this paper describes the design and implementation of a real-time cluster of PCs that provides globally synchronized scheduling and predictable message passing. A high-accuracy, fine-grain global clock implementation has been closely coupled with a time-based scheduler to facilitate finely synchronized global scheduling across the cluster. A real-time messaging layer provides predictable communication latencies over the interconnecting Myrinet network. this system provides a solid framework for QoS based real-time communication, and in particular facilitates efficient layering of high-performance real-time distributed middleware such as MPI/RT. We present experiments and results to demonstrate the degree of predictability and synchronization achieved on an 8-node Myrinet cluster. © 2001 IEEE.

In this paper, we present an architecture of an Adaptive Communication System (ACS) that provides applications with programmable communication, control, and management services that can be adopted dynamically to maximize application performance at runtime. ACS supports adaptive and scalable communication services that select the appropriate multicast/broadcast algorithms for a given class of applications. these algorithms take into consideration both the application requirements and the load of computing and communication systems. We overview the ACS architecture and then describe our approach to implement the ACS group communication services. We introduce two procedures (Resource Aware procedure and Application Aware procedure) to build the appropriate multicast tree that takes into consideration both the characteristics and load conditions of machines as well as the group communication patterns of a given application. We develop analytical techniques and new metric measures to characterize and quantify the performance of a multicast tree. We also present our preliminary performance results that show significant performance gain can be achieved from using ACS multicast algorithms. © 2001 IEEE.

the vision of Computational Grids promises an exciting future for high performance computing (HPC). In this project we make a small but practical step toward the grand vision of pervasive HPC by using some of the prevailing Internet technologies to enable access of HPC anytime and anywhere. Specifically, this project focuses on HPC that could be accessed by using World Wide Web. We have conducted experiments based on engineering/scientific applications. Examples include simulations of Automated Guided Vehicles thereafter AGVs for short) in container port operations, N-body and molecular simulations. We initially build system based on an ad-hoc approach, whose merits and demerits are identified then, we employ Jini technology to reconstruct the system architecture and present a more efficient and robust model. performance studies are also presented. the objectives are to explore and address relevant issues, evaluate various approaches, demonstrate a workable version and conduct experiments with actual Web-enabled applications. the result is that now we are able to partially realize the dream of using the HPCs anytime and anywhere through devices such as a wireless/mobile computer as long as they are armed with a common Web browser.

this paper presents JECho, a Java-based communication infrastructure for collaborative high performance applications. JECho implements a publish/subscribe communication paradigm, permitting distributed concurrent sets of components to provide interactive service to collaborating end users via event channels. JECho's eager handler concept allows individual event subscribers to dynamically tailor event flows to adapt to runtime changes in component behaviors and needs, and to changes in platform resources. Benchmark results suggest that JECho may be used for building large-scale, high-performance event delivery systems which can efficiently adapt to changes in user needs or the environment using eager handlers. © 2001 IEEE.

this paper deals with high performance computing in heterogeneous clusters using the Distributed Object-Oriented threads System (DOTS). DOTS is a parallelization platform that enables the programmer to build distributed parallel applications using a high level and easy-to-use parallel programming paradigm. It integrates a wide range of different systems (from realtime kernels to mainframes) into a single system environment for high performance computing. A special design focus of DOTS is to optimize usability aspects. Additionally, the paper discusses three advanced features of DOTS that especially support its deployment in heterogeneous environments for high performance computing. For defining the parallel environment and for documenting and evaluating the results of program runs an integrated XML centric approach is presented. A light-weight checkpointing mechanism which is seamlessly integrated into DOTS and especially designed for heterogeneous environments is described. DOTS is based on a highly customizable communication kernel. Run time measurements are presented that prove the efficiency of the communication kernel in heterogeneous clusters. Also, performance measurements of a non-trivial parallel application from the field of Symbolic Computation are presented, which revealed good speedups on a heterogeneous cluster of workstations. © 2001 IEEE.

the performance of applications on parallel computer systems is analyzed, and a general timing formula is proposed in the paper. the analyses are based on the "double-stream" (computation and data access) idea. According to these analyses, some techniques for improving the performance of applications on parallel systems are given. the cache thrashing phenomena on symmetric multiprocessors (SMP) are analyzed, and the "fix point" iteration method is used to deal with some cache thrashing phenomena. the timing balance problem of heterogeneous clusters is discussed, and the non-uniform partition strategy is studied. Some optimization techniques (horizontal-vertical decomposition, non-uniform partition, and overlapping of communication with computation) are used to improve the performance of a class of parallel applications on clusters of multiprocessors. Compared with previous results, our experiences show distinct performance improvements. © 2001 IEEE.

this paper verifies the assurance required of highly reliable, low cost, highly functional and high performance space on-board computers that use commercial parts, and proposes an architecture and technology that realize the necessary assurance. With such technology, the on-board computer attains not only fault tolerance but also high versatility, that allows it to be applied to any space vehicle and space application as well as enabling easy testing and verification. this is demonstrated through a functional verification test and radiation test using a breadboard model (BBM).

the issue of providing efficient media retrieval services has been an important problem in recent years. Among them, video-on-demand (VoD) is one of the most popular and challenging ones. An efficient solution to the VoD service problem should address the twin issues of scalability and client heterogeneity. In this paper, we propose a VoD server model, that is based on the parallel video server architecture and layered coding, to satisfy these twin issues. the proposed model dynamically adapts to the server load in order to maximize the number of clients (connections) admitted while maintaining a high quality for the already admitted connections. We study the adaptiveness our model by proposing promotion/demotion policies for quality adaptation. We also propose a performance metric, called marginal quality, that normalizes the quality (received) across heterogeneous connections. Finally, we evaluate the effectiveness of our model, in terms of connection acceptance rate, connection quality, and fairness in connection quality, through extensive simulation studies. © 2001 IEEE.

An important issue in the design of a mobile computing system is how to manage the real-time locations of mobile clients. In the existing commercial cellular mobile computing systems, a two-tier architecture is used [13]. However, the two-tier architecture is not scalable and is not suitable to the new mobile computing applications. In the literatures [1, 12], a hierarchical database structure is proposed in which the location information of the mobile clients within a cell is managed by the location database responsible for the cell. the location databases of different cells are organized into a tree structure to facilitate the search of mobile clients. Although this architecture can distribute the update and searching workload amongst the location databases in the system, it has the problem of heavy location update overhead and long search delay. thus, it is not suitable to the system which is supporting real-time queries. In this paper, we study how to generate location update in the distance-based update method. Two methods are proposed for calculating the optimal distance threshold with the objectives to minimize the total location management cost and the latency in searching the location of a mobile client. © 2001 IEEE.
