In an audio communication via VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) over a network with high delay and/or loss, participants can step-over each other and have a poor user experience. this paper presents a novel approach to mitigate step-overs during audio call and hence enhance user experience in audio communications, particularly in scenarios characterized by high network delays and/or loss. the proposed solution involves the integration of dynamic visual feedback into the user interface (UI). through the use of dynamic animations displayed on the user's screen, real-time updates regarding the reception status of the transmitted audio, at the intended recipient are provided. this innovative method aims to enhance the user experience during audio communication sessions under adverse network conditions. We employed a combination of qualitative and quantitative methods to validate our hypothesis, which aimed to reduce step-overs during audio calls with high delay, ultimately enhancing the user experience. the results were positive, with participants reporting improved experiences when animation was enabled where the average rating of the Mean Opinion Score (MOS), which ranges from 1 to 5 (with 1 indicating the lowest and 5 indicating the highest satisfaction), increased from 2.6 to 3.7. And we also observed a significant reduction of approximately 35% in step-overs when the animation was enabled ("animation on") as compared to when it was disabled ("animation off").

Predetermined phrase sets are commonly used to carry out transcription tasks in evaluating text input methods. We examine the aural reliability of a set of 299 Marathi phrases that have been used in transcription studies in the past. We present a study in which 80 native Marathi speakers heard 30 randomly chosen phrases each and transcribed them, leading to 2,392 transcriptions (a repetition factor of eight per phrase). After an initial categorisation of transcription errors, we conducted a workshop with Marathi experts and arrived at an error tagging taxonomy consisting of 17 major error tags and 50 error subtags. After analysis of the transcriptions, we assigned 4,152 error subtags. though the proportion of errors was higher than those reported in a similar study in English, surprisingly, we had a much smaller proportion of comprehension errors. We recommend 142 phrases that are aurally reliable for transcription studies but report the number and types of error subtags so that researchers can make their own assessments. the 157 phrases that we do not recommend have a value of their own, as they can inform future HCI research in indian languages. Our contributions have potential applications in improving Marathi aural transcription tasks, spellcheck and auto-correct, synthetic speech, scripting for spoken interfaces and accessibility studies.

this paper presents a study on primitive input methods in mobile virtual reality (VR) systems, aiming to explore user interactions and the effectiveness of three input methods: single-click, double-click, and pointing-dwell, using a Google Cardboard VR headset. the research involved a pilot study followed by experiments, where participants engaged with virtual targets at various visual angles and distances. Results revealed that smaller visual angles of targets increased operation times, and the pointing-dwell method was preferred for less intense tasks, while single-click was more efficient for rapid interactions. Overall, participants rated the 3D experience positively, though slight discomfort was reported during longer sessions. Based on these observations, we drew some design guidelines for developing future mobile VR applications, with a focus on task intensity, user comfort, and input methods. Additionally, an educational mobile VR application was developed to demonstrate the application of the proposed design guidelines. the findings of this study contribute to a better understanding of effective user interaction design in mobile VR systems, particularly for educational applications. © 2025 IEEE.

Traffic congestion on the roads of the Las Vegas Valley is a growing problem. However, due to the complexity of traffic congestion, it is challenging to find timing problems with traffic signals that contribute to the congestion. Information visualization, geospatial maps, and modern visualization techniques can help domain experts and the public to analyze, understand, and interact with the data to explore and confirm the causes of traffic congestion. Identifying traffic signals that cause traffic congestion offers domain experts a tool for monitoring traffic signal issues and improving road traffic. Before uncovering road congestion causes, we must first identify the traffic signals or intersections that are most congested to get an overview of the congestion throughout the city's road network. this paper includes preliminary results of a 2D geospatial map design that follows human-computer interaction (HCI) principles of reducing working memory load by providing interactive map features and alternative interfaces for expert and novice users. the informal feedback from a GIS and data visualization specialist on the 2D geospatial map design showed promise, however, for future work the design must be validated with other baseline approaches, data sets, and a user study. © 2025 IEEE.

Adaptive Experimentation is one of the most promising approaches to support complex decision-making in learning experience design and delivery. this paper reports on our experience with a real-world, multi-experimental evaluation of an adaptive experimentation platform within the XPRIZE Digital Learning Challenge framework, and summarizes data-driven lessons learned and best practices for Adaptive Experimentation in education. We outline key scenarios of the applicability of platform-supported experiments and reflect on lessons learned from this two-year project, focusing on implications relevant to platform developers, researchers, practitioners, and policy stakeholders to integrate Adaptive Experiments in real-world courses.

