the development of embedded and real-time systems for Machine Learning data processing is challenging (e.g. IoT). Low latency, low power consumption and reduced hardware complexity should be the characteristics of such systems. Considering prosthetic applications, which are error-tolerant, a technique that tunes the precision of operands and operations has been chosen for a Machine Learning algorithm used for tactile data processing. this paper presents the implementation of a Tunable Floating-Point (TFP) representation into a Singular-Value Decomposition (SVD) algorithm based on the One-Sided Jacobi method. the TFP representations demonstrate high performance and efficiency improvements of the SVD algorithm.

the design and development process of complex products is a multidisciplinary collaborative process, which requires the cooperation of distributed teams. However, traditional simulation methods are usually discipline-oriented and there is a lack of efficiency in terms of share and reuse of the existing simulation models in a distributed and collaborative environment. In order to address this problem, we propose a multi-level knowledge framework for simulation model knowledge representation, retrieval and reasoning. Specifically, a simulation knowledge model by the name of "Engineering-APP" is developed to enable simulation knowledge sharing by using Web Service technology. the Engineering-APP model represents an integrated simulation knowledge wrapper, which includes information about the geometric model, design algorithm or analysis codes. Based on the Engineering-APP model, an intelligent collaborative prototype system is developed to support the design process with different stakeholders. through an engineering case study, it is demonstrated that the proposed framework and Engineering-APP are effective and efficient for the representation and reuse of existing simulation models knowledge.

Battery operation is influenced by the temperature. thus, thermal modelling is an important aspect for battery electric vehicles (EVs). Generally the electro-thermal parameters are identified for one single cell. In EVs the battery is divided into several modules (groups of cells side by side). the objective of this paper is to quantify the accuracy by using the electro-thermal parameters of one single cell to model the behavior of a module. the temperature of a cell inside a module and the voltage of this module are recorded during a real driving cycle in an instrumented commercial EV. Considering the module as a group of identical single cells leads to an error of 7% for module voltage and 4.8% on the self-heating.

As a second-order pooled representation, covariance matrix has attracted much attention in visual recognition, and some pioneering works have recently integrated it into deep learning. A recent study shows that kernel matrix works considerably better than covariance matrix for this kind of representation, by modeling the higher-order, nonlinear relationship among pooled visual descriptors. Nevertheless, in that study neither the descriptors nor the kernel matrix is deeply learned. Worse, they are considered separately, hindering the pursuit of an optimal representation. To improve this situation, this work designs a deep network that jointly learns local descriptors and kernel-matrix-based pooled representation in an end-to-end manner. the derivatives for the mapping from a local descriptor set to this representation are derived to carry out backpropagation. More importantly, we introduce the Daleckii-Krein formula from Operator theory to give a concise and unified result on differentiating general functions defined on symmetric positive-definite (SPD) matrix, which shows its better numerical stability in conducting backpropagation compared with the existing method when handling the Riemannian geometry of SPD matrix. Experiments on fine-grained image benchmark datasets not only show the superiority of kernel-matrix-based SPD representation with deep local descriptors, but also verify the advantage of the proposed deep network in pursuing better SPD representations. Also, ablation study is provided to explain why and from where these improvements are attained.

Power systems are always subject to uncertainties. When considering multiple areas, this uncertainty affects the state of the interconnections and, as a result, influences the behavior of market agents. this paper proposes a high-performing methodology to incorporate market power in a multi-area electricity market model considering medium-term uncertainties. To do so, it employs a Monte Carlo simulation of a market equilibrium model with a comprehensive representation of the system. To achieve a suitable performance with this procedure, a massive number of simulations must be carried out, making the problem computationally intensive. the efficiency of the methodology proposed is able to decrease the size of the deterministic model under non-perfect competition by reducing the possible network configurations. this makes the program computationally tractable, and valuable for market agents to integrate in the decision-making process. Finally, the methodology has been applied to an illustrative case of the European electricity market.

Cyber adversaries continue to become more proficient and sophisticated, increasing the vulnerability of the network systems that pervade all aspects of our lives. While there are many approaches to modeling network behavior and identifying anomalous and potentially malicious traffic, most of these approaches detect attacks once they have already occurred, enabling reaction only after the damage has been done. In traditional security studies, mitigating attacks has been a focus of many research and planning efforts, leading to a rich field of adversarial modeling to represent and predict what an adversary might do. In this paper, we present an analogous approach to modeling cyber adversaries to gain a deeper understanding of the behavioral dynamics underlying cyber attacks and enable predictive analytics and proactive defensive planning. We present a hybrid modeling approach that combines aspects of cognitive modeling, decision-theory, and reactive planning to capture different facets of adversary decision making and behavior.

this paper describes the methods for creating an event-based simulation used to predict DDoS attacks against countries following international events. the model uses various parameters for an event and generates time series DDoS attack data for the two countries over one week. the simulation uses a weighted, tit-for-tat approach in determining retaliation. the model was evaluated using attack data of actual events provided by Arbor Networks consisting of a two-week interval plus a day, centered around the start of the events. the model was sufficient in predicting the change in frequency of DDoS attacks following hostile diplomatic events, but it was unsuccessful at simulating attacks following friendly, military, and economic events. Overall, the resulting simulation was a successful baseline for future work in the field.

this paper presents a compact transistor model for circuit design in a flexible amorphous indium gallium zinc oxide (a-IGZO) thin-film transistor (TFT) technology. the presented model is technology specific and builds upon the Verilog-A Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute amorphous silicon TFT (RPI-aTFT) model. On the basis of extensive device characterization, we introduce appropriate new equations and parameters that enable an accurate and efficient behavioral representation of a-IGZO TFTs. In this work, we address the modelling of short channel effects, the scalability for channel lengths from 5 mu m to 50 mu m, as well as the presence of process variation. Using this model, a Cherry-Hooper amplifier is designed, analyzed, implemented in a flexible a-IGZO TFT technology, and characterized. Finally, to validate the presented transistor model, we compare circuit simulations and measurements of the Cherry-Hooper amplifier circuit. the amplifier provides a voltage gain of 9.5 dB and has a GBW of 7.2 MHz from a supply voltage of 6 V. the simulation using our new compact transistor model resembles the measured characteristics very well. It predicts a voltage gain of 10.4 dB and a GBW of 7.0 MHz.
