Executing analytics functionalities over data from highly distributed data sources and data streams is at the very core of the vast majority of Industrial Internet of things (IIoT) applications. State of the art streaming engines provide the means for high performance analytics over high velocity IIoT streams, yet they still need significant programming and customization efforts when deployed in heterogeneous industrial environments. this paper introduces a configurable engine for distributed data analytics for IIoT applications. the engine leverages the performance of state of the art data streaming middleware platforms, which it augments with a set of digital models for configuring DDA operations. As such the introduced engine reduces the effort needed to implement and deploy distributed data analytics in IIoT environments. the engine is available as open source software and has been validated in a various real-life IIoT applications in different environments.

In this work, we propose Traffic Data Enrichment sensor (TraDES), towards a low-cost traffic sensor for Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) based on heterogeneous data fusion. TraDES aims at fusing data from vehicular traces with road traffic data to enrich current spatiotemporal traffic data. In that direction, we propose a robust methodology to group spatially and temporally these different data sources, producing a vehicular trace with its respective traffic conditions, which is given as input to a learning-based model based on Artificial Neural Networks (ANN). Hence, TraDES is an enriched traffic sensor that is able to sense (detect) traffic conditions using a scalable and low-cost approach and to increase the spatiotemporal traffic data coverage.

Long range wide area networks (LoRaWAN) technology provides a simple solution to enable low-cost services for low power internet-of-things (IoT) networks in various applications. the current evaluation of LoRaWAN networks relies on simulations or early testing, which are typically time-consuming and prevent effective exploration of the design space. this paper proposes an analytical model to calculate the delay and energy consumed for reliable Uplink (UL) data delivery in Class A LoRaWAN. the analytical model is evaluated using a real network test-bed as well as simulation experiments based on the ns-3 LoRaWAN module. the resulting comparison confirms that the model accurately estimates the delay and energy consumed in the considered environment. the value of the model is demonstrated via its application to evaluate the impact of the number of end-devices and the maximum number of data frame retransmissions on delay and energy consumed for the confirmed UL data delivery in LoRaWAN networks. the model can be used to optimize different transmission parameters in future LoRaWAN networks.

A number of sensor network applications are envisioned to be applied to industry settings where the existence of mobile nodes (MN) is required. In critical applications, the real-time monitoring of a MN must always be available, something that requires the existence of a suitable mobility protocol to control the handoff procedure. In this paper, we use an industrial WSN setting to perform a comprehensive performance evaluation of different mobility handling solutions based on single- and multiple-metric options. the results show that Fuzzy Logic-based Mobility Controller (FLMC), the multiple-metric approach we used (based on Fuzzy Logic), performs better compared to any single metric-based approach under a varying set of conditions. More specifically, we demonstrate that the Fuzzy Logic -based approach can efficiently control the handoff triggering procedure and provide high reliability (low packet loss) under different mobility models, different radio propagation models, and different topologies.

In this work we analyze the security requirements and challenges of e-Health Internet of things (IoT) applications and propose a complete architecture to address them. this architecture combines VICINITY IoT Framework security features together with General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) compliant mechanisms in order to provide secure e-Health services to elders and middle-aged people. We also demonstrate how an Ambient Assisted Living (AAL) and an mHealth application were designed and implemented, addressing the current security and privacy requirements.

Smart Farming is a development that emphasizes on the use of modern technologies in the cyber-physical field management cycle. Technologies such as the Internet of things (IoT) and Cloud computing have accelerated the digital transformation of the conventional agricultural practices promising increased production rate and product quality. the adoption of smart farming though is hampered because of the lack of models providing guidance to practitioners regarding the necessary components that constitute IoT based monitoring systems. To guide the process of designing and implementing Smart farming monitoring systems, in this paper we propose a generic reference architecture model, taking also into consideration a very important non-functional requirement, the energy consumption restriction. Moreover, we present and discuss the technologies that incorporate the four layers of the architecture model that are the sensor Layer, the Network Layer, the Service Layer and the Application Layer. A discussion is also conducted upon the challenges that smart farming monitoring systems face.

