Given that power is one of the biggest concerns of embedded systems, many devices have replaced DRAM with nonvolatile Phase Change Memories (PCM). Some applications need to adhere to strict timing constraints and thus their temporal behavior must be analyzed before deploying them. Moreover, modern systems typically contain multiple cores, causing an application to incur significant delays due to the contention for the shared bus and shared main memory (PCM in this work). One of the challenges in the timing analysis for PCM main memories is the high discrepancy between read and write latencies and the high contention among cores. Finding an upper bound on these delays is non-trivial mainly because (i) memory requests may be issued by co-executing applications at random times, (ii) it is difficult to determine apriori which applications will be concurrently executing, and (iii) the type of requests applications will issue. this work proposes a method to derive upper bounds on the increase in execution time of applications executing on such PCM-based multicores. It considers the contention on the shared memory and focuses on dealing with the asymmetric read and write latencies of PCM-based memories, while taking into account the specific policy applied to schedule requests by the memory controller.

Advancements in autonomous driving technologies leverage real-time computing and embedded systems to enable vehicles to make quick decisions based on dynamic road conditions. these increasingly complex systems face rising computational demands. this study introduces a preliminary approach to parallelizing autonomous driving applications using a high-performance many-core processor. By distributing tasks across multiple cores, the approach enhances concurrent execution, reduces conflicts, and minimizes resource contention, improving the efficiency and performance of autonomous driving systems.

Many embedded real-time applications are typically time-triggered and preemptive schedulers are used to execute tasks of such applications. Orthogonally, composable partitioned embedded platforms use preemptive time-division multiplexing mechanism to isolate applications. Existing composable systems that support two-level scheduling are restricted to cooperative intra-application schedulers, and thus cannot execute the time-triggered applications. In this work, we introduce a framework that allows concurrent, composable execution of such applications on temporally-partitioned systems. the framework is composed of an execution platform and a method for timing analysis of applications running on the platform. the platform realizes a software-based timed-interrupt virtualization technique on an existing composable system. Multiple time-triggered applications may run concurrently using different intra-application preemptive scheduling policies, e.g., fixed-priority and rate-monotonic. the analysis method formalizes the available processing time for executing each application on a processor in order to enable schedulability tests for different policies. Finally, these concepts are demonstrated by executing a number of applications, first on an FPGA prototype and second on a Matlab simulation of the platform. the results indicate a composable and concurrent execution of multiple time-triggered applications using our proposed framework. Furthermore, the implementation of the technique has low cost in terms of memory footprint and execution overhead.

Mixed-criticality (MC) scheduling has been proposed for embedded real-time systems to alleviate the dilemma between runtime resource utilization and worst-case temporal guarantees for critical functions. the approach of dropping all low-criticality tasks upon a mode switch has been criticized for potentially over-degraded performance. In this paper, we focus on the graceful degradation for MC scheduling by providing bounded lateness for certain low-critical tasks. We define MCQOS-schedulability that massages the required bounded lateness into the definition of conventional MC-schedulability. A virtual deadline based scheduler (EDF-VDS) is proposed with utilization-based MCQOS-schedulability test and and closed-form lateness bounds.

In designing realtime software, system designers need to find out the time budget to allocate to each action of realtime tasks so that the tasks can meet their deadlines. Our solution to this problem involves representing the execution time of the actions as parameters, then analyzing the collaborative behavior of those realtime tasks. this paper proposes parametric timed models of realtime tasks whose executions are controlled by a scheduler. We develop an algorithm to synthesize a coherent model which represents the possible behavior from a set of realtime tasks by exhaustively searching their reachable states. A set of linear inequalities are then derived on the fly from the synthesized model as the condition of parameters for schedulability. By solving the inequalities using a constraint solver, we can obtain desirable values of the parameters. In addition, we have implemented the algorithm in a tool and conducted some experiments to show the effectiveness of our approach.

Many embedded control systems are implemented on execution platforms with several computation nodes and communication components. Distributed embedded control systems typically comprise multiple control loops that share the available computation and communication resources of the platform. It is well known that such resource sharing leads to complex delay characteristics that degrade the control quality if not properly taken into account at design time. Scheduling in computation nodes and communication infrastructure, as well as execution periods of the controllers impact the delay characteristics and, consequently, the control quality. In addition, mapping of tasks on computation nodes affect both scheduling of tasks and messages, and the assignment of periods of the control applications. therefore, control synthesis must be considered during mapping, scheduling, and period assignment in order to achieve high control quality. this paper presents a control-quality optimization approach for integrated mapping, scheduling, period selection, and control synthesis for distributed embedded control systems.

Designers of embedded real-time systems derive, in general, their time parameters such as activation periods from those of sensors or actuators. By designers, we mean the team in charge of conceiving embedded real-time systems. this team includes Control theory designers and Computer Science designers. Within this paper we present the point of view of Computer Science designers, while the periods proposed by Control theory designers are supposed robust with respect to the physical behavior of the system. the execution times are, then, estimated by studying statically the programs structure or dynamically the programs execution. In some cases, both activation periods and execution times depend on a sensor information. For instance, they depend on the angular speed of wheels within an automotive embedded real-time system and such systems follow a rate-dependent model. Elastic tasks is another model, where one may consider execution time variation depending on the selected period. Within this paper, we are interested in describing statistically the relationship between activation periods and execution times of programs. More precisely, we study the impact of the period variation on the distributions of the execution times. To illustrate our preliminary results, we consider, as case study, the set of programs executing the autopilot of an open-source PX4 drone.

Recently there has been a lot of interest in coexisting of multiple independently-developed real-time applications on a shared open platform. On the other hand, emerging of multi-core platforms and the performance and possibilities they offer has attracted a lot of attention in multiprocessor real-time analysis, protocols and techniques. Co-executing independently-developedreal-time applications on a shared multiprocessor system, where each application executes on a dedicated sub set of processors, requires to overcome the problem of handling mutually exclusive shared resources among those applications. To handle resource sharing, it is important to determine the Resource Hold time (RHT), i.e., the maximum duration of time that an application locks a shared resource. In this paper, we study resource hold times under multiprocessor static-priority global scheduling. We present how to compute RHT's for each resource in an application. We also show how to decrease the RHT's without compromising the schedulability of the application. We show that decreasing all RHT's for all shared resources is a multiobjective optimization problem and there can exist multiple Pareto-optimal solutions.

We present Carousel-EDF, a new hierarchical scheduling algorithm for a system of identical processors, and its overhead-aware schedulability analysis based on demand bound functions. Carousel-EDF is an offshoot of NPS-F and preserves its utilization bounds, which are the highest among algorithms not based on a single dispatching queue and that have few preemptions. Furthermore, with respect to NPS-F, Carousel-EDF reduces by up to 50% the number of context switches and of preemptions caused by the high-level scheduler itself. the schedulability analysis we present in this paper is grounded on a prototype implementation of Carousel-EDF that uses a new implementation technique for the release of periodic tasks. this technique reduces the pessimism of the schedulability analysis presented and can be applied, with similar benefits, to other scheduling algorithms such as NPS-F.
