In modern safety-critical embedded systems (e.g., automotive/avionic systems), it is increasingly important to integrate components with different critical levels into one physical platform considering space, weight, and heat generation. the most common case is a mixed-time-sensitive system (MTSS), which is usually composed of an RTOS (real-time Operating System) and a GPOS (General-Purpose Operating System). In MTSS, cache sharing between RTOS and GPOS often causes inter-task interference, making WCET estimation overly pessimistic due to the increase of cache miss rate and task execution time variances. the existing cache management solutions, such as dynamic and static schemes, are challenging to be applied to MTSS. In this paper, we propose a novel practical method, termed cacheSPM, to eliminate the cache interference in MTSS. CacheSPM statically partitions cache resources during the compilation phase, effectively preventing the GPOS from influencing the cache resources belonged to the RTOS. Compared to the traditional partition schemes, cacheSPM has no intervention of memory manager and additional runtime overhead. Evaluation reveals that this method improves the memory utilization and reduces overhead in a balanced way, with the memory access latency reduced by 80.7% on average, and guarantees the real-time capability of RTOS without negatively affecting the performance of GPOS.

Edge Artificial Intelligence based traffic tracking and detecting sensors are very essential for smart cities, especially for smart transportation applications. these sensors are not only used to collect large amount of traffic data, but also reduce the bandwidth of the communication network to transfer and reduce the workload to process huge data on the cloud or server side. It is very necessary to process, store, and extract useful data at the edge of the Internet before transferring the data to central server which can be called Artificial Intelligence on the Edge. this research aims at studying, implementing and evaluating machine learning models which are suitable for running on limited computing embedded computers. Computer vision and real-time object detection techniques are applied on Nvidia Jetson Nano embedded Computer to build an Edge-AI based traffic tracking and detecting sensor, two popular models (MobileNet-SSD and YOLOv4) have been studied and implemented to compare the performance on vehicle counting and license plate detection applications. there has been a new propose method to apply TensorRT engine for these two models to increase the processing speed. the data source used in this project is manually collected at actual traffic routes and parking lots in Vietnam with more than 11700 images of Vietnamese vehicles and license plates then trained on Google Colab. the performance evaluation results show that both models have high accuracy in real-time license plate detection and vehicle counting application when implemented on the Edge computer Jetson Nano with the mAPs of both model are higher than 90 percent during training session. the MobileNet-SSD model has good speed (40 FPS) which is very much faster than some previous works (25 FPS), this model is suitable for real-time applications. the YOLOv4 model, after being optimized by TensorRT engine, has a better speed (7.2 FPS) than the original version (1.7 FPS), although the YOLOv4 model has low s

Monitoring systems are essential to understand and control the behaviour of systems and networks. Cyber-physical systems (CPS) are particularly delicate under that perspective since they involve real-time constraints and physical phenomena that are not usually considered in common IT solutions. therefore, there is a need for publicly available monitoring tools able to contemplate these aspects. In this poster/demo, we present our initiative, called CPS-MT, towards a versatile, real-time CPS monitoring tool, with a particular focus on security research. We first present its architecture and main components, followed by a MiniCPS-based case study. We also describe a performance analysis and preliminary results. During the demo, we will discuss CPS-MT's capabilities and limitations for security applications.

Solid-state disks use flash memory as their storage medium, and adopt a firmware layer that makes data mapping and wear leveling transparent to the hosts. Even though solid-state disks emulate a collection of logical sectors, the I/O delays of accessing all these logical sectors are not uniform because the management of flash memory is subject to many physical constraints of flash memory. this work proposes a collection of black-box tests can detect the geometry inside of a solid-state disk. the host system software can arrange data in the logical disk space according to the detected geometry information to match the host write pattern with the device characteristic for reducing the flash management overhead in solid-state disks.

the MapReduce programming model has introduced simple interfaces to a large class of applications. Its easy-to-use APIs and autonomic parallelization are attracting attentions from scientific community. However, current MapReduce-style scientific frameworks focus more on the most popular MapReduce applications that can be easily partitioned and involve little communication across map or reduce tasks. they typically lack adequate support for more complex applications that involve iterative communication and dynamic domain partitioning. In this paper, via abstraction of numerical domains of many applications, we present a domain-based MapReduce programming model for iterative and dynamic scientific applications. Using real-world applications, we introduce a general methodology to adapt APIs of legacy scientific codes into the more developer-friendly MapReduce-like programming model.

