Spatial perception and three-dimensional imagination are important characteristics for many construction tasks in civil engineering. In order to support people in these tasks, worldwide research is being carried out on assistance systems based on machine learning and augmented reality. In this paper, we examine the machine learning component and compare it to human performance. the test scenario is to recognize a partly-assembled model, identify its current status, i.e. the current instruction step, and to return the next step. thus, we created a database of 2D images containing the complete set of instruction steps of the corresponding 3D model. Afterwards, we trained the deep neural network RotationNet withthese images. Usually, the machine learning approaches are compared to each other;our contribution evaluates the machine learning results withhuman performance tested in a survey: in a clean-room setting the survey and RotationNet results are comparable and neither is significantly better. the real-world results show that the machine learning approaches need further improvements.

Faced withthe need to take into account environmental impacts, life cycle analysis (LCA) should emerge as an engine for innovation and eco-design. It is clear that there are many barriers to their deployment. there is thus a need for tools to facilitate their integration in business projects. these LCA tools must be compatible with different existing information systems. In addition, it is also necessary that the coupling of the different data sources helps to make decisions. this article shows the requirements of the company ACV Plus in terms of interoperability and HCI (human-computerinteraction) in order to make its Siec software easily adaptable to various business sectors. Different peripheral tools have been developed to define data exchange formats and meet specific needs. this research aims to develop a generic bus in order to have easier process maintenance and avoid costly development for each new situation. Two PhD thesis have focused on the HCI aspects and on interoperability aspects. More generally, our project aims to develop a new system with interoperable design and management tools that can help any customer in the definition of its environmental projects and eco-design.

Although design in the domain of human-computerinteraction has been widely investigated, the focus of research has been mainly on the user's role and several authors refer to the need for a deeper understanding of the increasingly complex interactiondesign processes. this paper suggests a conceptual framework for interactiondesignthat accommodates and unifies different perspectives from general designresearch while considering the specificities of the domain. Within the framework, description and analysis is done through the lens of design spaces, design artefacts, and refinement relationships between design artefacts. the framework extends existing concepts of design spaces by introducing complex spaces which acknowledge that design is rarely an individual activity but is more often undertaken by teams of designers. the framework also offers a distinction between design options into alternatives and variants to better describe and guide processes of idea generation and a convergence within, and between different sub-spaces and sub-teams. Different types of refinement between design artefacts are also discussed.

Trust is an important decision-making construct helping users to adopt and continually use a system. Despite its importance, past research has mainly focused on studying and researching it in technology mediated interactions. As nature of technical artifacts becomes increasingly intelligent and human-like, a theory for explaining and predicting trust in such artifacts also becomes important. However, studying trust relationship of a user with technical artifacts is still in its infancy. To address this, we build on prior work which empirically modelled trust in user technology interactions and evaluate a humancomputer trust model using partial-least square structural equation modelling (PLS-SEM). Our research results identify four factors: competence, benevolence, willingness & reciprocity which impact user trust. Suggestions for future applications of the model are also discussed. Our study contributes to the literature by advancing the discussion on (a) human-like technologies and (b) the role of trust in human-artifact relationship.

Service robots have been traditionally classified by technology and labor type. However, service robots communicate withhuman employees and consumers to collaborate and deliver service on the frontline. the purpose of this research was to propose a framework for classifying service robots used in commercial places based on the communication that is essential for collaboration and service delivery. the framework classifies service robots into six types, withthe x-axis representing the level of communication and the y-axis representing the labor method that service robots use to provide services. through the framework, the study explained 1) how the service robot and the employee communicate when they collaborate and 2) how the service robot and consumer communicate by communication levels. In addition, it identified the design elements needed for each section of the framework. this will help robot developers and designers consider design elements at different levels of communication when designing service robots in commercial places to enhance the experience of collaboration and service delivery. It is expected that communication will be considered important when developing service robots using the classification of service robots based on the framework proposed in this paper.
