Content-Based image Retrieval (CBIR) systems have been developed aiming at enabling users to search and retrieve images based on their properties such as shape, color and texture. In this paper we are concerned with shape-based image retrieval. Here, we discuss a recently proposed shape descriptor called contour saliences, defined as the influence areas of its higher curvature points. this paper introduces a robust approach to estimate contour saliences by exploiting the relation between a contour and its skeleton, modifies the original definition to include the location and the value of saliences along the contour and proposes a new metric to compare contour saliences. the paper also evaluates the effectiveness of the proposed descriptor with respect to Fourier Descriptors, Curvature Scale Space and Moment Invariants.

this paper presents image-synthesis techniques to define, animate and visualize scenes simulating the behavior of the open-sea surface. Wave modeling is obtained by means of the bump mapping technique. Wave texture, defined by noise functions, is applied by means of a solid-space animation technique to generate surface animation. An implementation based on the Phong model is used to determine diffuse and specular reflections. As a result of the synthesis process, a set of frames is obtained, to be used to compose the animation.

Shading for cel animation based on images is a recent research topic in computer-assisted animation. this paper proposes an image-based shading pipeline to give a 3D appearance to a 2D character by inspecting the hand-drawn image directly. the proposed method estimates normal vectors on the character's outline and interpolates them over the remaining image. the method does not limit the animator's creative process and requires minimal user intervention. the resulting shading pipeline can be easily applied to photorealistic and non-photorealistic 2D cel animation. In the proposed method, the animator can easily simulate environment reflections on the surface of 2D reflecting objects. As far as the authors are concerned, the proposed technique is the only one in the literature that is genuinely an image-based method for 2D animation.

In this paper we propose a practical blind detection multibit watermarking system. the proposed system is analogous to code division multiplexing in spread spectrum communications. Performance improvements with respect to existing multibit systems are obtained by means of informed embedding. With informed embedding we exploit perceptual modeling by using a wavelet-based multiplicative mask and exploit the digital content information to improve watermark detection. We implemented the Proposed system for fragile and semi-robust multibit watermarks. the obtained results confirm the good system performance considering watermark properties of fidelity, efficiency, data payload and robustness against valumetric distortion sources.

this paper presents the cache configuration exploration of a programmable system, in order to find the best matching between the architecture and a given application. Here, programmable systems composed by processor and memories may be rapidly simulated making use of ArchC, an Architecture Description Language (ADL) based on SystemC Initially designed to model processor architectures, ArchC was extended to support a more detailed description of the memory subsystem, allowing the design space exploration of the whole programmable system. As an example, it is shown an imageprocessing application, running on a SPARC-V8 processor-based architecture, which had its memory organization adjusted to minimize cache misses.

Oscillatory neural networks are a relatively recent approach for the problem of image segmentation. Inside of this context, the oscillator neuron of Terman-Wang is presented, which one is used as base element of an oscillatory network called LEGION (Locally Excitatory Globally Inhibitory Oscillator Network). the continuous version of the LEGION network, based on a set of differential equations, presents high computational complexity and has limited capacity of segmentation, what restricts its practical application, being adequate for implementation in parallel hardware topologies, To reduce the computational complexity in serial computers, an algorithm proposed by Terman and Wang is presented, which implies significant gain of speed in comparison to the continuous version and, in contrast, capacity to discriminate a unlimited number of segments. An interactive version of this algorithm was proposed and the results obtained in segmentation of transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images were evaluated, withthe objective of measuring helium bubbles in silicon samples. As final result we found that the LEGION network presents itself as a singular alternative to solve problems of image segmentation, which provides simultaneously both spatial and temporal discrimination of segments.

Proper scene inference provides the basis for a seamless integration of virtual objects into the real environment. While widely neglected in many AR/MR environments, previous approaches providing good results were based on rather complex setups, often involving mirrored balls, several HDR cameras, and fish eye lenses to achieve proper light probes. In this paper we present an approach requiring a single RGB-D camera image only for generating glossy reflections on virtual objects. Our approach is based on a partial 3D reconstruction of the real environment combined with a screen-space ray-tracing mechanism. We show that our approach allows for convincing reflections of the real environment as well as mutual reflections between virtual objects of an MR environment.

this paper presents a novel visual approach to evaluate, ill a fast and effective way, the development of new image feature extraction techniques concerning content-based image retrieval. this new approach takes advantage of all interactive 3-dimensional visualization fed by the image features obtained through a given extraction technique under analysis. Using controlled test image datasets, the researcher can literally "see" the discrimination power of the image features. this new approach gives a very good insight of the behavior of a given image feature extractor algorithm, which are confirmed by the the well-known precision and recall measurements. We applied the visual approach proposed onto a wavelet-based image retrieval system, which is supporting the development of a Picture Archiving and Communication System that allows to retrieve images by content.

this paper presents two techniques aiming at exploring databases through multivariate visualizations. Both techniques intend to deal withthe problem caused by the limited amount of elements that can be presented simultaneously in traditional visual exploration procedures. the first technique, the Frequency Plot, combines data frequency with interactive filtering to identify clusters and trends in subsets of the database. thus, graphical elements (lines, pixels, icons, or graphical marks) are color differentiated proportionally to how frequent the value being represented is, while interactive filtering allows the selection of interesting partitions of the database. the second technique presented in this work, the Relevance Plot, corresponds to assigning different levels of color distinguishably to visual elements according to their relevance to a user's specified data properties set, which can be chosen visually, and dynamically.
