this paper presents an hierarchical end-to-end analysis technique that decomposes the very complex heterogeneous multi-resource scheduling problem into a set of single resource scheduling problems with well defined interactions. We define heterogeneity both in resource types, e.g., CPU, and in scheduling policies, e.g., rate-monotonic scheduling. this analysis technique is one phase of our systems integration framework for designing large-scale, heterogeneous, distributed real-time systems whose timing properties can be strictly controlled and analyzed. this approach, denoted the Distributed Pipelining Framework, exploits the natural pipelining execution pattern found in a large number of continuous (periodic) applications executing over heterogenous resources. A teleconference application is used in this paper to show the utility of the approach.

Homomorphic encryption (HE) is an important cryptographic technique that allows one to directly perform computation on encrypted data without decryption. In HE-based applications using digital images, a user often encrypts a private image captured on a local device. this image can contain noise that negatively affects the results of HE-based applications. To solve this problem, this paper proposes an HE-based adaptive image filter. For small-sized encrypted input data, pixels that have no dependency when sliding a window are encoded into the same ciphertext. For division in the adaptive filter, which is not supported by conventional HE schemes, a numerical approach is adopted. To the best of the authors' knowledge, this paper is the first work that applies division over encrypted data to an image processing algorithm. We implemented the proposed HE-based adaptive filter as a proof-of-concept client-server model. the proposed design can address important privacy issues in image processing applications in internet-of-things and cyberphysical systems, where many devices are connected through a vulnerable network.

this paper presents a new code compression method where we use different dictionaries, all of them are based in traditional Huffman algorithm. Our method reduces code size by up to 34.5% ( including all extra costs) and presents an improvement of almost 7% over the traditional Huffman method. We performed simulations using SimpleScalar and analyzes using the applications from benchmark MiBench and use the embedded processor ARM.

Effectively handling precedence constraints and resource synchronization is a challenging problem in the era of multiprocessor systems even with massively parallel computation power. One common approach is to apply list scheduling to a given task graph with precedence constraints. However, in some application scenarios, such as the OpenMP task model and multiprocessor partitioned scheduling for resource synchronization using binary semaphores, several operations can be forced to be tied to the same processor, which invalidates the list scheduling. this paper studies a special case of this challenging scheduling problem, where a task comprised of (at most) three subtasks is executed sequentially on the same processor and the second subtasks of the tasks may have sequential dependencies, e.g., due to synchronization. We demonstrate the limits of existing algorithms and provide effective heuristics considering preemptive execution. the evaluation results show a significant improvement, compared to the existing multiprocessor partitioned scheduling strategies.

Multi-core processors are becoming the dominant choice due to energy and thermal considerations, which also applies to embedded and real-time systems. While fixed-priority scheduling with task-splitting in real-time systems are widely applied, current approaches have not taken into consideration energy-aware aspects such as dynamic voltage/frequency scheduling (DVS). In this paper, we propose two strategies to apply DVS to fixed-priority scheduling algorithms with task-splitting for periodic real-time tasks on multi-core processors. We first propose a strategy that does traditional DVS for each processor after scheduling (post-DVS), which ensures all tasks meet the timing requirements on synchronization. We then propose a new strategy, which determines the frequency of each task before scheduling (pre-DVS) according to the total utilization of task-set and number of cores available, so that the system could take full advantage of all the cores. the combination of frequency pre-allocation and task-splitting makes it possible to maximize energy savings with DVS. We perform a series of simulations to compare the performance of each algorithm with two state-of-the-art scheduling algorithms with task-splitting. Simulation results show that the pre-DVS algorithm we proposed has performed satisfactorily on both schedulability and energy consumption in comparison to the previous approaches.

this paper tackles the scheduling of loop-intensive applications modeled by synchronous dataflow graphs (SDFGs) on heterogeneous multiprocessor architectures under resource and communication constraints. Scheduling an application graph on multiprocessor architectures under resource constraints is a well-known NP-hard problem widely addressed in the previous decades with the goal of optimizing different performance metrics such as latency, memory allocations, energy consumption, throughput, etc. In this paper, we focus on the study of cyclic scheduling strategies and specifically the software pipelined schedules of SDFGs under the resource and communication constraints of heterogeneous multiprocessor architectures and we made two major contributions. the first contribution is an integer linear programming (ILP) model for the exact resolution of the scheduling problem and the second contribution is a time-efficient heuristic that generates scheduling solutions close to the optimal solutions generated with our ILP model.

