It is widely accepted that use of an Application Specific Instruction Set Processor (ASIP) in an embedded system can provide a solution which is much more flexible than ASICs and much more efficient than standard processors in terms of performance and power consumption. However a lack of an acceptable design methodology and supporting tools for ASIPs limits their use even today. We present in this paper a methodology for design space exploration of high performance VLIW ASIPs by modeling Application Specific Functional Units in Trimaran Compiler Infrastructure. To demonstrate the effectiveness of our strategy we consider two important applications FFT and Kalman Filter and perform compute intensive operations in these applications via special Functional Units. the results we obtain are very promising with up to 2/spl times/ speed improvement.

ISAM is a proposal directed to resource management in heterogeneous networks, supporting physical and logical mobility, dynamic adaptation and the execution of distributed applications based on components. In order to achieve its goals, ISAM uses, as strategy, an integrated environment that: (a) provides a programming paradigm and its execution environment; (b) handles the adaptation process through a multilevel collaborative model, in which both the system and the application contribute. In this paper we discuss the main mechanisms used to implement the ISAM features, and we also present a parallel application that explores some of this features.

the gap between memory and processor speeds is responsible for the substantial amount of idle time of current processors. To reduce the impact provoked by the so-called "memory gap problem," many, software techniques (e.g., the code layout reorganization) together with hardware mechanisms (cache memory, translation look-aside buffer branch prediction, speculative execution, trace cache, instruction reuse, and so on) have been successfully implemented. In this paper we present some experiments that explain why these mechanisms and techniques are so efficient. We found that only a small fraction of the object code is actually executed: our experiments disclosed that more than 50% of the instructions remain untouched during the whole execution, and the percentages of basic blocks which remain unused are slightly greater. In addition to the usage of instructions and blocks, the paper provides further insights regarding the behavior of application programs, and gives some suggestions for extra performance gains.

Datapath width optimization is very effective for reducing the area of a custom-made embedded system. the trivial way of optimization is to iteratively customize, evaluate, and redesign a system to reach near an optimal value. the resulting effect is a long design time. In this paper, we introduce an effective scheme that accelerates design. A system-level pruning of design exploration space speeds up the optimization process. through a single-pass simulation for a reference customization and a model for estimating and evaluating the system's performance, pruning of design space is achieved. Experimental results show that a substantial reduction in design time is possible.

Presents an architecture called the MetaGrid based on Grid computing concepts for resource provisioning for wide-area network-enabled applications. Resource provisioning for wide-area applications can involve coordinated allocation of computing and communication resources. A Grid computing system provides a virtual framework that facilitates controlled resource sharing among different institutions. the MetaGrid extends the Grid computing systems in two major ways: (a) introduces a notion of SubGrid that provides a coarse-grained resource allocation class and (b) introduces a framework for interconnecting Grids by facilitating peering, trading, and brokering among the different Grids. the paper presents (a) the overall architecture of the MetaGrid with a description of the different functional components, (b) the resource allocation model that is introduced by the notion of SubGrids, and (c) strategies of interconnecting Grids.

Computational portal developers often reimplement functionality found in existing portals because there are no common discovery and access mechanisms in place to enable sharing of portal functions. the Web services architecture provides an implementation independent, protocol based mechanism for entities to find, share, and invoke remote services. We developed complementary web services at SDSC and IU that generate batch scripts for different batch queuing schedulers.

A novel component-based, service-oriented framework for distributed metacomputing is described. Adopting a provider-centric view of resource sharing, this project emphasizes lightweight software infrastructures that maintain a minimal state, and interface to current and emerging distributed computing standards. Resource owners host a software backplane onto which owners, clients, or third-party, resellers may load components or component-suites that deliver value added services without compromising owner security or control. Standards-based descriptions of services facilitate publication and discovery via established schemes. the architecture of the container framework, design of components, security and access control schemes, and preliminary experiences are described in this paper.

Standard environments for exploiting idle time of workstations are based on some kind of spying process that detects low CPU usage and informs to a scheduler so that work can be dispatched. this approach generates local interference and, since the same local environment is used, could lead to security problems. We are investigating the exploitation of idle times in network resources based on a complete mode change in a candidate node. After the detection that some node is idle, a mode-switcher boots a new operating system that will work over a separate disk partition. After the boot phase the node is linked to a logical network topology and is available to receive jobs. Users can allocate nodes from this virtual cluster through a standard frontend as they would do in a "conventional" cluster. Because nodes may leave and join this virtual machine we use a distributed processor management to allow user applications to cope with this dynamic resource behavior. In this paper we describe the architecture of the virtual cluster and present the results obtained with a mode-switcher and a prototype application under real use conditions.

Presents the design of the Coven framework for construction of problem solving environments (PSEs) for parallel computers. PSEs are an integral part of modern high performance computing (HPC) and Coven attempts to simplify PSE construction. Coven targets Beowulf cluster parallel computers but independent of any particular domain for the PSE. Multithreaded parallel applications are created with Coven that are capable of supporting most of the constructs in a typical parallel programming language. Coven uses an agent-based front-end which allows multiple custom interfaces to be constructed. Examples of the use of Coven in the construction of prototype PSEs are shown, and the effectiveness of these PSEs is evaluated in terms of the performance of the applications they generate.

this paper presents a new technique for global energy optimization through coordinated functional partitioning and speed selection for embedded processors interconnected by a high-speed serial bus. Many such serial interfaces are capable of operating at multiple speeds and can open up a new dimension of trade-offs to complement today's CPU-centric voltage scaling techniques for processors. We propose a multi-dimensional dynamic programming formulation for energy-optimal functional partitioning with CPU/communication speed selection for a class of data-regular applications under performance constraints. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our optimization techniques with an image processing application mapped onto a multi-processor architecture with a multi-speed Ethernet.
