the use of building performance simulation (BPS) can substantially help in improving building design towards higher occupant comfort and lower fuel consumption, while reducing emission of greenhouse gasses. Unfortunately, current BPS tools do not allow inter-tool communication and thus limit a modeler to the component models available in the simulation software which happens to be used. A pragmatic way forward would be to enable co-simulation by externally coupled (legacy) tools. this means that each coupled software would represent only that part of the overall building and system configuration that it is able to model. the overall system is represented by the coupled models, which exchange simulation data during run-time. In this way, shortcomings of each tool can be overcome, and advantages of individual tools can be exploited. the work underlying this paper addresses co-simulation of building energy and heating, ventilation and air-conditioning (HVAC) models. So far, the research focus has been on thermodynamic issues such as which variables should be exchanged and at what frequency, rather than on mathematic or computer science aspects. this paper specifies and discusses the requirements for BPS software in order to enable co-simulation of building and HVAC system configurations.

A method for developing quantitative prediction of riverbank erosion is presented where a detailed comparison has been made among coarse grid, intermediate grid and fine grid predictions for the bank erosion in a large alluvial river in the Jamuna in Bangladesh. In the intermediate grid modelling, the area of interest has further been stretched where the grid sizes are further reduced for higher resolution having more smaller mesh sizes than that of even the fine grid schematization. Overall reduction of the mesh size in fine grid model in the entire computation domain by more than one half than the coarse grid model has limitations in computational time and runtime. the intermediate grid modelling with sufficient stretching function applied at particular locations become necessary for representation of engineering measures in the model grid that produces better results thus saving the computational time and memory.

Experience of development and practical use of a virtual test bench is considered. the bench includes control device of the serial medium voltage (MV) controlled drive and computer model of a drive power part: mechanism, motor, power part of a frequency converter, power supply system. Computer model is connected with real control cabinet and operates in real time. Advanced models [1] of power part elements are used in model of a power part. And a new model of induction motor is developed, taking into account skin effect in rotor bars. Correspondence between processes of the bench and processes of real operating drives is confirmed many times. But the bench gives possibility to investigate processes, those are inaccessible for investigation in real drives, especially processes while disturbances in power system. the bench is used for pre-project simulation also. this gives possibility for better choice of equipment, to provide desired steady-state regimes and transients in a drive itself and in power supply system.

the problem of distributed diagnosis in network failures and repairs is considered in this study. the basic idea behind incorporating a fault tolerance capability to a distributed system is to provide the system with extra (redundant) resources. A number of investigations have been attempted to extend traditional notions of "fault-tolerant computing", to deal with the problem of failures, which affect the facilities of distributed systems and computer networks. the purpose of this study is to simulate a distributed system and carry out fault diagnosis under arbitrary and completely connected Network topologies. the distributed system level diagnosis algorithms discussed in this study give a comprehensive idea about various issues one must keep track of while going to develop such fault tolerance algorithms. Since "system level diagnosis" is one of the steps in the process of building "distributed fault-tolerant systems", reliability of such a system depends heavily on proper functioning of the diagnosis algorithm. the distributed system has been simulated in JAVA using the Console. java program to create multiple windows, each one representing a different system node. Afterwards, distributed diagnosis algorithms have been simulated using this environment.

the flat-band voltage is a key parameter in the electrical characterization of the SOI wafers. the usual models for the flat-band voltage were established for SOI structures with 2 mu m...0.2 mu m Si-film thickness and 40...20nm front oxide thickness. the electric charge from the buried oxide was poorly investigated, because the interesting conduction occurs in the vicinity of the front oxide. But the pseudo-MOS transistor, used as a dedicated device for electrical characterization, exclusively works with buried oxide. the classical model of V-FB, deduced for the pseudo-MOS transistors with micronic sizes, presents some deficiencies in the nanodevice area. the downscaling consequences of the SOI wafers on the flat-band voltage modeling were studied in this paper. the simulations and modeling were focused on the electric charges arisen at Si/SiO2/Si interfaces.