Monitoring ambient air temperature is one of the important operations to ensure resilience and efficiency in large-scale data centers. However, deployment of a data center monitoring system requires recording the location of thousands of sensors which is a labor-intensive task if is done manually. Since Radio-Frequency (RF) based localization solutions in literature are inadequate in the multipath rich environment of data centers, we investigated the possibility of utilizing the measurements of the sensors in localizing themselves. the idea of thermal piloting is to correlate sensor measurements with the expected temperature values at their locations. It can be treated as a classification problem, in which the feature vector is formed by the temperature values at each sensor location across different cooling configurations. the training set is provided by Computational Fluid Dynamic (CFD) simulations. Since classical supervised learning techniques fail to account for the bijective relation between sensor indices and locations, we formulated an extra step based on the Maximum Weighted Bi-partite Matching (MWBM) problem. Experimental results show that the proposed methods can achieve an average localization error of 0.64 meters.

Smart Farming has the goal to support farmers in their various activities, i.e., achieve best results in quality and quantity of their products, with low and efficient resource usage, working in sustainable manners etc. For that, a lot of information is needed, e.g., about the current state of the monitored agricultural area. Typically this requires a large number of sensors which collect important sensor data at predefined intervals. For further evaluation such data is usually processed in a central place, for which it must first be transferred from the field to a data sink at the farm premises. Cellular networks could be used for such data transmissions, but the network deployment in rural areas is costly with less likely revenues. thus, mobile operators are not eager to roll out their networks in rural areas so that they are often not well covered. In this paper we introduce PotatoScanner, a mobile Delay Tolerant Wireless sensor Node (DTWSN) that closes this gap and acts with the help of a field sprayer as a data mule for the collected data. In addition, PotatoScanner itself has sensors to obtain further information about the cultivated field. the paper provides an overview of the overall system and analyses the measurement data obtained in real operation over the past two years 2017 and 2018.

We present a trajectory-based routing (TBR) protocol, which efficiently routes data to a mobile sink on the shortest path in Wireless sensor Networks (WSNs). Using the idea of vector images (sensors representing pixels), we use two kinds of geometric shapes, hyperbola and arc as the smallest elements within the shortest routing path. Our protocol let sink nodes transmit the compressed routing request to source nodes through a routing path. Each individual node uses the DV-Hop (Distance Vector Hop) of the virtual anchor nodes as the dictionary which helps in efficiently decipher a compressed routing request. Finally, the routing path is distributed to each individual node within the path. the mobile sink can integrate updated routing path to the existing active path by sending new requests. Our protocol relaxes the constraints such as use of nodes' GPS information, the reliability of nodes, and also, places no restrictions on the sink's moving speed and direction. Using a WSN test-bed, and simulations on TOSSIM, we show that our trajectory-based routing protocol using DV-Hop is faster, reliable against node failures, provide location anonymity of nodes, and transmits less routing packets than two other known approaches.

Internet of things (IoT) has become the backbone of current and future emerging applications both in the public and the private, industrial sector. the IoT paradigm, enhanced with intelligence and big data analytics, has found applications in a wide range of solutions such as smart home, smart city, industrial IoT etc. Even though IoT implies that cheap motes can conduct a specific task, thus a large number of them can be deployed, we aim to minimize the installed hardware while we still have a high level of quality of service. Machine Learning algorithms can support this challenge by generating virtual data via utilization of real data from a smaller subset of sensors. the generated data can replicate sensor behavior which would otherwise be difficult or impossible to track. It is also possible to use simulation models for data analysis model validation, by generating new data under varying conditions. In this paper, we propose a concept of an IoT testbed which allows virtual IoT resources to be immersed and tested in real life conditions, which are met in everyday life. Additionally, the features of the implemented testbed prototype are discussed while taking into account specific use cases, regarding luminosity scenarios in industrial environments.
