Security and energy are two main concerns for embedded systems, especially in battery-powered security-critical systems. In this paper, we make efforts to identify energy-related characteristics of common security algorithms for data-sensitive embedded real-time systems. Different to traditional researches, this paper focuses on the influences of size of protected data on energy-related factors. We present a multi-dimensional analysis framework that reveals potential features of energy consumption from the angles of power, speed, and unit energy cost. the energy features of most popular cryptographic algorithms including symmetric, asymmetric, and hash algorithms are well studied. In addition, some mathematical models are also built to help explain and investigate these features. All the analysis is based on empirical data measured from an ARM9 embedded platform which runs security-critical tasks under mu C/OSII. We believe this paper could provide some useful information to help the design of security-critical applications in embedded real-time systems.

In the safety-critical domain, such as avionics, there is a strong demand for increased guaranteed performance and lower development costs. this demand is satisfied by utilizing commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) Multiprocessor System-on-Chips (MPSoC). MPSoCs contain multi-core processors that pose a significant challenge for deployment in safety-critical systems, since the Worst-Case Execution time (WCET) of a process may be influenced by other processes due to cross-core interference. In this paper, we introduce a novel non-intrusive IP Core for Cache and Memory thrashing (referred to as IP-CMT) that helps us estimate the cross-core interference. the IP-CMT core does not require any software changes to be made to the system under test, resulting in lower development costs. Furthermore, our evaluation with a real-world aerospace-grade Flight Management System indicates that the proposed IP-CMT core is capable of introducing the same degree of cross-core interference as present-day SW methods while not being overly conservative and having minimal overhead. thus, system performance is spared.

this paper presents Virtual Lock, a novel smartphone application for personal surveillance using camera sensor networks. the proposed system consists of a smartphone and a set of easily deployable wireless camera sensor motes and enables an inexpensive solution to continuous monitoring of one's surroundings. Once camera sensor motes are deployed, a user can define multiple regions of interest for each camera's view using a smartphone application. then the camera sensor network monitors for any changes in the defined regions of interest. If an event is detected, e.g., when a valuable good inside a region of interest is missing, the Virtual Lock system notifies the user via her smartphone. this paper describes the Virtual Lock system and demonstrates the potential of camera sensor networks.

In the recent years, multicore processor designs have become increasingly popular for embedded applications, but diversified inter-core communication mechanisms have led to the difficulties in software development, integration and migration. A unified, portable, and efficient inter-core communication mechanism would have helped reduce these difficulties significantly, but such a solution did not exist today. We proposed a scheme called MSG, which provides users with a set of essential message-passing programming interfaces adopted from MPI and MCAPI, including blocking and non-blocking point-to-point communications, one-sided communications, and collective operations. We experimented and evaluated our design methodology with the case study on the IBM CELL, a popular heterogeneous multicore platform. On the CELL platform, our MSG library fitted in the 256KB local memory on each individual processor core and outperformed two existing communication libraries, DaCS and CIVIL. With a systematic approach, we showed how optimization could be done on the CELL platform to improve the performance of the MSG library. Hopefully, our experiences help the design and development of communication libraries for existing and future multicore platforms and embedded applications.

Safe and efficient traffic control remains a challenging task with the continued increase in the number of vehicles, especially in urban areas. this paper focuses on traffic control at intersections, since urban roads with closely spaced intersections are often prone to queue spillbacks, which disrupt traffic flows across the entire network and increase congestion. While various intelligent traffic control solutions exist for autonomous systems, they are not applicable to or ineffective against human-operated vehicles or mixed traffic. On the other hand, existing approaches to manage intersections with human-operated vehicles cannot adequately adjust to dynamic traffic conditions. this paper presents a technology-agnostic adaptive real-time server based approach to dynamically determine signal timings at an intersection based on changing traffic conditions and queue lengths (i.e., wait times) to minimize, if not eliminate, spillbacks without unnecessarily increasing delays associated with intersection crossings. this work is also the first to provide worst-case bounds on wait time making our approach more dependable and predictable. the proposed approach was validated in simulations and on a realistic hardware testbed with robots mimicking human driving behaviors. Compared to the pre-timed traffic control and an adaptive scheduling based traffic control, our algorithm is able to avoid spillbacks under highly dynamic traffic conditions and improve the average crossing delay in most cases by 10-50%.

