Recent technological advances have fostered the development of complex industrial cyber-physical systems with communication delay requirements. the consequences of delay requirement violation in such systems may become increasingly severe. In this paper, we propose a contract-based fault-resilient methodology which aims at managing the communication delays of network flows in industries. With this objective, we present a lightweight mechanism to estimate end-to-end communication delays in the network where the clocks of the switches are not synchronized. the mechanism aims at providing high level of accuracy with little communication overhead. We then propose a contract-based framework using software-defined networking (SDN) where the components are associated with delay contracts and a resilience manager. the proposed resilience management framework contains: (1) contracts which state requirements about components' behaviors, (2) observers which are responsible to detect contract failure (fault), (3) monitors to detect events such as run-time changes in the delay requirements and link failure, (4) control logic to take suitable decisions based on the type of the fault, (5) resilience manager to decide response strategies containing the best course of action as per the control logic decision. Finally, we present a delay-aware path finding algorithm which is used to route/reroute the network flows to provide resilience in the case of faults and, to adapt to the changes in the network state. Performance of the proposed framework is evaluated with the Ryu SDN controller and Mininet network emulator.

Emerging technologies such as Internet of things (IoT) can provide significant potential in Precision Agriculture enabling the acquisition of real-time environmental data. IoT devices like Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) equipped with cameras, sensors, and GPS receivers can deliver a variety of IoT services and applications related to fields management, by capturing images from great heights. However, there are many issues to be resolved before the effective use of UAVs in the agriculture domain, including the data collection and processing methods. there is still no standardized workflow and processes for most UAV-based applications for Precision Agriculture. In this paper we summarize the data acquisition methods and technologies to acquire images in UAV-based Precision Agriculture and appoint the benefits and drawbacks of each one. We also review popular data analysis methods of remotely sensed imagery and discuss the outcomes of each method and its potential application in the farming operations.

the IoT ecosystem is evolving quickly, developing several applications in different sectors. the majority of these applications use centralized infrastructures something that poses several challenges especially related to trust and data security. Recently, blockchain has been introduced as an effective solution to IoT applications trying to provide solutions to these challenges. In this paper, we introduce a new decentralized IoT application using blockchain technology, namely, ParkChain. the ParkChain application operates in a way that no one can delete, revert, hack or question the time a registered vehicle securely entered a parking area. In order to evaluate ParkChain, we have implemented the smart contract on top of Ethereum Blockchain along with a traditional Image Processing / Computer Vision approach for License Plate Recognition, and using a Raspberry Pi we control the access on a parking place. We report on several experiments that assess the performance of ParkChain application.

Analysis of people trajectories is key for implementing effective urban computing applications. Nowadays, social media represent one of the main sources of information concerning human dynamics within urban context, allowing to enhance the comprehension of people behaviour, including human mobility regularities. the paper presents an approach to predict human mobility by exploiting Twitter data. the prediction method is based on a hybrid approach combining frequent pattern mining, trajectory similarity and supervised classification. the trajectory pattern similarity allows to identify the more suitable historic patterns to exploit for the prediction of the user next location. If none of the patterns satisfies the similarity threshold, a set of spatio-temporal features characterizing locations and movements among them are combined into a supervised learning approach based on M5 model trees. the experimental results obtained by using a real-world dataset show that the proposed method is effective in predicting the user's next places achieving a remarkable accuracy and prediction rate.

the Deterministic and Synchronous Multi-Channel Extension (DSME) protocol is a recent amendment to the ieee 802.15.4 standard. It combines contention-based and time-division medium access, offers channel diversity, and is aimed to support IIoT applications with stringent requirements in terms of timeliness and reliability. In this paper, we show how to configure DSME for a given data collection task. this includes the definition of the slot and frame length and the slot and channel schedule. We formulate different scheduling strategies as linear programs minimizing latency and energy. We verify our results through theoretical analysis and simulations and compare them with state-of-the-art scheduling algorithms. the results indicate a reduced delay of up to 80% for deep networks while also increasing reliability. Additionally, the proposed scheduling strategies significantly reduce the required buffer size.

With the ever-increasing development of cloud-based technology for the vehicle networking, FOTA (Firmware Over-the-Air) has been widely exploited in the domain of automotive industry. To satisfy the requirements of efficiency, dependability, security and flexibility for intelligent and connected vehicle systems, we propose a FOTA based mechanism to implement the incremental system upgrade. Aiming at efficiently and reliably upgrading softwares of system and applications, we present the framework, upgrade process, structure of file directories, fault handling method as well as the technical implementation of our proposed mechanism. Based on Linux kernel, the empirical results from real in-vehicle systems validate the efficiency of the system upgrade mechanism on a low-configured hardware platform, where it is difficult for some state-of-the-art embedded operating systems (such as Android) to run.

During the last decade, Ethernet's significance has increased in many embedded systems application areas, such as automotive, avionics and automation. However, guaranteeing the required availability level for such applications on Ethernet is still a hot research topic. In this specific area, we propose in this paper a new redundancy protocol for high availability Ethernet networks, called QoS-Aware Ring Redundancy Protocol (QoS-ARRP). First, the specifications of such a protocol are detailed, including the frame redundancy and filtering management, the auto-configuration mechanisms, as well as the maximum recovery time analysis. Second, the numerical results of the recovery time have shown the impact of the protocol parameters to tune and the trade-off between availability and scalability of the network. Moreover, we have benchmarked the state-of-the-art results on the recovery time against ours. A noticeable enhancement of the maximum recovery time with our proposal, thus of the availability level, has been highlighted.

Wearable strain sensors potentially hold great significance in several areas, such as rehabilitation, research, sports. Conductive textile elements are excellent candidates for the development of wearable devices as human motion capture systems because of their intrinsic properties of lightweight, compliance, flexibility, and stretchability. Herein, the metrological characterization of sensing elements based on a conductive textile intended for joint motion monitoring is presented. the aim of this study is twofold: (i) analyzing the influence of the shape on the metrological properties of conductive textiles, (ii) providing a preliminary assessment of the performance of a custom-made wearable device (i.e., a glove) embedding a conductive textile element to monitor wrist joint movements. the static characterization and the hysteresis analysis were performed on two samples of conductive textile elements, i.e., the zig-zag pattern and the rectangular one. the feasibility assessment of a glove embedding one sensing element for wrist flexion-extension monitoring was performed on a single volunteer. Results showed that the zig-zag patterned conductive element had a resistance change range comparable to the rectangular one (i.e., 100 k Omega - 170 k Omega vs. 40 k Omega - 80 k Omega), higher averaged sensitivity (i.e., -3.96 k Omega center dot%(-1) vs. -2.42 k Omega center dot%(-1)), and a lower hysteresis error, e(H)% (i.e., averaged e(H)% 5.22% vs. 6.83%). Regarding the feasibility assessment of the wearable device, results showed good performance in tracking wrist flexion-extension in real-time. the proposed wearable device embedding a conductive textile element seems to be suitable for wrist motions monitoring with promising applications in contexts as rehabilitation, sports, and clinical research.

A new task scheduling algorithm that schedules mixed task set consisting of real-time and interactive tasks is presented. Our algorithm aims at minimizing the power consumption of the system with the reasonable response time of interactive tasks as well as the deadline guarantees of real-time tasks. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm improves the power consumption by 23% on average.
