the present paper deals with a common problem in water supply systems - detection of partial blockages in pipelines. A mathematical model based on damping of fluid transients for the case of several partial blockages in a pipe is analyzed. A one-dimensional linearized equation for unsteady pressure perturbation is solved analytically by the method of the Laplace transform. the analysis is based on blockage-induced transient damping of individual Fourier components of the solution. the limitations of the formula for blockage detection proposed in the literature are discussed.

this paper studies the adoption of periodic gaits of quadruped animals by multilegged artificial locomotion systems. the purpose is to determine the gait to adopt at different velocities, under distinct robot and locomotion conditions, based on two performance measures. A set of experiments reveals the influence of the gait and the body and ground parameters upon the proposed indices. It is verified that the gait should be adapted to the robot forward velocity and to the conditions under which the robot is moving. the experiments also reveal that a gait that decreases the energy consumption generally implies an increase in the trajectory following errors.

this paper describes an approach for comparative evaluation of the response of a system in different domains in the early stage of the design process. the solution proposed here is based on the following ideas: feature based product representation, which serves as a 'shared product description';estimation of the response of the system in a set of points (training points) through automatic simulation;categorization of the system response;generalization to other design regions through classification trees;evaluation of reliability. the result is an approximated 'model' of the system we are investigating. the level of detail of the model can be modified by changing the number of classes used to categorize the response.

3D surface flattening is a hot research theme in the field of computer aided design and manufacture. A numerical simulation method for surface flattening is proposed in this paper. First of all, a 3D surface is flattened to a 2D pattern by Geodesic curvature method. then an accurate 2D pattern is created through building up the mass-spring model and carrying out the interactive operation. On the other hand, it can reduce the strain energy and improve the accuracy of 2D pattern appearance by way of trimmed surface. Finally, several examples of developable and non-developable surfaces are simulated in order to prove the feasibility of the method in this paper.

Animat agent models constitute an important tool for studying emergent phenomena in large scale complex systems. We have developed a spatial animat agent model to investigate predator-prey interactions and other effects arising from emergent cooperation and competition. the rules for microscopic animat predation and reproduction critically affect the stability of model systems. We report on our experiments on tuning the stability and growth of animat population models against a background of multiple animat species and the emergence of spatial segregation.

this paper illustrates how symbolically assisted numeric computation simulations can be effectively used in solving engineering problems. the examples considered are restricted to specific problems derived from electric power, mechanical and electronics engineering and include: determination of a power system steady state operation conditions (so-called, power flow problem), so-called economic dispatch as one of the most important power system engineering optimization problems, dynamics of an elementary mechanical system with mass, damper, and spring, and finally a basic electronics engineering problem.

In this paper a new a approach for a three-phase instantaneous active and reactive power measurements is presented. this method principle is based on the line currents and tensions measurements withthe Hall leads, transformation them in the orthogonal components employing two AD2S100 vector processors and the instantaneous active and reactive calculus in real time. the validity of these measurements types is confirmed by experiments and numerical simulation results.

the paper presents the calculus program expert kind "WINDOW-WALL" for the modelling and simulation of the thermal transfer through structures with complex formation for the heat flow and thermal resistance, for windows made off wood, PVC, metal, aluminum. the program also takes into account the interaction between the window and the wall where is fitted in. this expert system of analysis for windows and doors permits the analyze for various constructional solutions. the purpose is the optimization of its structures for a better energy economics. the numerical calculus and results are presented for the homologation of the calculus program "RAMA"/" FRAMEWORK" made in accordance to the methodology from ISO 10077/2:2003 [4] for examples from the figure D 10 and D 1, annex F. the methodology belonging to the norm refers to the calculus of the thermal transmission coefficients and to the adiabatic conditions at the contact between the window framework and the wall in which it is fitted.

this paper introduces a robust mathematical technique for modeling and simulation of DC PM motors. the proposed methodology fits experimental data, obtained from Dynolab-test, to an analytical model that is capable of faithfully reproducing all involved signals and motor parameters. the proposed mathematical model is assumed linear to facilitate the modeling process. Nonlinear effects due to changing operating conditions are investigated, and a robust data-fitting algorithm is augmented to the linear model to compensate for their effects. the proposed technique is exemplified by an HVAC motor that has typical applications in automotive industry. the simulations are carried out using Saber (R) software and verified using MATLAB (R). Practicality of the proposed technique is addressed and its extensibility to other similar problems in different fields is also discussed.

Data concerning telephone calls is collected by telecommunications operators, typically to support the billing process. However, such records may also be analysed in order to identify cases of fraudulent usage, which may depend critically on differentiating normal from abnormal behavioural patterns. Data to support empirical study by the research community within the fraud detection area is hard to acquire, as it contains sensitive information, from both commercial and personal perspectives. Hence, the synthesis of representative data is a viable way forward, provided reasonable models for telecommunications traffic are available. this paper provides such models, based on the behaviour of a sample of 250 subscribers over a 52 week period. this work is partially funded by the EC 6th Framework IST project Misuse Detection System (IST-026459). Data was provided by Polska Telefonia Cyfrowa.
