Games User research (GUR) is an established but relatively young field that explores and evaluates the interaction between players and digital games. Several elements in a digital game affect the player experience. Engagement of the sensory modalities is one such element that can affect the player experience. Digital game developers are moving beyond just engaging the visual and aural modalities. they are striving to provide players with a multimodal experience, such as engaging the sense of touch through haptics or, more recently, the sense of smell. It remains to be understood if the various methods in GUR can evaluate or guide the design of multimodal player experiences. In this paper, we critically review GUR methods and assess if these methods can determine the effect of the haptic modality on player experience. We reviewed literature from the Scopus database to identify the various GUR methods, the intent of those methods, key features, types of sensory modalities evaluated and if there is a scope to assess or guide the effects of the haptic modality on player experience. We observe that GUR has not significantly assessed the impact of the haptic modality on player experience. there is also a lack of haptic experience evaluation tools and methods in the context of digital games. For GUR, this presents an opportunity to utilize the insights from existing player experience evaluation toolkits and methods and expand the player experience evaluation process by developing new haptic experience evaluation tools or methods for digital games.

Haptic feedback in Virtual Reality (VR) navigation transforms the digital experience into an immersive tangible experience. Haptic feedback, particularly on the legs and feet, augments VR experiences by imitating real-world actions, such as stepping on or encountering objects. It is beneficial for training, simulations, therapeutic interventions, and gaming. Providing haptic feedback on feet can not only enhance user immersion and presence but also enable more natural and emotionally involved user experiences. Although the use of haptics is prevalent in VR devices like handheld controllers, its influence on user experience and workload during VR navigation, especially accompanied by vibrotactile feedback on feet, needs further investigation. In this two-phase study, we investigated vibrotactile feedback on feet during VR navigation using a mixed-method approach. this work's results indicate that foot-based haptic feedback enhances participants' perception, spatial awareness, collision information, and path guidance without solely depending on visual feedback while reducing mental and temporal demands and effort.

Food allergy is a growing concern in India, and there is a need for innovative solutions to help individuals manage their conditions effectively. this study presents the development of AllerGuard, a user-centered mobile health intervention designed to empower foodallergic individuals in India. the development process involved contextual inquiries, surveys, and interviews with healthcare professionals and food-allergic individuals. the proposed system integrates a mobile application and a wearable device, offering features such as symptom tracking, meal logging, and pollen trigger alerts, all informed by the Health Belief Model. Additionally, AllerGuard provides seamless access to emergency medical services and fosters a supportive community platform, grounded in the principles of Social Cognitive theory. By leveraging mobile technology, wearable devices, and behavior change theories, AllerGuard aims to enhance the quality of life for food-allergic individuals in India. this study serves as a basis for creating comparable mHealth initiatives targeting chronic conditions in resource-limited settings.

Co-design is a collaborative and participatory design (PD) method frequently used in face-to-face settings. However, in-person studies can be difficult or even impossible to conduct in certain situations due to different constraints. thus, an increasing line of work has been relying on methods that allow researchers to conduct PD studies remotely. In this paper, we cover findings of a case study with 25 participants being part of asynchronous and synchronous remote co-design workshops. It was found that there are important differences between the two modalities regarding participation and engagement, activity design, as well as issues with privacy and confidentiality. We also provide methodological implications and actionable steps to conduct remote co-design studies both synchronously and asynchronously more effectively.

Passfaces are graphical passwords that use facial images arranged in grids as password digits. A study utilized faces of celebrities as passfaces that were found to be as memorable as PINs, even among emergent users. However, the grid was not shuffled at the time of recall, raising security concerns regarding shoulder-surfing and smudge attacks. We extend their work by assessing the impact of grid shuffling on usability and memorability. We present a within-subjects, counterbalanced, longitudinal study with 100 university students that systematically compares the performance of Celebrity Passfaces presented in two conditions at recall time, one presented in the same positions (Non-shuffled) and one by shuffling the arrangement (Shuffled). Results showed no significant difference in the 10-day memorability between shuffled (98.97%) and non-shuffled (96.91%) conditions (p = 0.3033), indicating shuffled grids maintain similar usability and memorability as non-shuffled grids. While people took relatively more time to recall the shuffled passfaces in Recall 1 (31.41 s) than non-shuffled passfaces (20.78 s), and more time to recall the non-shuffled passfaces in Recall 2 and 3 (41.25, 46.10 s respectively) compared to shuffled passfaces (38.76, 45.26 s respectively), there was no significant difference between the two conditions in any of the Recalls. We present an analysis of the security and memorability of the faces used in Celebrities passfaces and compare it with the previous study.

Some might argue that text-input-related HCI research in English is verging towards saturation. On the other hand, a lot more work remains to be done in indian languages (and in fact, in several other languages around the world). through this paper, we release in the public domain IDCText, a web based tool that makes it easier for researchers to conduct text entry studies for indian (and other) languages. this application is compatible with all contemporary web browsers and supports studies using any keyboard that can enter text in a web browser text field. the tool has many features that have been used in text input studies (including some special features that indian language HCI researchers might need), and automatically calculates several metrics that text input studies report. To test our tool, and also to demonstrate its capabilities, we conducted an empirical within-subjects counterbalanced systematic longitudinal study (N= 10) to compare the performance of two experimental Marathi keyboards, namely Swarachakra and Swaravarna. We present the metrics that emerged from IDCText. We also reflect on the current capabilities of the tool and the future possibilities for improvement. the tool is hosted on a website and is accompanied by a video tutorial that shows how a HCI researcher can set up and conduct a new text input study. through this paper, we also release IDCText code in the public domain in the open source, so that other researchers can continue to build on it.

