users naturally form groups of common interest. We propose algorithms for identifying these groups dynamically, without a need for explicit classification of topics or declaration of user interests. these algorithms use information about the data consumed by users to identify, via online computation, groups with similar interests. As a proof of concept, we apply this methodology to the problem of locating files in large user communities. Using real-world traces from a scientific community and from a peer-to-peer system, we show that proactive information dissemination within groups of common interest can reduce the search load by up to 70%. In addition, this approach naturally supports the efficient discovery of collections of files, a requirement specific to scientific data analysis tasks. We hypothesize that our algorithms can find numerous other uses in distributed systems, such as reputation management.

Recently design for manufacturability (DFM) has been required to achieve higher process yield. Information obtained from silicon by testing and/or fault analysis is sometimes fed back for redesign of VLSI circuits. In this paper we propose a method to maximize defect coverage of a test set initially generated for stuck-at faults in a full scan sequential circuit by using feed back information from fault analysis. If a test set for more complex faults than stuck-at faults is generated, higher defect coverage would be obtained. Such a test set, however, would have a large number of test vectors, and hence the test costs would go up. the proposed method improves defect coverage of the test set by not adding new test vectors but modifying test vectors with the information obtained from fault analysis. therefore there are no negative impacts on test data volume and test application time. the initial fault coverage for stuck-at faults of the test set is guaranteed with modified test vectors. In this paper we focus on detecting as many as possible non-feedback AND/OR-type bridging faults. Experimental results show that the proposed method significantly decreases the number of non-feedback AND/OR-type bridging faults undetected by a test set generated for stuck-at faults

this paper introduces a new concept of hierarchical testability called Single-Port-Change (SPC) two-pattern testability. We propose a non-scan design-for-testability (DFT) method which makes each path that needs to be tested in a data path SPC two-pattern testable. An SPC two-pattern test guarantees robust (resp. non-robust) test if the path is robust (resp. non-robust) testable. Since it is easy to find justification paths for SPC two-pattern tests at register-transfer level, the proposed DFT method can reduce hardware overhead compared to that of our previous DFT method for arbitrary two-pattern tests. Furthermore, we propose a method to reduce test generation effort by removing a subset of sequentially untestable paths from targets of test generation. Experimental results show that the proposed method can reduce hardware overhead without losing the quality of test.

PHENIX is one of two large experiments at Brookhaven National Laboratory's Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). the PHENIX experiment had a very successful Run 4 in early 2004. Compared to previous runs, we were able to almost quadruple the data rate and to collect more than 200TB of data for the Au-Au system. In addition, we now have a mature and reliable online monitoring system in place which allows to ensure a high quality of the data. We made significant progress toward the goal to determine all informations required for the subsequent reconstruction and analysis of the data, such as calibration constants, in a near-line fashion, which greatly expedites the offline analysis of the data. We will give a brief overview of the system, and cover the areas where we achieved significant improvements over the previous runs. © 2004 IEEE.

the impact pressure due to sloshing motion in the liquid cargo hold is one of the most important load factors when designing new liquid cargo hold and containment system for membrane-type LNG carriers. the magnitude, effective area and duration of the impact load are all important when considering structural response of the containment system. the strength of the containment system is also dependent on the spatial and temporal pattern of the impact load. this paper describes a numerical and experimental scheme to evaluate full-scale sloshing load and impact strength of the containment system. the scheme consists of seakeeping/sloshing analysis to identify the critical wave condition for the sloshing model test, sloshing model test to measure the sloshing impact load on rigid tank wall, evaluation of full-scale impact load by the 'composite' scale law and a hydro-viscoelastic-fracture analysis of containment system with consideration of fluid-structure interaction during the vibratory motion of the containment system. the newly introduced composite scale law revealed that the existing ad-hoc scale law is still applicable to the existing operational condition at high filling level but not applicable to the partial filling conditions. Fluid-structure interaction between LNG and containment system is considered during the dynamic structural analysis of containment system with the LNG modeled as an acoustic medium. the containment system in LNG tank, which is a composite structure of metal membrane, polyurethane foam, plywood laminate insulator and steel hull, is modeled as a two-dimensional composite structure. All of the structural elements are treated as linear elastic material except polymer and plywood insulators that show viscoelastic behavior at high loading rate, which is the case in the sloshing impact load. the attenuation due to the fluid-structure interaction, material damping and the effect of locality and duration of the impact load on the structure respons

