Web service composition involves the combination of a number of existing web services to create a value-added one. WS-BPEL is a promising language which describes web set-vice composition in form of business processes. However, WS-BPEL is an XML-based language and may suffer from ambiguities or some erroneous properties. the analysis and verification of business processes specified in WS-BPEL by a formal method has been a hot topic in the research community lately. In this paper we propose a method to model and analyze WS-BPEL business processes based on ServiceNet, a special class of Petri nets. Unlike most of the existing work which analyze only control flow properties of WS-BPEL business processes but neglect data flow properties, our method models and analyzes both control properties and data properties of WS-BPEL business processes. We present the transformation rules of WS-BPEL business processes into ServiceNet and enrich the reduction rules of ServiceNet by applying them in some practical projects. their the throughness of a business processes can be verified by reducing its ServiceNet representation based on some reduction rules. Moreover, we define some data-aspect properties of WS-BPEL business processes and give the corresponding checking algorithm.

the solution of continuous and discrete-time Markovian models is still challenging mainly when we model large complex systems, for example, to obtain performance indexes of parallel and distributed systems. However, iterative numerical algorithms, even well-fitted to a multidimensional structured representation of Markov chains, still face the state space explosion problem. Discrete-event simulations can estimate the stationary distribution based on long run trajectories and are also alternative methods to estimate performance indexes of models. Perfect simulation algorithms directly build steady-state samples avoiding the warm-up period and the initial state bias of forward simulations. this paper introduces the concepts of backward coupling and the advantages of monotonicity properties and component-wise characteristics to simulate Stochastic Automata Networks (SAN). the main contribution is a novel technique to solve SAN descriptions originally unsolvable by iterative methods due to large state spaces. this method is extremely efficient when the state space is large and the model has dynamic monotonicity because it is possible to contract the reachable state space in a smaller set of maximal states. Component-wise characteristics also contribute to the state space reduction extracting extremal states of the model underlying chain. the efficiency of this technique applied to sample generation using perfect simulation is compared to the overall efficiency of using an iterative numerical method to predict performance indexes of SAN models.

In the field of hydrological modelling, there is mostly a lack of spatially distributed data that may allow a detailed analysis of simulation results. this study was to demonstrate that remote sensing can partly fill this gap, as combining reflective and thermal data allows the retrieval of estimates for evapotranspiration (ET). Two Landsat-5 TM scenes were analysed, and the results were afterwards compared to the daily output of the Precipitation Runoff modeling System, a conceptual model based on Hydrologic Response Units and designed for meso-to macroscale applications. For the study site, the mesoscale Ruwer basin located in the low mountain range of Rhineland-Palatinate (Germany), an overall good agreement of ET estimates retrieved by both approaches was found. At one date, some mismatches indicated clear inconsistencies in the model structure and parameterisation scheme. Based on these findings, a modified soil module was implemented to allow for a more realistic specification of land use dependant parameters. After this, PRMS provided ET estimates now very similar to those from Landsat TM, and the RMSE was reduced from 1.30 to 0.86 mm. these results indicate, that the representation of the hydrological cycle by hydrological modelling may be improved by the integration of appropriate remote sensing data.

As the electronic products are desired to have many functions with low weight and small size increasingly, the ultra-thin and multi-layer printed circuit boards (PCBs) are required to be used extensively in electronic packaging assemblies. Usually, these multi-layer PCBs consist of multiple layers of woven glass fiber reinforced epoxy resin composite substrate sandwiched between copper foils. the mechanical properties of these multi-layer PCBs can be represented basically by their bending stiffness. However, complex woven composite material properties complicate the bending stiffness analysis. In this research, a finite element analysis model was suggested to describe the bending behavior of woven fiber composite multi-layer PCB. Both finite element simulation and experiment were employed in this study. Since the small discrepancy between the numerical simulation and experimental results was obtained, the availability of this finite element model was confirmed by comparison with each other. And also the effects of woven fiber composite material properties of the multi-layer PCB on the bending phenomenon were investigated. (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

the importance of business continuity and disaster recovery (BC/DR,) plaits has grown considerably in the recent years, becoming well-established practice to achieve organization's resiliency. there are several applicable standards, like BS 25999-1:2006, sets of guidelines and best practices in this field. BC/DR, plaits are typically text documents and exercising is still the main measure used to verify them. Oil the contrary, to the common practice we suggest to model BC/DR plans as business processes using ARIS methodology and models, which have proven successful in the Enterprise Resource Planning systems projects. this provides uniform representation of BC/DR, plans that can be applied across the whole distributed organization, strengthens the efficiency of traditional manual analysis techniques like walk-throughs, helps to achieve completeness, consistency and makes possible computer simulation, of BC/DR processes. Timing and dynamic behavior, resource utilization and completeness properties have. been also defined. It is possible to anal yze them with computer support, based on proposed ARIS model of BC/DR plan.

