In this paper we present VCube-PS, a topic-based Publish/Subscribe system built on the top of a virtual hypercube-like topology. Membership information and published messages to subscribers (members) of a topic group are broadcast over dynamically built spanning trees rooted at the message's source. For a given topic, delivery of published messages respects causal order. performance results of experiments conducted on the PeerSim simulator confirm the efficiency of VCube-PS in terms of scalability, latency, number, and size of messages when compared to a single rooted, not dynamically, tree built approach.

Distributed Stream Processing Engines (DSPEs) are currently among the most emerging topics in data management, with applications ranging from real-time event monitoring to processing complex dataflow programs and big data analytics. In this paper, we describe the architecture of our AIR engine, which is designed from scratch in C++ using the Message Passing Interface (MPI), pthreads for multithreading, and is directly deployed on top of a common HPC workload manager such as SLURM. AIR implements a light-weight, dynamic sharding protocol (referred to as "Asynchronous Iterative Routing"), which facilitates a direct and asynchronous communication among all worker nodes and thereby completely avoids any additional communication overhead with a dedicated master node. With its unique design, AIR fills the gap between the prevalent scale-out (but Java-based) architectures like Apache Spark and Flink, on one hand, and recent scale-up (and C++ based) prototypes such as StreamBox and PiCo, on the other hand. Our experiments over various benchmark settings confirm that AIR performs as good as the best scale-up SPEs on a single-node setup, while it outperforms existing scale-out DSPEs in terms of processing latency and sustainable throughput by a factor of up to 15 in a distributed setting.

this paper examines several promising throughput enhancements to the Lempel-Ziv-Oberhumer (LZO) 1x-1-15 data compression algorithm. Of many algorithm variants present in the current library version, 2.06, LZO 1x-1-15 is considered to be the fastest, geared toward speed rather than compression ratio. We present several algorithm modifications tailored to modern multi-core architectures in this paper that are intended to increase compression speed while minimizing any loss in compression ratio. On average, the experimental results show that on a modern quad core system, a 3.9x speedup in compression time is achieved over the baseline algorithm with no loss to compression ratio. Allowing for a 25% loss in compression ratio, up to a 5.4x speedup in compression time was observed. © 2012 IEEE.

A bipartite graph G = (V, W, E) is convex if there exists an ordering of the vertices of W such that, for each v is an element of V, the neighbors of v are consecutive in W. In this work we describe a BSP/CGM algorithm for finding a maximum matching in a convex bipartite graph. For p processors, the algorithm runs in time O((\V\/p) lg(\V\/p) lgp) and it uses O(lgp) communication rounds.

the X4CP32 is a parallel/reconfigurable microprocessor with 2 programming levels. Although it is a general-purpose microprocessor, it has the reliable performance of a reconfigurable architecture. this paper exposes its architecture and programming levels, and discusses the powerful interaction between parallel programming and reconfiguration. It shows two performance-optimized implementations of matrix multiplication using both parallel and reconfigurable paradigms and a parallel implementation of miner intelligent agents.

Commodities-built clusters, a low cost alternative for distributed parallel processing, brought high-performance computing to a wide range of users. However the existing widespread tools for distributed parallel programming, such as messaging passing libraries, does not attend new software engineering requirements that nave emerged due to increase in complexity of applications. Haskell(#) is a parallel programming language intending to reconcile higher abstraction and modularity with scalable performance. In this paper it is demonstrated the use of Haskell(#) in the programming of three SPMD benchmark programs, which have lower-level MPI implementations available.

Load balancing in a cluster system has been investigated extensively, mainly focusing on the effective usage of global CPU and memory resources. However, if a significant portion of applications running in the system is I/O-intensive, traditional load balancing policies that focus on CPU and memory usage may cause the system performance to decrease substantially. To solve this problem, a new I/O-aware load-balancing scheme with preemptive job migration is presented to sustain the high performance of a cluster with a diverse set of workload conditions. the proposed scheme dynamically detects I/O load imbalance on nodes of a cluster, and determines whether to preempt some running jobs on overloaded nodes and migrate them to other less- or under-loaded nodes. Besides balancing I/O load, the scheme takes into account both CPU and memory load sharing in clusters, thereby maintaining the same level of performance as existing schemes when I/O load is low or well balanced. Results from a trace-driven simulation show that, compared to the existing approaches that only consider I/O with nonpreemptive job migrations, the proposed schemes achieve the improvement in mean slowdown by up to a factor of 10. © 2003 IEEE.

We consider the implementation of a parallel Monte Carlo code for high-performance simulations on PC clusters with MPI. We carry out tests of speedup and efficiency. the code is used for numerical simulations of pure SU (2) lattice gauge theory at very large lattice volumes, in order to study the infrared behavior of gluon and ghost propagators. this problem is directly related to the confinement of quarks and gluons in the physics of strong interactions.
