Experience has shown that process and system level thinking enables significant reductions in design cycle time by avoiding technically correct but irrelevant calculations. Irrelevance often arises when the correct analysis is performed at the wrong stage in the product definition. Current iterative approaches to engineering design require considerable duplication of effort, much of which comes from modeling multiple design abstractions for varied levels and types of analyses. To ensure that appropriate domain knowledge is available at the appropriate time, skills and experience with tools that enable more robust trade studies for increasingly detailed design with inputs from increasingly diverse disciplines are required. Vehicle-focused efforts have broad appeal for attracting high quality, diverse students and facilitate strategic alignment of teaching and research. Towards this end, industry, government, and academic partners have teamed to develop a knowledge-based engineering framework complete with a generative multidisciplinary modeling and analysis environment supporting air vehicle synthesis called AMRaven. AMRaven supports process design automation and integrates design exploration and optimization across multiple disciplines. the framework facilitates rapid vehicle development integrating feature-based 3D geometric modeling, 3D parametric meshing, analysis (aerodynamics, propulsion, trajectory, weight estimation, etc.), and simulation. this paper discusses specifically how the tool is used for conceptual and preliminary design and analysis of airplanes, the concepts of which are based on Advanced Aircraft Analysis (AAA) tools. DARcorporation developed this powerful framework to support the iterative and non-unique process of aircraft conceptual and preliminary design. the system architecture is managed using an object-oriented modeling language called AML (Adaptive modeling Language), developed and marketed by TechnoSoft, Inc. During the last two years we have developed the Tiancalli project. this project includes the construction of TAC SCM compliant agents. the TAC SCM is a contest about different software agents competing in a simulated market that has been organized for four years by Trading Agent Research Group. In order to find the strength and weakness of our agent, we have made a statistic research with both 2005 and 2006 game results. the objective of this article is to present the results obtained in this comparison. Also it is important to discuss a more concrete basis about factors that must be modified, such as the ones which should be kept on the TAC SCM 2007

this paper examines the behavior of single phase and three phase transformers with internal faults under sinusoidal and non-sinusoidal operating conditions. the terminal behavior of the transformer was investigated by coupling the finite element transformer's physical model and external electric circuit simulations. Such a model would allow the efficient representation of the transformers with internal faults. A discrete wavelet transforms (DWT) was then used to extract the different harmonic components of the transformer currents. the key advantages of the DWT are its ability to provide a local representation (in both time and frequency) of the current signal for normal and faulty modes, as well as its applicability to nonstationary signals

Desktop grid (DG) systems use the idle computing power of many volunteered desktop PC's on the Internet to support large-scale computation and storage. For over a decade, DG systems have been the largest and the most powerful distributed computing systems, offering a plethora of computing power at a fraction of the cost of supercomputers. the volunteer desktops participating in DG projects are volatile and heterogeneous, but there is little detailed information about their volatility and heterogeneity. Yet this characterization is essential for the simulation and modelling of such systems. We are conducting a project whose goal is to obtain a detailed picture of the DG landscape. To this end, we are deploying resource sensors on the volunteer desktops to measure the availability of CPU, disk space, memory, and network bandwidth. An initial version of the project has been deployed and currently has about 1,800 participating hosts. the resulting resource measurement data and characterization will be useful for a broad range of research areas, including distributed and peer-to-peer computing, and fault tolerance

simulation is crucial to performance evaluation of switches. Currently stochastic simulation is the predominant approach, which has two drawbacks: few workload patterns and long simulation times. In this paper, we propose a novel switch simulation method that is based on two techniques: exhaustive workload pattern generation and smoothed periodic input generation. the exhaustive workload pattern generation can produce a huge number of nonuniform workload patterns, which far exceeds the traditional few ones; conclusions based on such truly extensive simulations are much more convincing. the periodic input or cell arrival pattern outperforms the stochastic counterpart in terms of easy repetition and fast convergence of simulation; in particular, among periodic inputs, the smoothed periodic input is most favorable to switch scheduling, and hence switches performing poor with it probably performs worse under others. Combining these two techniques together can systematically identify lots of stuck states at which some switches show poor performances such as low throughput. Specifically, this method discovers that the throughput of iSLIP, FIRM and DRRM, each with one iteration, may be lower than 60% under certain nonuniform and smoothed periodic traffic pattern.