A large set of patients with Parkinson's Disease (PD), and normal healthy control subjects, were studied using the dopamine transporter tracer [ 99mTc]TRODAT-1 and single photon emission tomography (SPECT). the sample used in this study was comprised of 81 PD patients (mean age ± SD, 63.4 ± 10.4 y;age range, 39.0-84.2 y), and 94 healthy controls (mean age ± SD, 61.8 ± 11.0 y;age range, 40.9-83.3 y). A standardized template containing six regions-of-interest (ROIs) was transposed onto subrogions of the right and left basal ganglia. In addition, all images were coregistered to a standard [99mTc]TRODAT-1 template. the three slices corresponding to the striatum were extracted and summed into a single transverse slice. these single-slice images were used in a human observer study, using four experienced investigators. Each observer was asked to rate their confidence that each randomly selected image had the appearance of a healthy control subject, or a patient with PD. the data from the observer study was analyzed using a Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) analysis. the area under the ROC curve (AUC) indicated the accuracy with which each observer identified each subject. In a similar manner, the ROI data was also analyzed using a ROC curve. the observer analysis gave a more accurate diagnosis (AUC = 0.93 ± 0.02) than the ROI technique (AUC = 0.90 ± 0.02). this suggests that the human observers are visually acquiring more information from the images than is contained in the quantitative striatal uptake alone. Indeed, it is likely that the pattern of uptake of the tracer is of more significance than the absolute uptake, which has implications for the analysis of radionuclide images using quantitative techniques. © 2004 IEEE.

ALICE (A large Ion Collider Experiment) is the heavy-ion dedicated experiment at LHC. the Resistive Plate Chamber detector (RPC) with low-resistivity bakelite electrodes was selected for the trigger system of the muon spectrometer. Although the main goal of ALICE is the study of nucleus-nucleus collisions, reference data in p-p interactions will be collected as well. If, on one hand, RPC operation in streamer mode is adequate for data taking with ion beams, on the other hand, the more severe ageing requirements for p-p data taking lead us to explore the possibility of operating the detector in "highly-saturated avalanche" regime. A detailed study of the signal was carried out with cosmic rays to get a more precise view of the intrinsic properties of the gas mixture (among others the streamer fraction vs. HV). the possibility of detecting avalanche signals with our FEE designed for the streamer mode was successfully investigated. Furthermore, tests with muon beam at CERN were carried out with satisfactory results in terms of efficiency, time resolution and cluster size. An analysis of the exhaust gas showed a low H F content: this is an encouraging result in view of long term stability of the detector which is at present under test. © 2004 IEEE.

this paper presents a method and concepts of a supporting tool for really rapid prototyping of large-scale business information systems. Our method is based on the following guidelines: (1) small team of highly skilled members with combined skills, (2) prototype-based development of subsystems and the system as a whole, (3) brainstorming sessions always involving system analysts, database and application designers, and user representatives (if needed), and (4) development tools providing for efficient prototype development by maximum automation of all design phases. the also presented development tool is based on standardization of functional and visual characteristics of an application, a library of high-level, coarse-grained components, and a set of rules for model-to-application mapping enabling automatic application reconfiguration in case of changes in the data model.

A spatial multiplexing technique for distributed antenna systems is proposed, where the mobile co-located with multiple antennas is capable of receiving distinct sub-streams from multiple widely separated antennas. Modulation and power are adapted based on the knowledge of large-scale fading, which varies much slower than instantaneous channel state information. three modulation and power adaptation criteria are presented, which minimize the error probability, minimize the power consumption and maximize data throughput, respectively. Simulations based on minimum error probability criterion illustrate the performance improvement compared with original V-BLAST. Based on minimum power consumption criterion and maximum data throughput criterion, numerical results also indicate that DAS is more power efficient, spectral efficient and uniform in quality of service than co-located antenna systems (CAS), which validates the previous theoretic analysis results.

the recent and increasing popularity of wireless transmission systems has initiated a strong interest in research on mobile communications. While most of this research effort focuses on unicast communications, there has also been a number of proposals to support multicasting with mobile members. However, the majority of these proposals, despite being innovative and elegant, remain at a research level, i.e. it is not clear if they could realistically be deployed in real large networks. In contrast, the IETF Mobile IP working group has outlined two realistic methods that allow mobile nodes to join multicast groups. these proposals have however never been evaluated and compared. this paper therefore presents the results of a large number of simulations in which we have compared the efficiency of the two IETF solutions. We also propose the use of a new extension of the Multicast Listener Delivery (MLD) protocol, which allows to rapidly resume the delivery of multicast data to a mobile receiver that has just performed a handover. the efficiency of this proposal is also compared with the already mentioned solutions of the IETF.
