programming is a fundamental subject in the majority of technology-oriented degrees, particularly in Computer Engineering programs. Mastering programming requires continuous practice to understand the syntax, semantics, and execution of the chosen programming language, as well as developing the problem-solving mindset necessary for effective coding. Rapid feedback on errors made during exercises is essential for skill improvement. However, manual grading of practices and exams is a challenging and time-consuming task in continuous assessment systems. this work aims to demonstrate the application of an existing tool, VPL (Virtual programming Lab), integrated with JUnit tests, for auto-grading final programming exams. the proposal has been successfully implemented in the object-oriented programming (OOP) course, yielding highly satisfactory results. © the Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2024.

Feature-oriented programming (FOP) is an extension of ob- ject-oriented programming to support software variability by refining existing classes and methods. In order to increase the reliability of all implemented program variants, we integrate design by contract (DbC) with FOP. DbC is an approach to build reliable object-oriented software by specifying methods with contracts. Contracts are annotations that document and formally specify behavior, and can be used for formal verification of correctness or as test oracles. We present and discuss five approaches to define contracts of methods and their refinements in FOP. Furthermore, we share our insights gained by performing five case studies. this work is a foundation for research on the analysis of feature-oriented programs (e.g., for verifying functional correctness or for detecting feature interactions). © 2012 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

Visual object database browsers are essentially based on two kinds of interactions: navigation within a collection of objects, and navigation between objects by the way of their relationships. these two inter-actional operators have proven to adequately support the main user task addressed by these tools, that is, exploring the states of a set of related objects. In temporal object databases, visual browsing tools should additionally support users tasks such as examining a snapshot of a collection of objects at a given instant, or detecting changes within object states. In this paper, we show that the two interactional operators supported by classical object browsers do not adequately address these tasks. We consequently propose an interactional operator dedicated to navigation through time, and we study how it may be orthogonally integrated with the above two. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2001.

programming with Java monitors is recognized to be difficult, and potentially inefficient due to many useless context switches induced by the notifyAll primitive. this paper presents SOM, Sequential object Monitors, as an alternative to programming with Java monitors. Reifying monitor method calls as requests, and providing full access to the pending request queue, gives rise to fully sequential monitors: the SOM programmer gets away from any code interleaving. Moreover, useless context switches are avoided. Finally, from a software engineering point of view, SOM promotes separation of concerns, by untangling the synchronization concern from the application logic. this paper illustrates SOM expressiveness with several classical concurrency problems, and high-level abstractions like guards and chords. Benchmarks of the implementation confirm the expected efficiency. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2004.

Optimizing performance of schema evolution sequences

More than ever before schema transformation is a prevalent problem that needs to be addressed to accomplish for example the mi- gration of legacy systems to the newer OODB systems, the generation of structured web pages from data in database systems, or the integration of systems with different native data models. Such schema transformations are typically composed of a sequence of schema evolution operations. the execution of such sequences can be very time-intensive, possibly requi- ring many hours or even days and thus effectively making the database unavailable for unacceptable time spans. While researchers have looked at the deferred execution approach for schema evolution in an effort to improve availability of the system, to the best of our knowledge ours is the ffrst effort to provide a direct optimization strategy for a sequence of changes. In this paper, we propose heuristics for the iterative elimination and cancellation of schema evolution primitives as well as for the merging of database modiffcations of primitives such that they can be performed in one effcient transformation pass over the database. In addition we show the correctness of our optimization approach, thus guaranteeing that the initial input and the optimized output schema evolution se- quence produce the same final schema and data state. We provide proof of the algorithm's optimality by establishing the confluence property of our problem search space, i.e., we show that the iterative application of our heuristics always terminates and converges to a unique minimal sequence. Moreover, we have conducted experimental studies that de- monstrate the performance gains achieved by our proposed optimization technique over previous solutions. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2001.

