Intelligent classification methods of grain kernels using computer vision analysis

In this paper, a digital image analysis method was developed to classify seven kinds of individual grain kernels (common rice, glutinous rice, rough rice, brown rice, buckwheat, common barley and glutinous barley) widely planted in Korea. A total of 2800 color images of individual grain kernels were acquired as a data set. Seven color and ten morphological features were extracted and processed by linear discriminant analysis to improve the efficiency of the identification process. the output features from linear discriminant analysis were used as input to the four-layer back-propagation network to classify different grain kernel varieties. the data set was divided into three groups: 70% for training, 20% for validation, and 10% for testing the network. the classification experimental results show that the proposed method is able to classify the grain kernel varieties efficiently.

ALICE (A large Ion Collider Experiment) is the heavy-ion dedicated experiment at LHC. the Resistive Plate Chamber detector (RPC) with low-resistivity bakelite electrodes was selected for the trigger system of the muon spectrometer. Although the main goal of ALICE is the study of nucleus-nucleus collisions, reference data in p-p interactions will be collected as well. If, on one hand, RPC operation in streamer mode is adequate for data taking with ion beams, on the other hand, the more severe ageing requirements for p-p data taking lead us to explore the possibility of operating the detector in "highly-saturated avalanche" regime. A detailed study of the signal was carried out with cosmic rays to get a more precise view of the intrinsic properties of the gas mixture (among others the streamer fraction vs. HV). the possibility of detecting avalanche signals with our FEE designed for the streamer mode was successfully investigated. Furthermore, tests with muon beam at CERN were carried out with satisfactory results in terms of efficiency, time resolution and cluster size. An analysis of the exhaust gas showed a low H F content: this is an encouraging result in view of long term stability of the detector which is at present under test. © 2004 IEEE.

Efficient selection of unique and popular oligos for large EST databases

EST databases have grown exponentially in recent years and now represent the largest collection of genetic sequences. An important application of these databases is that they contain information useful for the design of gene-specific oligonucleotides (or simply, oligos) that can be used in PCR primer design, microarray experiments, and genomic library screening. In this paper, we study two complementary problems concerning the selection of short oligos, e.g., 20–50 bases, from a large database of tens of thousands of EST sequences: (i) selection of oligos each of which appears (exactly) in one EST sequence but does not appear (exactly or approximately) in any other EST sequence and (ii) selection of oligos that appear (exactly or approximately) in many ESTs. the first problem is called the unique oligo problem and has applications in PCR primer and microarray probe designs. the second is called the popular oligo problem and is useful in screening genomic libraries (such as BAC libraries) for gene-rich regions. We present an efficient algorithm to identify all unique oligos in the ESTs and an efficient heuristic algorithm to enumerate the most popular oligos. By taking into account the distribution of the frequencies of the words in the EST database, the algorithms have been carefully engineered to achieve remarkable running times on regular PCs. Each of the algorithms takes only a couple of hours (on a 1.2 GHz CPU, 1 GB RAM machine) to run on a dataset 28 Mbases of barley ESTs from the HarvEST *** present simulation results on synthetic data and a preliminary analysis of the barley EST database. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2003.

Insights from hydronic heating systems in 259 commercial buildings

this paper analyzes hydronic heating systems in 259 buildings across 56 US organizations. the dataset comprises 120,000,000 measurements taken by building automation systems from 2014 to 2024 and for a typical building contains measured supply and return water temperature, flow rate, output power, system state and outdoor temperature spanning 2.2 years (15-minute interval). Pump and boiler data are available for smaller subsets of buildings. analysis shows that many assumptions about these systems do not align with real-world performance. Systems operate far more frequently than expected - 81% of hours annually for the median building. Loads are lower and more skewed than expected, and oversizing is common even accounting for redundancy requirements. Load distributions indicate that relatively small equipment could serve a surprisingly large percentage of annual loads. Notably, equipment sized to 30% of the maximum measured load could serve up 84% of the total heating energy consumption for the median building. analysis of key parameters, such as supply water temperature, show that functional resets are rare and that manual overrides are common, often persisting for months or years. Return water temperatures and other data show that boilers operate less efficiently than expected. these findings offer valuable insights for operators, designers, owners, and policymakers, highlighting that substantial energy savings opportunities are commonplace and can be captured by modifying design and operation based on how these systems actually operate. the paper includes the code used for analysis and visualization as well as an open-source dataset of 216 buildings.

