Machine vision has been made easier by the development of computer systems capable of processing information at high speeds and by inexpensive camera-computer systems. A Camera-computer system called SIVEDI was developed based in the shape from focusing technique (SFF) as proposed by Jenn [1] and a shape from defocusing technique (SFD) developed in this research. the SIVEDI system has as entries the images captured by the camera, the number of steps of the focus mechanism, and the user specifications. the focus mechanism used is the internal one of the camera. To control it an interface computer-camera was designed and developed. An equation is introduced to obtain the measure of relative defocus among many images. A 3D image is produced as the result of the system. SIVEDI consist of a number of modules, each one implementing a step in the system model. the modules are independent of each other and could be easily modified to improve the system. As SIVEDI was developed in MatLab environment, it can be used in any computer with this software on it. these characteristics offer the user to access the intermediate results and to control the system internal parameters. Results show that the 3D image reconstruction has an acceptable quality.

Knowledge of the physical properties of objects is essential in a wide range of robotic manipulation scenarios. A robot may not always be aware of such properties prior to interaction. If an object is incorrectly assumed to be rigid, it may exhibit unpredictable behavior when grasped. In this paper, we use vision based observation of the behavior of an object a robot is interacting with and use it as the basis for estimation of its elastic deformability. this is estimated in a local region around the interaction point using a physics simulator. We use optical flow to estimate the parameters of a position-based dynamics simulation using meshless shape matching (MSM). MSM has been widely used in computer graphics due to its computational efficiency, which is also important for closed-loop control in robotics. In a controlled experiment we demonstrate that our method can qualitatively estimate the physical properties of objects with different degrees of deformability.

We exploit knowledge of class hierarchies to aid the training of semantic segmentation convolutional neural networks. We do not modify the architecture of the network itself, but rather propose to compute a loss that is a summation of classification losses at different levels of class abstraction. this allows the network to differentiate serious errors (the wrong superclass) from minor errors (correct superclass but incorrect finescale class) and to learn visual features that are shared between classes that belong to the same superclass. the method is straightforward to implement (we provide a PyTorch implementation that can be used with any existing semantic segmentation network) and we show that it yields performance improvements (faster convergence, better mean Intersection over Union) relative to training with a flat class hierarchy and the same network architecture. graphics processing units (GPUs) are capable of achieving remarkable performance improvements for a broad range of applications. However, they have not been widely adopted in embedded systems and mobile devices as accelerators mainly due to their relatively higher power consumption compared with embedded microprocessors. In this work, we conduct a comprehensive analysis regarding the feasibility and potential of accelerating applications using GPUs in low-power domains. We use two different categories of benchmarks: (1) the Level 3 BLAS subroutines, and (2) the computer vision algorithms, i.e., mean shift image segmentation and scale-invariant feature transform (SIFT). We carried out our experiments on the Nvidia CARMA development kit, which consists of a Nvidia Tegra 3 quad-core CPU and a Nvidia Quadro 1000M GPU. It is found that the GPU can deliver a remarkable performance speedup compared with the CPU while using a significantly less energy for most benchmarks. Further we propose a hybrid approach to developing applications on platform with GPU accelerators. this approach optimally distributes workload between the parallel GPU and the sequential CPU to achieve the best performance while using the least energy.

We repeated a study on the usage of a magic lens and a static peephole interface for playing a find-and-select game in a public space. While we reproduced the study setup and procedure the task was conducted in a public transportation stop with different characteristics. the results on usage duration and user preference were significantly different from those reported for previous conditions. We investigate possible causes, specifically the differences in the spatial characteristics and the social contexts in which the study took place. © 2013 ACM.