Psychological factors play a crucial role in achieving weight loss. However, most studies on clothing design related to weight loss interventions did not focus on psychological factors. this research integrates psychological theories and fashion design to develop the Extended Functional, Expressive and Aesthetic Consumer Needs Model, which encompasses the Functional, Expressive and Aesthetic Consumer Needs Model, the Transtheoretical Model, the theory of Planned Behavior, Reinforcement theory, and Body Image. this model is utilized to promote the design of functional clothing, which aims to encourage healthy weight loss behavioral patterns among consumes by influencing various psychological factors, including cognitive, attitudinal, and emotional factors. this study employed a reverse engineering approach to interview 15 overweight or obese participants and propose design strategies for functional weight loss clothing. the survey focused on five dimensions: demographic data, behavior change stages, existing problems, triggers, and demands and preferences for functional weight loss clothing. the findings revealed users’ clothing demands and preferences from functional, aesthetic, and expressive perspectives. Attitude, subjective norms, perceived behavioral control, experiential avoidance, and body image influence users’ intentions for healthy weight loss. Background: the healthcare education landscape has become increasingly complex, presenting a growing need for innovative problem-solving. One approach that has gained traction in recent years is design thinking, which prioritizes a patient-centric approach to solving complex medical challenges. As a result, design thinking has been integrated into the medical field to tackle these intricate issues. Objective: In order to gain a deeper understanding, we conducted a thorough literature review to analyze the outcomes of design thinking when applied to the use of virtual reality technology in medical training decision-making. the focus of our paper is to provide insights into the following research inquiries: RQ1: How has design thinking been incorporated in pre-training in Healthcare education? RQ2: How has technology such as virtual reality been used in educating medical students and practitioners? Methodology: An extensive search was conducted using virtual reality in healthcare training scientific research data between 2015 and 2024. the extensive search was done using databases including EBSCOhost, Springer, Pub Med, and Science Direct. the searches retrieved n = 10 original articles that were quality-checked and included for the review based on the search criteria. Conclusion: According to existing literature, design thinking in conjunction with VR technologies will be an effective means of pre-training medical students and practitioners. Although many healthcare studies incorporate design thinking without explicit recognition, there is still a lack of understanding and implementation of this approach in the healthcare industry to tackle the multifaceted challenges within the field. © the Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.

the first workshop on human-robot interaction in extreme and challenging environments (exactingHRI: https://***/***/exactinghril) focuses on the forefront of HRI research in applications where robots are working with diverse users in uncertain, unknown, or risky environments to deliver reliable outcomes in repeated sessions. In these scenarios, a robot's autonomous and interactive functions are put to the test, with errors likely to arise. Such HRI systems require design and evaluation in-situ with target users, i.e., “exacting” HRI. the exactingHRI 2025 workshop aims to bring together researchers that investigate the diverse human, robot, task, environment, and interaction factors that are challenging for state-of-the-art HRI systems, as well as innovative designs, theories, models, and methods that equip people and robots with the ability to address these challenges. Workshop presenters will share lessons they have learned from successful or failed attempts in testing their work in such difficult settings, in a bid to encourage and guide the necessary efforts that progress our field to solve real-world problems.

the vision of adaptive architecture proposes that robotic technologies could enable interior spaces to physically transform in a bidirectional interaction with occupants. Yet, it is still unknown how this interaction could unfold in an understandable way. Inspired by HRI studies where robotic furniture gestured intents to occupants by deliberately positioning or moving in space, we hypothesise that adaptive architecture could also convey intents through gestures performed by a mobile robotic partition. To explore this design space, we invited 15 multidisciplinary experts to join co-design improvisation sessions, where they manually manoeuvred a deactivated robotic partition to design gestures conveying six architectural intents that varied in purpose and urgency. Using a gesture elicitation method alongside motion-tracking data, a Laban-based questionnaire, and thematic analysis, we identified 20 unique gestural strategies. through categorisation, we introduced architectonic gestures as a novel strategy for robotic furniture to convey intent by indexically leveraging its spatial impact, complementing the established deictic and emblematic gestures. Our study thus represents an exploratory step toward making the autonomous gestures of adaptive architecture more legible. By understanding how robotic gestures are interpreted based not only on their motion but also on their spatial impact, we contribute to bridging HRI with human-Building interaction research.

Robotic guide dogs hold significant potential to enhance the autonomy and mobility of blind or visually impaired (BVI) individuals by offering universal assistance over unstructured terrains at affordable costs. However, the design of robotic guide dogs remains underexplored, particularly in systematic aspects such as gait controllers, navigation behaviors, interaction methods, and verbal explanations. Our study addresses this gap by conducting user studies with 18 BVI participants, comprising 15 cane users and three guide dog users. Participants interacted with a quadrupedal robot and provided both quantitative and qualitative feedback. Our study revealed several design implications, such as a preference for a learning-based controller and a rigid handle, gradual turns with asymmetric speeds, semantic communication methods, and explainability. the study also highlighted the importance of customization to support users with diverse backgrounds and preferences, along with practical concerns such as battery life, maintenance, and weather issues. these findings offer valuable insights and design implications for future research and development of robotic guide dogs.