the recent and increasing popularity of wireless transmission systems has initiated a strong interest in research on mobile communications. While most of this research effort focuses on unicast communications, there has also been a number of proposals to support multicasting with mobile members. However, the majority of these proposals, despite being innovative and elegant, remain at a research level, i.e. it is not clear if they could realistically be deployed in real large networks. In contrast, the IETF mobile IP working group has outlined two realistic methods that allow mobile nodes to join multicast groups. these proposals have however never been evaluated and compared. this paper therefore presents the results of a large number of simulations in which we have compared the efficiency of the two IETF solutions. We also propose the use of a new extension of the multicast listener delivery (MLD) protocol, which allows to rapidly resume the delivery of multicast data to a mobile receiver that has just performed a handover. the efficiency of this proposal is also compared with the already mentioned solutions of the IETF.

Under the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, traditional classroom teaching has been obstructed, making online learning the primary choice for education. Students' adaptability to online learning environments significantly affects their learning outcomes and overall quality of education. this study aims to identify the key factors affecting students' adaptability to online learning. We first preprocess the data by creating dummy variables to make the data suitable for subsequent statistical analysis. Secondly, a quartile relation matrix is used to visualize the Pearson relation coefficients between various variables. then, the R package IsingFit is employed for model fitting, and a psychometric network model is used to visualize the network relationships, resulting in an undirected relation graph. the experimental results indicate that family economic status, home address, online learning equipment, and the usability of the school's student management system are key factors affecting student adaptability. the results highlight the necessity of improving home learning conditions, providing technical support, and optimizing school management to enhance the online learning experience for students.

Real-time Location Systems (RTLS) are important technology utilized to provide spatial and temporal location information to Industry 4.0 systems. We discuss in more details ultra-wide band radio frequency identification systems (WB RFID). We proposed utilization of visualization and data analytics techniques to quantify and examine latencies and availability and demonstrated their potential usages in a large scale environment. the proposed methodology could easily be extended to other RTLS systems with similar configuration.

this paper addresses the problem of designing scalable concurrent priority queues for large scale multiprocessors machines with up to several hundred processors. Priority queues are fundamental in the design of modern multiprocessor algorithms, with many classical applications ranging from numerical algorithms through discrete event simulation and expert systems. While highly scalable approaches have been introduced for the special case of queues with a fixed set of priorities, the most efficient designs for the general case are based on the parallelization of the heap data structure. though numerous intricate heap-based schemes have been suggested in the literature, their scalability seems to be limited to small machines in the range of ten to twenty processors. this paper proposes an alternative approach: to base the design of concurrent priority queues on the probabilistic skiplist data structure, rather than on a heap. To this end, we show that a concurrent skiplist structure, following a simple set of modifications, provides a concurrent priority queue with a higher level of parallelism and significantly less contention than the fastest known heap-based algorithms. Our initial empirical evidence, collected on a simulated 256 node shared memory multiprocessor architecture similar to the MIT Alewife, suggests that the new skiplist based priority queue algorithm scales significantly better than heap based schemes throughout most of the concurrency range. With 256 processors, they are about twice as fast in performing deletions and up to 8 times faster in performing insertions.

large-scale autoregressive text-to-speech (TTS) models can generate speech that is nearly indistinguishable from human speech. However, training large language models (LLMs) is challenging due to memory and computational constraints. this paper describes our TTS method for the 2024 Conversational Voice Clone Challenge (CoVoC). Our approach modifies the LauraGPT model to synthesize mixed Chinese and English text by expanding the Chinese pinyin vocabulary and reducing the number of layers in the decoder-only Transformer architecture. Despite using minimal training data, the performance gap between our method and other constrained systems is relatively small in both subjective and some objective evaluations. this paper discusses our attempt to train lightweight LLMs for zero-shot TTS and analyzes the factors contributing to low performance. Geographic Information System (GIS) is the basic data management and visualization platform for transmission and distribution power network planning, operation scheduling and repair decision support systems. GIS systems based on SQL database can't meet the real-time requirements of massive data processing and large-scale concurrent topology analysis of distribution networks. An object-oriented in-memory database is introduced, which uses partitioning and paging storage technology for efficient caching and retrieval of large-scale grid topology models. Parallel processing techniques based on data partitions and task scheduling queues are developed, which enables the parallel executions of multi-user requests of topology tracing(reading) and switch open-close operations(writing). Further, for the conflicting write requests across partitions, a parent-child task queue is introduced. In the stress test of the on-line system of a provincial company with more than 10 million power grid equipment, response time less than 0.2 seconds is observed, under the load of more than 400 topology analysis requests per second per server.