Recently, the negative effect of the popular power management technique Dynamic Voltage and Frequency Scaling (DVFS) on the system reliability has been identified. As a result, various reliability-aware power management (RAPM) schemes have been studied for uniprocessor real-time systems. In this paper, we investigate global-scheduling-based RAPM (G-RAPM) schemes for a set of frame-based real-time tasks running on a homogeneous multiprocessor system. An important dimension of the problem is how to select the appropriate subset of tasks for energy and reliability management (i.e., schedule a recovery for each selected task and scale down their executions). We show that making this decision optimally (i.e., the static G-RAPM problem) is NP-hard. then we propose two efficient G-RAPM heuristics, which rely on local and global task selections, respectively. Moreover, to reclaim dynamic slack generated at runtime, we extend the slack sharing based global dynamic power management scheme to the reliability-aware settings. the proposed schemes are evaluated through extensive simulations. the results show that our static G-RAPM heuristics can preserve system reliability while achieving significant energy savings (within 3% of an upper bound for most cases). Moreover, G-RAPM with global task selection provides better opportunities for dynamic slack reclamation and up to 15% more energy savings can be obtained at runtime compared to that of local task selection.

the enhanced computing platforms, which are on edge networks and used for embedding computing services, enable the processing of sensing data on edge and sharing the data with the peers of interest. Smart factories and autonomous vehicles are two typical examples. However, existing real-time communication protocols have limits on cross-network domains and complex data structures. To resolve the problems above, this work investigates a new distributed data exchange framework, Zenoh. As a unified and transparent middle-ware for devices over heterogeneous networks, Zenoh enables peers in different network domains to exchange messages in real-time by pub/sub data exchange pattern. Furthermore, it provides high flexibility and scalability by configurable end-to-end and hop-to-hop reliability and congestion control QoS profiles. this work proposes a bounded-time decision algorithm by Reliable Broadcast and CRDT based on Zenoh. this work also benchmarks the protocol's capability over cross-domain networks and investigate the overhead of our algorithms implemented on Zenoh. the throughput and latency performance shows the potential for practical communication between robots in factories or autonomous vehicles on roads.

Stack sharing between tasks may significantly reduce the amount of memory required in resource-constrained real-time embedded systems. Existing work on stack sharing mainly focused on stack sharing between tasks that neither leave any data on the stack from one instance to another nor suspend themselves, i.e. tasks with a so-called single-shot execution. In this paper, we consider stack memory requirements of AUTOSAR/OSEK-compliant scheduling policies for a mixed task set, consisting of so-called basic and extended tasks. Unlike basic tasks, that have a single-shot execution, extended tasks are allowed to leave data on the stack from one instance to another and to suspend themselves. We prove that minimizing the shared stack requirement for such a mixed task set is an NP-hard problem. We subsequently provide an heuristic-based algorithm to minimize stack usage of a mixed task set, and evaluate the algorithm through a case study of an implementation of an unmanned aerial vehicle.

the growth of computing continues to place power demands on an ever-stressed energy grid. embedded systems are a part of that demand. Focusing on the architecture of the System-On-Chip (SoC) is an area of interest for power optimization. Intellectual Property (IP) blocks that provide support functionality for SoC designs are often licensed from vendors who provide little or no visibility into their inner workings, requiring reliance on vendor-supplied metrics. this work proposes TurbOS, a small footprint open-source operating system (OS) for reducing required resources within IP blocks. TurbOS utilizes the Turbo9 microprocessor, and is just 20% the size of the popular FreeRTOS operating system, while providing the same functionality. For certain applications, the number of IP blocks can be reduced without loss of functionality.

In some real-time application systems, there are only a few distinct kinds of tasks, each of which may be instantiated several times during runtime. the scheduling of such sporadic task systems is considered here upon both a single processor, and on multiprocessor platforms under the partitioned paradigm of multiprocessor scheduling. Algorithms that have run-time polynomial in the number of tasks in the system are presented and proved correct.