Recent years have seen wider application of laser transmission welding (LTW) as a means for joining plastic parts. this paper presents a three-dimensional (3-D) transient thermal model of LTW solved with the finite element method (FEM). A modified T-like joint geometry was modelled for unreinforced nylon 6 specimens. this thermal model addressed the heating and cooling stages in a laser welding process with a moving laser beam. In a previous study, the authors showed that the two-dimensional (2-D) model has the potential to predict the molten zone depth as well as transient temperature distribution along the weld line. this paper eliminates some simplifying assumptions made in the previous studies and takes into account the heat conduction along the beam travel direction.

this paper states the basic principles of the MORM Model (Man-Machine Occupational Risk modelling), which is devised for modelling risk in wide-scaled industrial systems. It does focus on the discretization measures for simulation, which is designed to express a machine's interconnection and the process model according to the modular approach we adapted to realise the MORM model. the MORM methodology is based on several techniques, such as concurrent object oriented implementation, algebraic Petri nets, statistic and probability modelling, etc. this paper shows how machines interconnection data is implemented using formal methods, and object oriented techniques, and how this implementation is integrated to the simulation and analysis process.

this paper describes a proposed software design process with model-based evaluation approach to high performance image processing algorithms for Embedded Vision Systems (EVS). the resulted library (so called PfeLib) encloses software primitives which are optimized target specific to reach a high execution performance. However, due to the high computational complexity of most computer vision algorithms, realization of such applications on embedded systems is not a straight forward task. therefore, the functional behavior of each algorithm was evaluated by the use of MATLAB Simulink. the main goal was to accelerate development and to improve the quality of the resulting algorithms and applications by systematic design, development and test. Target specific code generation was performed after modeling and simulation, where the generated code was evaluated and compared to the hand optimized code of the PfeLib. this resulted in Software In the Loop (SIL) simulation of the hand coded algorithms using MATLAB Simulink. Two Texas Instruments DSP Starter Kit (DSK) boards were used for evaluation and In-the-Loop testing. For instrumentation of the generated code, the used CPU cycles of the core part of the algorithm are counted as a measure for the mean execution time.

An expression is developed to describe the cyclic stress-strain curve based on the hypothesis that the stress-strain coordinates of the upper and lower branches of the hysteresis loop are symmetrical about an imaginary line drawn between the origin and the tip of the loop. Additional, in accordance with the given hypothesis, a set of stress-strain relationships is also presented to simulate the tensile branch of the stable hysteresis loop. Furthermore, theoretical plastic work is calculated by integrating the area within the constructed hysteresis loop. It is noted that the mathematical derivations are performed in accordance with the endochronic theory of plasticity. the accuracy of the proposed set of stress-strain relationships is verified by conducting fully-reversed constant strain amplitude fatigue tests on the 304 stainless steel. Regarding the symmetry of the stable hysteresis loop, the hypothesis is confirmed by experimental data. the experimental and simulation results are found to be in good agreement, hence confirming the accuracy of the analytical stress-strain relationships. the theoretical plastic work calculated is employed to predict the fatigue lives of the 304 stainless steel via plastic-work-life curves. Again, a good agreement is found between the two sets of results.

In Direct Numerical simulation, the great demand for both memory and CPU time is even increased dealing with chemical reactive phenomena. Hence, parallel computing techniques are needed. Only recently, DNS of reacting phenomena has been approached in 3-D configuration [1, 2]. In this work, massively parallel computations of a three-dimensional reacting transient jet are presented. the simulations have been performed on a Linux Beowulf Cluster HP-IA32, with 36 biprocessor nodes ProLiant DL360. An MPI DNS code has been developed and its performance has been assessed by computing the characteristic parameters of the parallel implementation. the values of speed up show good scalability of the code. An initial computation has been carried out by simulating the n-heptane ignition in a transient jet with a detailed kinetic mechanism [3]. As a consequence of the choice of initial conditions, the ignition takes place in the early stages of the development of the mixing and the phenomenon is mainly dominated by the large two-dimensional vortex structures [4]. Hence, the results, in terms of ignition delay time and localization of ignition spots, are comparable with those obtained in two-dimensional configurations [5]. Next, the influence of 3-D vortex stretching on the ignition phenomenon will be analysed.
