Portability and energy consumption have become increasingly important in mobile computing. Consequently, there is a clear need for energy-aware portable software design. this paper brings these two design considerations together by examining and optimizing the energy consumption of array allocation mechanisms in Java. Specifically, using a set of array-dominated benchmarks and a partitioned memory architecture with multiple low-power operating modes, we study two data optimization techniques: memory layout modification and array-interleaving. Our results show that these optimizations increase the effectiveness of energy savings due to power control of partitioned memory architectures across different memory configurations. It is observed that the memory energy can be significantly reduced using these techniques.

Column compression multipliers are frequently used in high-performance computer systems due to their short worst case delay. this paper examines the area, delay, and power characteristics of Dadda (1965) and Wallace (1964) column compression multipliers in deep submicron technology. Our analysis shows that Wallace multipliers have slightly more area and approximately the same worst case delay as Dadda multipliers. It also shows the importance of considering parasitic capacitances when determining the delay of column compression multipliers, since parasitics can increase the delay of the multiplier by over 60%. As multiplier size increases, the ratio of power to area also increases, due to longer interconnect lines and increased glitching.

the growth of the Internet and the advent of the computational "Grid" have made it possible to develop and deploy advanced computational collaboratories. these systems build on high-end computational resources and communication technologies underlying the Grid, and provide seamless and collaborative access to particular resources, services or applications. Integrating these "focused" collaboratories presents significant challenges. Key among these is the design and development of robust middleware support that addresses scalability, service discovery, security and access control, and interaction and collaboration management for consistent access. the authors first investigate the architecture of such a middleware that enables global (Web-based) access to collaboratories. they then present the design and implementation of a middleware substrate that enables a peer-to-peer integration of and global (collaborative) access to geographically distributed instances of the DISCOVER computational collaboratory for interaction and steering.

the complexity of both parallel architectures and parallel applications poses several problems for the development of performance analysis and optimization tools. In this paper, we describe the motivations and the main aspects of the design of the Dynamic Probe Class Library (DPCL), an object based C++ class library that provides an infrastructure to reduce the cost of writing instrumentation for performance tools. Additionally, we present some of the performance tools built on top of DPCL, which demonstrate the power and flexibility of the library.

this paper presents JECho, a Java-based communication infrastructure for collaborative high performance applications. JECho implements a publish/subscribe communication paradigm, permitting distributed concurrent sets of components to provide interactive service to collaborating end users via event channels. JECho's eager handler concept allows individual event subscribers to dynamically tailor event flows to adapt to runtime changes in component behaviors and needs, and to changes in platform resources. Benchmark results suggest that JECho may be used for building large-scale, high-performance event delivery systems which can efficiently adapt to changes in user needs or the environment using eager handlers.

this paper presents the MPC parallel computer and its MPI implementation performed at the Laboratoire LIP6 of Univ. Pierre and Marie Curie, Paris. MPC is a low cost and high performance parallel computer using standard PC main-boards as processing nodes connected through the specific FasthSL board to a high speed communication network using HSL 1 Gbits/s serial links, IEEE 1355 compliant. Two Asics are presented: RCUBE which is the HSL network router and PCI-DDC the network controller implementing the Direct Deposit State Less receiver protocol. the software part of the MPC parallel computer consists of 2 zero-copy layers leading to a latency of 5 to 40 /spl mu/s and a throughput of 490 Mbits/s. An efficient MPI implementation based on MPICH is presented and evaluated on an MPC parallel computer. Measures show a latency of 26 /spl mu/s and an useful throughput of 450 Mbits/s this paper presents also a performances study of the MPI implementation on the MPC computer. this reveals Several possible optimizations to reduce the overall MPI transfer latency on the MPC computer.

the Computational Grid is a promising platform for the deployment of various high-performance computing applications. A number of projects have addressed the idea of software as a service on the network. these systems usually implement client-server architectures with many servers running on distributed Grid resources and have commonly been referred to as network-enabled servers (NES). An important question is that of scheduling in this multi-client multi-server scenario. Note that in this context most requests are computationally intensive as they are generated by high-performance computing applications. the Bricks simulation framework has been developed and extensively used to evaluate scheduling strategies for NES systems. the authors first present recent developments and extensions to the Bricks simulation models. they discuss a deadline scheduling strategy that is appropriate for the multi-client multi-server case, and augment it with "Load Correction" and "Fallback" mechanisms which could improve the performance of the algorithm. We then give Bricks simulation results. the results show that future NES systems should use deadline scheduling with multiple fallbacks and it is possible to allow users to make a trade-off between failure-rate and cost by adjusting the level of conservatism of deadline scheduling algorithms.

Grid portals, based on standard Web technologies, are increasingly used to provide user interfaces for computational and data grids. However, such Grid portals do not integrate cleanly with existing Grid security systems such as the Grid Security Infrastructure (GSI), due to lack of delegation capabilities in Web security mechanisms. We solve this problem using an online credentials repository system, called MyProxy. MyProxy allows Grid portals to use the GSI to interact with Grid resources in a standard, secure manner. We examine the requirements of Grid portals, give an overview of the GSI, and demonstrate how MyProxy enables them to function together. the architecture and security of the MyProxy system are described in detail.

Networks of workstations have become a popular architecture for distributed simulation due to their high availability as opposed to specialized multiprocessor computers. Networks of workstations are also a well-suited framework for distributed simulation systems based on the high Level architecture (HLA). However using workstations in a distributed simulation system may eventually affect the availability of computing resources for the users who need their computers as working tools. thus, for coarse grained distributed simulation it may be desirable to let the users control to what extent their workstations should participate in a distributed simulation. the authors present a resource sharing system (RSS) that provides a client user interface on each potentially participating workstation. With the RSS clients, users of workstations can control the availability of their computer for the HLA simulation federation. An RSS manager keeps track of available computing resources and balances the participating HLA federates among the available workstations.

Grid portals are emerging as convenient mechanisms for providing the scientific community with familiar and simplified interfaces to the Grid. Our experience in implementing Grid portals has led to the creation of GridPort: a unique, layered software system for building Grid portals. this system has several unique features: the software is portable and runs on most Web servers; written in Perl/CGI, it is easy to support and modify; it is flexible and adaptable; it supports single login between multiple portals; and portals built with it may run across multiple sites and organizations. the feasibility of this portal system has been successfully demonstrated with the implementation of several application portals. We describe our experiences in building this system, including philosophy and design choices. We explain the toolkits we are building, and we demonstrate the benefits of this system with examples of several production portals. Finally, we discuss our experiences with Grid web service architectures.