In our work, the task of complex computer-based system design optimization involves exploration of a number of possible candidate designs matching the optimisation criteria. However, the process by which the possible candidate designs are generated and rated is fundamental to an optimal outcome. It is dependent upon the set of system characteristics deemed relevant by the designer given the systems requirements. We propose a method which is aimed at providing the designer with guidance based upon description of the possible causal relationships between various system characteristics and qualities. this guidance information is obtained by employing principles of multiparadigm simulation to generate a set of data which is then processed by an algorithm to generate a Bayesian Belief Network representation of causalities present in the source system. Furthermore, we address the issues and tools associated with application of the proposed method by presenting a detailed simulation and network generation effort undertaken as part of a significant industrial case study.

Software plays an increasingly important role in modern safety-critical systems. Although, research has been done to integrate software into the classical probabilistic risk assessment (PRA) framework, current PRA practice overwhelmingly neglects the contribution of software to system risk. Dynamic probabilistic risk assessment (DPRA) is considered to be the next generation of PRA techniques. DPRA is a set of methods and techniques in which simulation models that represent the behavior of the elements of a system are exercised in order to identify risks and vulnerabilities of the system. the fact remains, however, that modeling software for use in the DPRA framework is also quite complex and very little has been done to address the question directly and comprehensively. this paper develops a methodology to integrate software contributions in the DPRA environment. the framework includes a software representation, and an approach to incorporate the software representation into the DPRA environment SimPRA. the software representation is based on multi-level objects and the paper also proposes a framework to simulate the multi-level objects in the simulation-based DPRA environment. this is a new methodology to address the state explosion problem in the DPRA environment. this study is the first systematic effort to integrate software risk contributions into DPRA environments. Natural mountains and valleys are gradually eroded by rainfall and river flows. Physically-based modeling of this complex phenomenon is a major concern in producing realistic synthesized terrains. However despite some recent improvements, existing algorithms are still computationally expensive, leading to a time-consuming process fairly impractical for terrain designers and 3D artists.

In a mass casualty incident, injured and at-risk patients will pass through a continuum of care from many different providers acting as a team in a clinical environment. As presented at MMVR 14 [Kaufman, et al 2006], formative evaluations have shown that simulation practice is nearly as good as, and in some cases better than, live exercises for stimulating learners to integrate their procedural knowledge in new circumstances through experiential practice. However, to date, multiplayer game technologies have given limited physiological fidelity to their characters, thus limiting the realism and complexity of the scenarios that can be practiced by medical professionals. this paper describes the status of a follow-on program to merge medical and gaming technologies so that computer generated, but human-controlled, avatars used in a simulated, mass casualty training environment will exhibit realistic life signs. this advance introduces a new level of medical fidelity to simulated mass casualty scenarios that can represent thousands of injuries. the program is identifying the critical instructional challenges and related system engineering issues associated with the incorporation of multiple state-of-the-art physiological models into the computer generated synthetic representation of patients. the work is a collaboration between Forterra Systems and the SUMMIT group of Stanford University Medical School, and is sponsored by the US Army Medical Command's Telemedicine and Advanced Technologies Research Center (TATRC).

the simulation of fluid flow in fractured reservoirs is mostly based on the Warren-Root formulation in which the matrix is dissected into blocks by fractures(1). In modern simulators, the Warren-Root formulation has been extended to account for fluid flow in the matrix as well as in the fractures(2). these two media of contrasting transmissibility and storage capacity constitute the basis of dual porosity dual permeability modeling. Hydraulic connection between the two media is managed via a transfer function. this formulation is appropriate for cases with diffuse interconnected fractures. Alternatively, fractures can be modeled explicitly by capturing their geometries, shapes and sizes in the form of numerical grid cells. But this would be prohibitively costly in terms of run time and memory. this paper presents a method that is suitable for giant fields that are dominated by clusters of sub-vertical fractures called fracture corridors. It is based on a hybrid approach of the two alternatives mentioned. the effective Warren-Root and fracture parameters are adjusted to mimic explicit fracture modeling thereby capturing the advantages of both. the method was applied to a giant carbonate field in Saudi Arabia, which has both fracture corridors and super-permeable bodies. these bodies are typically horizontal and they interconnect with the fracture corridors to form a combined high conductivity medium which is responsible for the unusual water movement observed in some parts of the field. the full field simulation model contains a homogeneous matrix and a fracture grid comprised of fracture corridors and super-permeable bodies. Fluid segregation is assumed in the fracture system in agreement with the physics inside conductive vertical fractures. the matrix-fracture corridor and the matrix-super permeable body exchanges are represented in a manner similar to matrix-fracture transfers in the Warren-Root dual-porosity system.
