As computers and Internet technology advance, many time-dependent applications, such as mobile navigation and online gaming, are emerging. time-dependent applications are associated with a pair of time-dependent functions representing accrued gain at the time when tasks complete or accrued cost when tasks fail to complete, respectively. For systems that provide time-dependent services, the optimization goal is to maximize the system profit when both potential gain and potential cost exist for each request the system accepts. this paper presents two scheduling algorithms, prediction-based highest gain density first (PHGDF) and iterative PHGDF (iPHGDF) scheduling algorithms with the objective to maximize the system's total accrued profit. Simulation results provide clear evidence that, with respect to the system total accrued profit, the proposed PHGDF and iPHGDF algorithms have advantages over other commonly used scheduling algorithm, such as the Earliest Deadline First (EDF), the Generic Utility Scheduling (GUS) and the Profit and Penalty aware scheduling (PP-aware) algorithms.

In order to enhance OS security, most of people use security patches to fix the vulnerabilities of the OS. However, the security patches may also incur vulnerabilities. these vulnerabilities are generated since most OSes has a lot of functionalities and their functionalities are very complex to manage the entire source code manually. Moreover, in order to use the security patch, rebooting the system is required. Some of systems such as enterprise servers and embedded systems cannot accept the rebooting. therefore, we propose an external integrity checking system to enhance the OS security. the external integrity checking system and a target OS run on a hypervisor simultaneously, therefore, their operations do not affect each other. In addition, the integrity checking system is generated automatically with invariants. therefore, the possibility of inserting vulnerabilities into the system is as small as possible, and the system can cover a lot of vulnerabilities.

the processing graph method (PGM) is a widely used framework for modeling applications with producer/consumer precedence constraints. PGM was originally developed by the U.S. Navy to model signal-processing applications where data communications exist among connected tasks. Prior work has shown how to schedule PGM-specified systems on uniprocessors and globally-scheduled multiprocessors. In this paper, this work is extended to enable such systems to be supported in a distributed collection of multicore machines. In such a context, pure global and partitioned scheduling approaches are problematic. Moreover, data communication costs must be considered. In this paper, a clustered scheduling algorithm is proposed for soft real-time PGM-specified distributed task systems for which bounded deadline tardiness is acceptable. this algorithm is effective in reducing data communication costs with little utilization loss. this is shown both analytically and via experiments conducted to compare it with an optimal integer linear programming solution.

the Web has become pervasive. this has led to a paradigm shift, where applications live on the Web as services, where they can be accessed using terminals of different types, such as regular computers, mobile devices, game consoles, and so on. the ability to dynamically combine data, code and other content from numerous web sites all over the world, and the ability to instantly publish services worldwide has opened up entirely new possibilities for software development. Such applications, referred to as mashups, are content aggregates that leverage the power of the Web to support instant, worldwide sharing of content. Unfortunately, for various reasons, the browser that is commonly used as the run-time environment of mashups is inadequate for hosting complex applications, in particular when considering embedded devices and subsystems that are not readily available in the web. In this paper, we introduce a runtime environment, intended for embedded devices, that is able to host mashups that combine data from the web and device specific peripherals, thus enabling context-aware mashups. As an example, we describe a mashup that combines map data from an existing map service and GPS data available from an external system.

In ubiquitous computing, systems evolve surrounded by a heterogeneous smart-devices and software services, offering functionalities that enable new applications to be created. In such system, we need to consider the unpredictability of software infrastructure changes. To tackle the issue of the dynamic variation of the software infrastructure, compositional adaptation is now often used. the problem is that adaptation entities are independent-written. In such case, they may interfere when they are composed. In this paper, we propose a formal approach that allows composing applications at run time and managing these interferences. the formal model of the system and adaptations are defined in term of graphs. In particular, we demonstrate the symmetry property of our composition process.

Simultaneous multithreading (SMT) has the ability to dramatically improve real-time scheduling, but existing methods are cumbersome, frequently need specialized hardware, or are limited to producing table-based schedules. Here, an easily portable method for quickly applying SMT to priority-driven hard real-time systems is given. Using a combination of integer linear programming and heuristic binpacking, a partitioned earliest-deadline-first (EDF) scheduler that takes advantage of SMT is produced. the integer linear programming and partitioning are done offline, but generally require only a few seconds, even given over a hundred tasks. A large-scale schedulability study is conducted, showing that compared to partitioned scheduling without SMT, the schedulable utilization for the considered hardware platform is nearly doubled in the best cases.

thermal management is a major design challenge in three-dimensional dynamically partially reconfigurable systems. Unlike three-dimensional integrated circuits, thermal management is more difficult in three-dimensional dynamically partially reconfigurable systems because of the extra heat generated by task reconfiguration. this study proposes an on-line thermal-aware task management scheme to reclaim the run-time thermal slack from lowpower tasks, and uses a configurable thermal threshold to achieve a trade-off between the reconfiguration overhead and thermal distribution. the proposed scheme maximizes the tolerable task execution power to better utilize the system and provides a quality of service guarantee under the thermal constraint. this study also evaluates the capability of the proposed methodology using a series of experiments, presenting encouraging results.

In real-time systems research, validations are usually performed by executing synthetically generated tasks through programmatic implementations of derived algorithms or theoretical results. For every new result, real-time researchers have to develop systems, several times from scratch, for generating task sets as well as implementing their derivations. Another issue arises when the results are submitted for peer review. Reviewers only have access to results in the form of numerical values given in the paper, and have no easy way of validating the results themselves. To solve these two issues, we present a new extensible system for real-time task generation and simulation. Using modern software engineering principles of object and reflection-oriented programming, we show how real-time analysis can be partitioned into sub-systems, where each such subsystem can be implemented as a run-time 'plug-in' which can be independently developed by different research groups. this technique is intended to save real-time researchers the significant amount of time spent in result validation, as well as allow reviewers easy access to the experimental setup of the submitted paper for a more efficient review process.

A person-following robot must understand the psychological effects of a user to maintain a good relationship with them. In this paper, we define factors that affect the user's psychological states by factor analysis. Also, we present an overall score of the following effect for various following positions based on user evaluation. the result shows that a higher score is obtained if the robot follows close and is beside the person than that if the robot follows the person from a distance.