Network-based computer environments emulating selected aspects of the physical world and allowing interaction among their human users first appeared in the late 1970s. these environments implemented a networked version of a role-playing fantasy game known as Dungeons and Dragons, hence their acronym MUD (Multi-user Dungeons). When it became obvious that many MUD users use the environment mainly to meet virtually with other users rather than to play games, new forms of MUDs and other types of emulated universes were developed and the term Virtual Environment (VE) was introduced to refer to all of them. Since their inception, VEs evolved in several interesting directions, including environments with new types of user interfaces, for example emulating visual aspects of physical reality via VRML and other means [8], and object-oriented environments known as MOOs (MUD object-oriented) allowing their users to extend the environment and communicate with it via a programming language [22]. As virtual environments became better known and more sophisticated, their user populations reached hundreds of thousands. At present, VEs are used for recreation, education [16], particularly distance education, and in work, particularly for collaboration among physically separated team members [6, 26, 36, 15, 45]. there is also a large and growing body of research on existing and potential VE uses, and several meetings similar to this workshop are held every year to address both the usage and the technical aspects of VEs. Collaborative work is, of course, an area of major interest to software developers and we will thus address this issue further.

Modern programming Languages (object oriented Languages), are equipped with sophisticated mechanisms to assist developers in organizing the source code. For instance, Java and Python use package names to resolve symbols. In Java, a package is a namespace declared at the top of each class or interface. there are several reasons for using packages in the source code: 1) Packages can prevent naming conflicts, (e.g., identical class name in two packages is possible with no conflict). 2) Packages can categorize the relevant and/or similar classes or interfaces in some conceptual and logical containers that assist developers in easier maintenance and a better understanding of the design of the software’s architecture. 3) Structured packaging is one of the core components of a clean architecture design. Developers may apply different strategies to structure the packages and these differences have repercussions in the quality and maintainability of the software architecture. In this work, we run a set of experiments on a number of open-source Java projects and analyse the packaging structures from a source-code structural and artifact (class, method, variable) names perspective. these experiments aim to investigate 1) the existence of any associations between the packaging structure and textual factors (artefact names) of the classes inside the package;and 2) what textual factors (artifact names) tend to be more associated with the package structure. the results of this research indicate that, on average, class names and inheritance (supper class names) tend to be considered as a packaging strategy. the focus on identifying ‘naturally’ occurring similarities in the packaging of software in the ‘wild’ is underpinned by the long-term objective to build developer-friendly architecture conformance protocols which help prevent architectural erosion. © 2021 Copyright for this paper by its authors. the number of application domains in which systems must deliver continuous reliable service during update is growing as well as the application of aspect-oriented paradigm in such systems. In this paper we address the problem of updating running aspect-oriented software. the goal of the research is to design and to build the model for dynamic update of aspect-oriented software considering continuity of updates (in the presence of prior updates) that enables such software to be updated at runtime.

An identifier is an important key in mapping program elements onto domain knowledge for the purpose of program comprehension. therefore, if identifiers in a program have inappropriate names, developers can waste a lot of time trying to understand the program. this paper proposes a method for extracting and gathering verb-object (V-O) relations, as good examples of naming, from source code written in an object-oriented programming language. For each of several application domains, dictionaries containing the V-O relations are built and evaluated by software developers. the evaluation results confirm that the relations in the dictionaries are adequate in many cases.

We propose the flying object that adapts itself to the environment by means of a dynamic behavior change mechanism. the flying object is a user-defined, first-class and abstract entity. Such properties provide independency and transparency. the flying object model establishes a unique decomposition of the flying object. In this model, the flying object consists of four objects: the delegater that encapsulates the implementation, the message handler that interprets the messages, the event handler that provides adaptation strategies and the context object that holds a state beyond the adaptation. the ability of accommodation, the openness, is one of the great contributions of this model because many functions such as object migration, load balancing, distributed transaction management, the communication protocols and even adaptation strategies can be introduced by the message handler and the event handler as a plug-in module. Furthermore, a source code translation technique is introduced for automatic decomposition of the flying object as a replacement for the virtual machine customizations or low-level programming. the delegater and the context object are instantiated from the same translated class to minimize maintenance costs of classes as a result of an automatic translation. therefore, the system organized by the flying object is best suited for the open distributed environment.