With the development of information technology, real-time data stream processing(RTDSP) has become a popular research topic. the first step of RTDSP is collecting data, requiring a data collector to receive data from the source and send them to the sink. Apache Flume, a distributed and reliable framework, used for this purpose, has some limitations and drawbacks on load balancing and storage. In this paper, we aim to improve performance and availability for collecting unstable real-time big data stream. So we propose a new load balancing strategy based on the free memory size and a storage strategy of integration memory channel with the multi-file channel to reduce the overhead of disk and network. Finally, the experimental results show that the availability and performance are improved under the condition of a poor network, high availability requirements, intense competition in memory resources and large data size. Specifically, the availability is higher than 99.999%, and the performance can be improved by 10%-50% under different conditions.

time-triggered real-time systems achieve deterministic behaviour, making them suitable for safety-critical environments. However, this determinism also allows attackers to finetune attacks after studying the system behaviour through side channels, targeting safety-critical victim tasks. Assuming fault independence, replication tolerates both random and malicious faults of up to f replicas. Yet, directed attacks violate the fault independence assumption. this violation possibly gives attackers the edge to compromise more than f replicas simultaneously, in particular if they can mount the attack from already compromised components. In this paper, we sketch mitigation strategies for time-triggered systems with task replication to withstand directed timing attacks and show preliminary results on their effectiveness and practicality.

System execution traces are useful artifacts for capturing distributed system behavior and validating quality-of-service (QoS) properties, such as end-to-end response time, throughput, and scalability. Although system execution traces assist in validating QoS properties, system execution traces are very dense. this is because system execution traces capture a system's complete behavior and execution in its target environment, which can consist of many components deployed across many hosts that execute for long periods of time. It therefore can be hard for distributed system testers to effectively analyze different views of QoS properties using system execution traces and/or pinpoint performance bottlenecks that need to be resolved. this paper provides two contributions on validating distributed system QoS properties. First, this paper presents Aspects for System Execution Traces (AsSET), which is a join point model for applying aspects to system execution traces and enabling context-based analysis of system execution traces. Secondly, it shows how applying AsSET to a representative enterprise distributed system can improve QoS analytical capabilities for distributed system testers. the tools and techniques discussed in this paper have been realized in an open-source system execution modeling tool named CUTS, which is currently used on several industry-related projects.

Recently, several studies have considered applications with a single time constraint (i.e., deadline) running on cloud systems. In this work, to effectively support user requests with flexible timing constraints (e.g., users may prefer expedited services and are willing to pay extra for getting their job processed at earlier times), we consider applications with multiple deadlines for being processed in resource-constrained cloud systems and investigate corresponding virtual machine (VM) provisioning schemes. Specifically, by considering the multiple deadline-bid pairs of user requests, we propose a Slope-based time-Sensitive Resource Factor with Dominant Resource being considered to prioritize such requests. In addition, we study the mapping schemes that allocate multiple VMs of a user request to only one or multiple computing nodes, which are denoted as Bundled and Distributed mappings, respectively. the evaluation results show that, compared to the single deadline schemes, the proposed VM provisioning schemes that consider multiple deadlines and distributed mapping can significantly improve the achieved system benefit and resource utilization.

Many embedded systems have complex timing constraints and, at the same time, have flexibility requirements which prohibit offline planning of the entire system. To support a mixture of time-triggered and event-triggered tasks, some industrial systems deploy an RTOS with a table-driven dispatcher complemented with a preemptive scheduler to allocate the free time slots to event-driven tasks. Rather than allocating dedicated time-slots to time-triggered tasks, in this work we provide RTOS support to dynamically re-allocate time-slots of time-triggered tasks within pre-computed time ranges to maximize the availability of the processing capacity for event-triggered tasks. Although the concept - called slotshifting - is not new, we are the first to extend a commercial RTOS with such support. In addition, we extend slotshifting with a run-time mechanism to reclaim resources of time-triggered tasks when their reserved capacities are unused. this mechanism eliminates over-provisioning of capacities to tasks that have been converted into periodic tasks to resolve interdependencies during off-line synthesis, but by nature are event-triggered. this allows, for example, for a resource-efficient implementation of a polling task. After implementing our unique RTOS extensions, we investigate the run-time overheads for the corresponding scheduling mechanisms. Measurements show that the increase in terms of absolute run-time overhead is minor compared to an off-the-shelf micro-kernel with a fixed-priority scheduler(1).
