In recent years, human-computer interaction (HCI) technology has progressed significantly toward creating immersive experiences. Yet, the physical interaction within these environments often relies on hand controllers or hand tracking systems using gestures that lack the naturalistic feeling of grasping objects and are computationally expensive, respectively. this study introduces the Resistive Stretch Sensor (RSS) Band, a novel approach to bridging this gap by enabling interactions in HCI through the use of conductive rubber. the RSS is designed as a wearable band that conforms to the user's forearm, responding to muscle expansion during a full power grasp and release motion. As the RSS band stretches, its resistance value changes, which can be used as input for interactions within a virtual environment. the research characterises the conductive rubber material to determine the optimal RSS band design. the design process of the RSS band is detailed, considering ergonomic factors and the need for reliable and repeatable sensor output. A calibration method is developed to translate resistance changes into accurate input for HCI systems. the study concludes by examining the RSS's potential applications, such as in human-computer interaction. © 2024 IEEE.

this paper presents the terminology containing several relevant concepts used in intercultural user interface design as well as the results of an analytic study of literature in the area of culture-centered human-computer interaction (HCI) design. their meaning and application context is analyzed and implications are discussed. Some reviewed examples of related work helped to clarify the issues and to establish a conceptual basis to elucidate the different research approaches in the area of intercultural user interface design. © 2013 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

Acknowledging the current digitalizing of buildings and their existence as interactive objects, this article sets out to consolidate human-Building interaction (HBI) as a new research domain within HCI. It exposes fundamental characteristics of HBI such as user immersion in the "machine" and extensive space and time scales, and proposes an operational definition of the domain. Building upon a comprehensive survey of relevant cross-disciplinary research, HBI is characterized in terms of dimensions representing the interaction space and modalities that can be invoked to enhance interactions. Specific methodological challenges are discussed, and illustrative research projects are presented demonstrating the relevance of the domain. New directions for future research are proposed, pointing out the domain's potentially significant impact on society.

the mobile human-computer interaction is aiming to facilitate communication with the mobile devices. the hand gesture recognition is considered as the most important alternative that can be deployed because it is natural, intuitive and easy to use. In this paper, we proposed our system of static hand gesture recognition to control mobile devices based only on a real time video streaming capture from the front-facing camera of the device. Our proposed system is based on the skin colour algorithm and face subtraction to detect hand area. the features derived from contour extraction, convex hull detection, convexity defects extraction and the palm center detection are used on SVM classifier for the recognition step. this system, running on an Android tablet, achieves 96,8% of recognition rate that proves the robustness of our system. We applied the parallelism techniques to ensure the respect of real time constraint and realise a 23 fps.

Locally generated solar-powered electricity provides relief to electricity deprived villages in rural India. However, despite many positive impacts of prepaid solar-powered electricity services on customers day-today lives, consumption remains relatively low. this poses challenges to long term business sustainability. the aim of the Master's thesis, Power to the People: designing a Better Prepaid Electricity Service for Rural indian Villages, is to investigate the role of household smart meters in increasing uptake of a prepaid domestic electricity service in rural India. through a case study of a local electricity service provider the daily lives of the service's customers and their relationship to domestic energy consumption is investigated. A human centered design perspective informs design improvements to the meters and service design. the thesis concludes that while design can play an important role in improving the service, there are larger socio-economic forces at play that ultimately have the greatest influence on uptake of the service.

Considering the spread of computers and the technological advances of recent years, research on persuasive intelligent user interfaces with a fifty-fifty relationship for communicating with humans is necessary. Recently, anthropomorphic user interfaces have been developed, such as virtual agents and robots. In this paper, we introduce an experiment on the effect on a human of persuasive interaction with a virtual agent which is capable of facial and verbal expression. then, considering the results, we discuss an experiment on persuasion to maintain motivation, comparing human agent interaction and human robot interaction. © 2013 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

this paper examines routine family car journeys, looking specifically at how passengers assist during a mobile telephone call while the drivers address the competing demands of handling the vehicle, interacting with various artefacts and controls in the cabin, and engage in co-located and remote conversations while navigating through busy city roads. Based on an analysis of video fragments, we see how drivers and child passengers form their conversations and requests around the call so as to be meaningful and paced to the demands, knowledge and abilities of their co-occupants, and how the conditions of the road and emergent traffic are oriented to and negotiated in the context of the social interaction that they exist alongside. the study provides implications for the design of car-based collaborative media and considers how hands- and eyes-free natural interfaces could be tailored to the complexity of activities in the car and on the road. © 2013 ACM.

this research analyzed the existing tools in a Moodle VLE within an adaptation of a didactic sequence of bilingual literacy of deaf children. In this context, we proposed to use some of these tools and apply them to a virtual context for the bilingual literacy of deaf children in the 3rd grade of elementary school, who learn by the methodological principles of the direct way literacy. With this purpose, we carried out a literature review to verify the available resources in VLE by associating direct way literacy activities with a set of Moodle tools. Based on these usage scenarios, an expert teacher working with the research subjects evaluated the Moodle VLE tools and suggested the most appropriate ones for the audience in question.

design is often done by teams of designers and other stakeholders. design also creates a time-lapsed collaborative relationship between designer(s) and user(s), who "complete the design through use". the intentions of designers in designing and crafting computational artifacts are therefore important for multiple HCI and CSCW related research and design traditions, including (a) appropriation studies, (b) participatory design, (c) design criticism, and (d) design collaborations in organizational contexts. All of these design philosophies handle intentions differently, including normative, organizational, and ethical aspects of what designers and designs 'should' intend. Some people consider intentions to be highly important, and demand explicit articulations of intentions;some people question whether we give the wrong kind of weight to designers' intentions. With this panel, we will bring these notions to the discussion table to allow a deeper understanding of the diverse theoretical perspectives and research methods available to account for designers' intentions. this will help to theorize design as a social activity, and to understand how people negotiate, evolve, and change designs over the lifecycle of a product or a system. this panel opens a conversation, comprising multiple perspectives, to help HCI and CSCW develop new ways to consider designers' intentions from an empirical and theoretical perspective. © ECSCW 2017 - Proceedings of the 15th European conference on computer Supported Cooperative Work.