Most parallel computing resources are controlled by batch schedulers that place requests for computation in a queue until access to compute nodes are granted. Queue waiting times are notoriously hard to predict, making it difficult for users not only to estimate when their applications may start, but also to pick among multiple batch-scheduled resources the one that produce the shortest turnaround time. As a result, an increasing number of users resort to "redundant requests": several requests are simultaneously submitted to multiple batch schedulers on behalf of a single job; once one of these requests is granted access to compute nodes, the others are canceled. Using simulation as well as experiments with a production batch scheduler we investigate whether redundant requests are harmful in terms of (i) schedule performance and fairness, (ii) system load, and (iii) system predictability. We find that two main issues with redundant requests are load on the middleware and unfairness towards users who do not use redundant requests, which both depend on the number of users who use redundant requests and on the amount of request redundancy these users employ

It is often difficult to perform efficiently a collection of jobs with complex job dependencies due to temporal unpredictability of the grid. One way to mitigate the unpredictability is to schedule job execution in a manner that constantly maximizes the number of jobs that can be sent to workers. A recently developed scheduling theory provides a basis to meet that optimization goal. Intuitively, when the number of such jobs is always large, high parallelism can be maintained, even if the number of workers changes over time in an unpredictable manner. In this paper we present the design, implementation, and evaluation of a practical scheduling tool inspired by the theory. Given a DAGMan input file with interdependent jobs, the tool prioritizes the jobs. the resulting schedule significantly outperforms currently used schedules under a wide range of system parameters, as shown by simulation studies. For example, a scientific data analysis application, AIRSN, was executed at least 13% faster with 95% confidence. An implementation of the tool was integrated with the Condor high-throughput computing system

We present a multipath routing scheme that is designed to increase throughput and alleviate congestion in networks employing shortest path routing. the multipath routing scheme consists of an algorithm to determine a set of multiple disjoint or partially disjoint paths and a mechanism for distributing traffic over a multipath route to reduce the traffic load on a congested link. the algorithm for finding multipath routes is based on shortest path routing and does not require pre-establishment of paths or support for source routing. the mechanism for multipath traffic distribution is triggered at a node when the average load on an outgoing link exceeds a threshold. Our simulation results demonstrate that the proposed congestion-triggered multipath routing scheme can effectively improve network performance by exploiting routing redundancies inherent in the network topology.

Trace-driven simulation is an important technique used in the evaluation of computer architecture innovations. However using it for studying parallel computers and applications is at best very challenging. Acquiring, representing and storing the traces are among the major issues. In this paper, we introduce path grammar guided trace compression (PGGTC) and effective address trace approximation (TA) to speedup compression and reduce trace sizes. PGGTC relies on static analysis to build rules and determine actions to guide online trace compression. Combined with gzip, PGGTC can compresses control flow traces over 330 times smaller than using gzip alone. Compared to the widely popular Sequitur algorithm alone, PGGTC with gzip is on average 40 times faster, while the traces are only 3 times bigger. PGGTC can be also used with Sequitur to double the compression ratios of Sequitur by itself and do it 14 times faster than Sequitur by itself. Address traces of parallel applications with significant randomness are often impossibly large even after being compressed with any lossless scheme including PGGTC. For effective address trace reduction, we introduce trace approximation (TA). Performance-wise similar effective addresses are generated based on very compact summaries of how the memory is accessed during each structure instance instead of compressing them. We demonstrate two approaches: selective dumping and memory signatures, to summarize the properties of effective address sequences. Both approaches are validated by feeding the generated approximate trace to cache simulators of 25 different configurations. the simulated results are very close to the simulation results based on full effective traces while the selective dumped address or memory signatures require several order of magnitude less disk space to store. In summary, we move trace-driven simulation into the realm of the feasible for larger parallel machines and applications