As smartphone brands use strategic marketing practices to influence purchasing decisions, consumer perceptions become increasingly important. In this paper, we investigate the question: "Is there any difference in the perceived quality of photographs shot on smartphones from different brands?" In the current market, iPhones are perceived to be high-quality, high-price devices, while several Android phones are considered to be more moderate-price, moderate-quality devices. through this study, we investigate whether photographs shot on an iPhone and on an Android phone have different Perceived Photograph Quality scores. Additionally, we explore whether the presence of a label indicating the brand of the device used affects the perception of the photograph. We present a systematic, within-subjects, counterbalanced study with 36 participants, each of whom assessed 36 photographs, 18 shot on an iPhone and 18 on an Android phone. the photographs were presented in three conditions: non-labelled, a label indicating the correct source device, and a label indicating the wrong source device. the results showed that in the non-labelled condition, there was no significant difference in the Perceived Photograph Quality scores based on the devices used (iPhone/Android) (p = 0.793). However, the scores increased significantly when any label (either correct or wrong) was present (p = 0.006). this indicates that the perceived value of a photograph increases when it is associated with a brand label.

Mental well-being is a critical aspect of overall health, particularly for college-going students, who face increasing levels of stress, anxiety, and depression. the Oxford Happiness Questionnaire (OHQ) has been a standard tool to assess mental health in multiple contexts, including educational settings. However, the self-reported nature of the OHQ leads to challenges like lack of engagement and the occurrence of biases. Conversely, gamification is a concept that has proven to be effective in increasing engagement. therefore, this study proposes a novel approach by incorporating gamification strategies with OHQ to enhance user engagement and assess the mental well-being of college-going students. A gamified application called "the Mirror" has been developed using a 'research-through-design' approach. the study utilized a mixed-method methodology to compare the traditional OHQ with the gamified application in terms of user engagement and experience. Results from a pilot study indicate that the gamified OHQ increased engagement and provided a more enjoyable and personalized assessment experience compared to the traditional format. the findings suggest that integrating gamification into the OHQ can improve its efficacy as a self-guided questionnaire, making it more effective in assessing mental well-being. Future research with larger sample sizes and real-world testing is recommended to further refine the gamified application and validate its effectiveness.

this paper investigates the critical issue of limited eyecare accessibility in India, a significant concern where 80% of blindness and vision impairments are preventable with early detection and treatment. It presents a comprehensive solution to the dire need for improved eyecare accessibility, particularly in rural regions where the prevalence of preventable blindness and vision impairments remains high. the core of this innovative approach combines a service model dedicated to expanding eyecare access and affordability with a sophisticated mobile application designed for preliminary eye condition screenings. the combined solution addresses the critical challenges of early detection and treatment by enabling users to conduct self-assessments for common vision disabilities such as cataracts, uncorrected refractive errors, and front-eye diseases remotely. the mobile app, an integral part of the service model, features a clinically mimicked vision test, a triage system to assess treatment urgency, and the capability for capturing detailed eye images. Aimed at empowering individuals regardless of their geographical or financial constraints, the paper details the development, usability enhancements, and the transformative potential of this service model and app to bridge the eyecare accessibility gap. Additionally, it outlines plans for further implementation and assessment, emphasizing a system thinking approach and close collaboration with stakeholders across the eyecare ecosystem to ensure scalability and impact. through this pioneering combination of service design and digital tool, the initiative marks a significant leap towards reducing the burden of untreated eye conditions and advancing preventive eye health care in underserved communities.

Personal Digital Assistants have gained a great momentum and many innovations are happening in this field in recent years. they are now being widely used in the form of home-based smart speakers such as Amazon's Alexa, Google's Home and Apple's Homepod Mini etc. As voice assistants are becoming popular in India, people are discovering different ways in which they can use them. For more and more people to be able to use them, it not only relies on people to learn and adapt to how they work but also the speakers to adapt to the multilingual indian audience. More than half of the population of India is predominantly Hindi speaking, therefore it is necessary for the voice assistants to not only function in the language but also be able to understand what the user is expecting, feel natural while responding and adapt to the language. this paper presents the results of an evaluation of the two smart personal voice assistants that support Hindi i.e. Amazon's Alexa and Google's Assistant in the dimensions of response rate, success rate and how helpful or correct and natural the responses feel to the users. the paper also tries to explore what participants considered as a good answer when given by a machine assistant and the rationale behind modifying their command to the assistant when they could not get the desired response. Eight people participated in the experiment and the results show that Amazon's Alexa had a better success and response rate than Google's Assistant and the participants also rated Amazon Alexa's responses slightly good in terms of it's way of responding and more helpful in terms of precision of response. But, Amazon's Alexa had a significantly high interruption rate as the participants lost patience due to lengthy responses when compared to Google Assistant whose responses were short and crisp. the overall impact of this research is to serve a basis for finding gaps in the existing popular voice assistant devices and hence can be used as a guide toward
