Digital storytelling has emerged as a powerful tool to engage with communities in the last few years. However, little attention has been paid for the challenges and failures faced around using digital storytelling as a tool. the paper talks about digital storytelling as a participatory method explored within three culturally different transforming communities. the key finding in the study is revealing the importance of the preliminary activities that helped designthe innovative methods. In this paper, the author assesses how the participatory research methods, such as story interviews, digital storytelling workshops, and story kits, helped to gather participants' personal experiences within the three chosen communities. the study proposes story culture framework a technique to explore cross cultural communities using stories as its principal focus. the author concludes by highlighting challenges for HCI researchers working with digital technologies and cross-cultural communities.

Uncontrolled alcohol consumption has been the cause of concern for decades, where around 14 million adults are struggling with alcohol addiction, leading to approximately 2,60,000 deaths yearly in India. the study followed a six-step methodology indicating that youngsters, from the age of 18 to 25, consume alcohol for various reasons, including academic or workplace stress, leisure and relaxation. the situation aggravates when individuals fail to reach home safely. Given the condition, the objective of this study was to researchthe impact of alcohol consumption on the young population and suggest design solutions to improve their drinking experience and help them reach home safely after parties. To solve this problem, we introduce Wingman - a robust system that consists of a portable breathalyzer and an interactive mobile application.

Gathering health-related data is quite easy, but visualizing them in a meaningful way remains challenging, especially when the application domain is very complex. research suggests that empathy can facilitate the design process and that narratives can help to create an empathic encounter between designers and the prospective users. We conducted an exploratory quasi-experiment in order to explore whether narratives in form of online reviews are able to evoke designer's empathy when developing an online platform for a direct-to-consumer genetic testing service. the results suggest that the narratives can help designers to engage with and take the perspective of the prospective user, who is then represented in more detail. Lacking narratives from real people leaves the designers to their own imagination, which can lead to the use of rather abstract stereotypes that do not enable an understanding of the user, but affect the subsequent design decisions.

Much social media research has been done to understand interactions and communication on social media, while less attention has been paid to the offline contexts of social media use. How do offline contexts influence everyday social media use? this paper presents an interview study with a focus on Chinese citizens' use of social media in everyday activities. the study found that informants' use of social media and attention on social media was intricately related to their offline social and physical contexts, as well as their varying levels of consciousness. the work draws on activity theory to analyze the interplay between informants' consciousness, everyday social media use, and offline contexts. Implications for design and social media research are provided.

Users of safety-critical systems often need to make risky decisions in real-time. However, current system designs do not sufficiently take users' emotions into account. this lack of consideration may negatively influence a user's decision-making and undermine the effectiveness of such a "human-computer collaboration." In a two-way, 2 (role: operator/system administrator) x 3 (risk level: high/medium/low) factorial study, we investigated the intensity of 44 emotions anticipated by 296 Mechanical Turk users who imagined being the (1) operator or (2) administrator of a drone system identifying (a) enemies on a battlefield, (b) illegal immigrants or (c) whale pods. Results indicated that risk level had a significant main effect on ratings of negative individualistic and negative prosocial emotions. Participants assigned to the high risk scenario anticipated more intense negative individualistic (e.g., nervous) and negative prosocial (e.g., resentful, lonely) emotions and less intense positive (e.g., happy, proud) emotions than participants assigned to the medium and low risk scenarios. We discuss the implications of our findings for the design of safety-critical systems.

MovemenTable (MT) is an exploration of moving interactive tabletops which can physically move, gather together or depart according to people's dynamically varying interaction tasks and collaborative needs. We present the design and implementation of a set of MT prototypes and discuss a technique that allows MT to augment its visual content in order to provide motion cues to users. We outline a set of interaction scenarios using single and multiple MTs in public, social and collaborative settings and discuss four user studies based on these scenarios, assessing how people perceive MT movements, how these movements affect their interaction, and how synchronized movements of multiple MTs impacts people's collaborative interactions. Our findings confirm that MT's augmentation of its visual content was helpful in providing motion cues to users, and that MT's movement had significant effects on people's spatial behaviors during interaction, effects that peaked in collaborative scenarios with multiple MTs.

Motivation - Improvement of the exploitation of human factors in the design of intelligent environments. research approach - the study is a conceptual synthesis of empirical research on different complex and safety critical work. It also draws on lessons learned from human-computerinteraction studies. Findings - the results provide a diagnosis of design tensions that constrain present product design. Key concepts are articulated and a new design framework, the design Field Framework (DFF), is presented. research implications - New practical problems must be found and empirical studies accomplished to validate the joint system concept and the DFF design approach. Originality - the approach draws on the discussion on joint cognitive systems and provides a theory-based contribution to developing joint system design. Take away message - Constructing adaptive human-technology-environment joint systems requires a dialogical design activity. It comprises of interrelated activities in qualitatively different design fields that are characterised by the identified new modes of design and types of knowledge.
