By leveraging Semantic web technologies, Linked Open Data provides an extensive amount of structured information in a wide variety of domains. Principles of Liked Data facilitate access and re-use of semantic information, both for human and machine consumption. However, information overload due to the availability of a large amount of semantic data, as well as the need for automatic interpretation and analysis of the web of Data require systematic approaches to manage the quality of the published information. Identifying the value of information provided by Linked Data enables a general understanding about the significance of semantic resources. this can lead to better information filtering functionalities in Semantic web-based applications. the aim of this paper is to propose a novel approach, derived from information theory, to measure the informativeness in the context of the web of Data. We experiment with the metric and present its applications in a variety of areas, including Linked Data quality analysis, faceted browsing, and ranking. © 2013 Springer-Verlag.

web service composition is a promising area to revolutionize the collaboration among heterogeneous applications. Trust is recognized as an important topic in this research area. In this paper, we propose a two-layer multi-dimensional metric to represent the trustworthiness of web service composition programs. We explored several dimensions for both composition level and service level and finalize the metric, as an indicator, to represent the trustworthiness of the automatic service composition. We also propose a method to transfer the multi-dimensional metric into a single value for comparison purpose. A simulation experiment shows that the proposed metric shows better results than the empirical judgement based on past experiences. © 2013 Springer-Verlag.

web graph allows end user to visualize web information and its connectivity. But due to its huge size, it is very challenging to visualize web information from the enormous cyberspace. As a result, web graph lacks simplicity while the user is searching for information. Clustering and filtering techniques have been employed to make the visualization concise but it is often not accurate to the expectation of user because they do not utilize user-centric information. To deliver the information concisely and precisely to the end users according to their interest, we introduce personalized clustering techniques for web information visualization. We propose a system architecture, which considers the user interests while clustering & filtering, to make the web information more meaningful and useful to the end users. By the implementation of the architecture, an experimental example is provided to reflect our approach. © 2013 Springer-Verlag.

the world of web search is changing. Mainstream search engines like Google and Bing are adding social signals to conventional query-based services while social networks like Twitter and Facebook are adding query-based search to sharing-based services. Our search and discovery system, Yokie, harnesses the wisdom of the crowd of communities of Twitter users to create indexes of proto-content (or recently shared content) that is typically not yet indexed by mainstream search engines. the system includes an architecture [13] for a range of contextual queries and ranking strategies beyond standard relevance. In this paper, we focus on evaluating Yokie's ability to retrieve timely, relevant and exclusive results with which users interacted and found useful, compared to other standard web services. © 2013 Springer-Verlag.

Automatic keyphrase extraction from web news is a fundamental task for news documents retrieval, summarization, topic detection and tracking, etc. Most existing work generally treats each web news as an isolated document. With the rapidly increasing popularity of web 2.0 technologies, many web news sites provide various social tools for people to post comments. these comments are highly related to the web news and can be considered as valuable background information which can potentially help improve keyphrase extraction. In this paper we propose a novel method to integrate the comment posts into the task of extracting keyphrases from a web news document. Since comments are typically more casual, conversational, and full of jargon, we introduce several strategies to select useful comments for improving this task. the experimental results show that using comments information can significantly improve keyphrase extraction from web news, especially our comments selection method, using machine learning technology, yields the best result. © 2013 Springer-Verlag.

Traditional information extraction methods mainly rely on visual feature assisted techniques;but without considering the hierarchical dependencies within the paragraph structure, some important information is missing. this paper proposes an integrated approach for extracting academic information from conference web pages. Firstly, web pages are segmented into text blocks by applying a new hybrid page segmentation algorithm which combines visual feature and DOM structure together. then, these text blocks are labeled by a Tree-structured Random Fields model, and the block functions are differentiated using various features such as visual features, semantic features and hierarchical dependencies. Finally, an additional post-processing is introduced to tune the initial annotation results. Our experimental results on real-world data sets demonstrated that the proposed method is able to effectively and accurately extract the needed academic information from conference web pages. © 2013 Springer-Verlag.

Deriving knowledge from information stored in unstructured documents is a major challenge. More specifically, binary relationships representing facts between entities can be extracted to populate semantic triple stores or large knowledge bases. the main constraint of all knowledge extraction approaches is to find a trade-off between quality and scalability. thus, we propose in this paper SPIDER, a novel integrated system for extracting binary relationships at large scale. through series of experiments, we show the benefit of our approach, which in general, outperforms existing systems both in terms of quality (precision and the number of discovered facts) and scalability. © 2013 Springer-Verlag.

Actively identifying service faults and actively trigger service reselection are important management methods for efficiently promoting system reliability. Composite web services, however, are often long-running, loosely coupled and cross-organizational applications. they always run in a highly dynamic and changing environment(the web) which imposes many uncertainties, such as server unavailable or network interruption or temporarily interrupt and so on. Under these uncontrollable circumstances, it is impractical to monitor the changes in Quality of Service parameters for each and every service in order to timely trigger service reselection, due to high computational costs associated with the process. In order to overcome the above problem, this paper proposes an efficient reselection mechanism by mining early patterns in advance. the system will trigger service reselection once potential execution failure is detected by matching these early patterns with the current situation. the process is real time and low-cost, and as such, the proposed mechanism will improve system reliability. © 2013 Springer-Verlag.

RFID technology is increasingly become popular in supply chain management. When passing tags on to the next partner in the supply chain, ownership of the old partner is transferred to the new partner. In this paper, we first introduce some existing RFID tag ownership transfer protocols, then give the security and privacy requirements for such kind of protocols, finally, we propose a novel RFID tag ownership transfer protocol which supports constant-time authentication, and effectively protects the privacy of the old tag owner and the new tag owner. © 2013 Springer-Verlag.