the increasing urban population growth leads to challenges in cities in many aspects: Urbanisation problems such as excessive environmental pollution or increasing urban traffic demand new and innovative solutions. In this context, the concept of smart cities is discussed. An enabling element of the smart city concept is applying information technology (IT) to improve administrative efficiency and quality of life while reducing costs and resource consumption and ensuring greater citizen participation in administrative and urban development issues. While these smart city services are technologically studied and implemented, government officials, citizens or businesses are often unaware of the large variety of smart city service solutions. therefore, this work deals with developing a smart city services catalogue that documents best practice services to create a platform that brings citizens, city government, and businesses together. While digitizing data is the first major step for many digital humanities projects, the visual analysis is of high value for humanists, as it brings a wide range of possibilities to work with data. While rather traditional analysis often concentrates on standalone or sets of information (close reading), global inspections of linked data are also requested by today's researchers and made possible through digital processing. Hence, distance reading approaches are more and more found in humanities projects. Next to such approaches allowing new research questions of quantitative analysis, linking previously separate information on a data level is another way of providing humanists with access to further, previously not reachable, global inspections of faceted datasets. As a domain with both, faceted data and a rather low level of digitization, musicology is a prime example of how the digital humanities may improve and support the daily workflows of humanists. Despite the generally low level of digitization, multiple projects already build a basis to help in digitizing the field. As an example, the musiXplora project collected a vast amount of musicological data throughout the last 16 years and now offers both, a detailed biography of persons, places, objects, events, media, institutions and terms and also the linkage between these kinds of entities to help in giving a user a comprehensible overview in the traditionally fragmented field of musicology. Supported by a set of visualizations, the website of the project allows for visual analysis on close reading and distant reading levels. this does not only help researchers in their daily workflows but also offers users with a more casual nature an interesting view inside the domain of musicology.

Localization and segmentation of vertebral bodies from spine CT volumes are crucial for pathological diagnosis, surgical planning, and postoperative assessment. However, fully automatic analysis of spine CT volumes is difficult due to the anatomical variation of pathologies, noise caused by screws and implants, and the large range of different field-of-views. We propose a fully automatic coarse to fine approach for vertebrae localization and segmentation based on fully convolutional CNNs. In a three-step approach, at first, a U-Net localizes the rough position of the spine. then, the SpatialConfiguration-Net performs vertebrae localization and identification using heatmap regression. Finally, a U-Net performs binary segmentation of each identified vertebrae in a high resolution, before merging the individual predictions into the resulting multi-label vertebrae segmentation. the evaluation shows top performance of our approach, ranking first place and winning the MICCAI 2019 Large Scale Vertebrae Segmentation Challenge (VerSe 2019). We propose a general hybrid approach to the issue of reproduction of high dynamic range images on devices with limited dynamic range. Our approach is based on combination of arbitrary global and local tone mapping operators. Recent perceptual studies concerning the reproduction of HDR images have shown high importance of preservation of overall image attributes. Motivated by these findings, we apply the global method first to reproduce overall image attributes correctly. At the same time, an enhancement map is constructed to guide a local operator to the critical areas that deserve enhancement. Based on the choice of involved methods and on the manner of construction of an enhancement map, we show that our approach is general and can be easily tailored to miscellaneous goals of tone mapping. An implementation of proposed hybrid tone mapping produces good results, it is easy to implement, fast to compute and it is comfortably scalable, if desired. these qualities nominate our approach for utilization in time-critical HDR applications like interactive visualizations, modern computer games, HDR image viewers, HDR mobile devices applications, etc.

Industries nowadays have an increasing need of real-time and accurate vision-based algorithms. Although the performance of object detection methods improved a lot thanks to massive public datasets, instance detection in industrial context must be approached differently, since annotated images are usually unavailable or rare. In addition, when the video stream comes from a head-mounted camera, we observe a lot of movements and blurred frames altering the image content. For this purpose, we propose a framework to generate a dataset of egocentric synthetic images using only CAD models of the objects of interest. To evaluate different strategies exploiting synthetic and real images, we train a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) for the task of object detection in egocentric images. Results show that training a CNN on synthetic images that reproduce the characteristics of egocentric vision may perform as well as training on a set of real images, reducing, if not removing, the need to manually annotate a large quantity of images to achieve an accurate performance.