Techniques for hardware virtualization have been successfully used to provide hardware-independent services and increase isolation between applications in the desktop domain. However, these characteristics make hardware virtualization also interesting for other domains like those involving control tasks. Since these techniques were initially not conceived for this kind of environments where, in particular, timing constraints must be guaranteed, it is necessary to analyze their behavior and investigate the viability of possible solutions based on them. In this paper, we are concerned with using VMs (Virtual Machines) to provide real-time services in the context of automotive control applications. For this purpose, we make use of the Xen hypervisor to design a real-time control loop on the top of a virtualization layer. We first analyze a typical Xen configuration and identify problems that arise when it is used for real-time applications. We show that the worst-case performance of Xen's standard SEDF scheduler (Simple Earliest Deadline First) can be improved by incorporating some minimal modifications. In addition, in order to reduce latency and jitter in a real-time control loop, we propose a new scheduler for the Xen hypervisor that uses the concept of a real-time VM. real-time VMs are then scheduled before any other VM and under a fixed-priority policy. the proposed VM-based solution is shown to guarantee timing constraints typically encountered in automotive control applications. We further illustrate this through an extensive set of experiments.

this paper presents a novel online scheduling algorithm for scheduling real-time adaptive systems in which tasks may have distinct resource requirements for each of the systems' operating modes. Apart from prior work that considers only step-wise adaptation of tasks' resource utilization during mode transition, the proposed algorithm (named EAGLE-T) enables tasks to adapt their resource utilization progressively from one mode to another in a timely manner without causing any deadline miss. the upper bound of the delay and the drift between resource utilization achieved by EAGLE-T and the ideal scheduler during mode transition are provided. Performance evaluation shows that the progressive adaptation of EAGLE-T offers improved performance over a step-wise approach (average maximal-utilization drift and mode-transition delay are reduced by up to 68.75% and 32.16%, respectively). As the probability of a mode change or the number of tasks vary, empirical results show that the resource utilization achieved by tasks scheduled using EAGLE-T is within 56% to 90% of the desired utilization (compared to 11%-81% when the step-wise scheme is used).

As virtualization becomes increasingly popular, more critical applications that require real-time performance guarantees are deployed on virtualized systems. In such systems, the Hierarchical real-time Scheduling (HiRTS) framework divides the scheduling problem into task-level scheduling and resource-level scheduling. Specifically, resource-level scheduling divides a physical resource into multiple resource partitions while task-level scheduling schedules the tasks on each resource partition. Accordingly, the Regularity-based Resource Partitioning (RRP) model offers efficient resource-level scheduling. Despite the availability of adequate resource-level tools, the task-level scheduling based on the RRP model still has a scope for improvements. To extend the applicability of the RRP model under a variety of task workload environments, this paper offers: (1) a more practical schedulability test for independent tasks whose key parameters, i.e., Worst-Case Execution time (WCET), period and deadline, are non-integral multiples of a time slice;(2) a tuned Earliest Deadline First (EDF) scheduling approach and a corresponding schedulability test for intra-VM dependent tasks;(3) schedulability tests for self-suspended tasks based on Fixed-Relative-Deadline (FRD) scheduling strategies.

the current trend in embedded systems towards integrating multiple functionalities with different degrees of criticalities on a shared computing platform. the concept of mixed-criticality system has been presented and is becoming common in embedded systems. the scheduling problem for mixed-criticality systems has become a hot research topic. A algorithm called EDF-VD was proposed for mixed-criticality systems, it can make a better performance guarantee. In order to increase the number of schedulable tasks, an improved mixed-criticality scheduling algorithm based on EDF-VD is proposed. In the proposed algorithm, a probabilistic parameter is introduced to represent the probability that the execution time of high criticality task exceeding the worst execution time at its low criticality mode, and sufficient conditions that the mixed-criticality task instances can be scheduled are derived. Simulation results show that the number of schedulable tasks in the proposed algorithm is more than the EDF-VD algorithm.
