the Internet of things has enabled many application scenarios where a large number of connected devices generate unbounded streams of data, often processed by data stream processing frameworks deployed in the cloud. Edge computing enables offloading processing from the cloud and placing it close to where the data is generated, thereby reducing the time to process data events and deployment costs. However, edge resources are more computationally constrained than their cloud counterparts, raising two interrelated issues, namely deciding on the parallelism of processing tasks (a.k.a. operators) and their mapping onto available resources. In this work, we formulate the scenario of operator placement and parallelism as an optimal mixed-integer linear programming problem. the proposed model is termed as Cloud-Edge data Stream Placement (CESP). Experimental results using discrete-event simulation demonstrate that CESP can achieve an end-to-end latency at least similar or equal to 80% and monetary costs at least similar or equal to 30% better than traditional cloud deployment.

Existing blockchain smart contract platforms are designed as monolithic architectures. Even though there are multiple smart contracts with fully independent business logic, they run on a single monolithic container. this dependence on a monolithic container can be a performance bottleneck during the processing of a large number of transactions. To address this challenge, microservice-based architecture is adopted in the blockchain smart contracts by introducing a novel architecture to run independently on separate microservices. the new smart contract architecture is built on top of Mystiko blockchain, a functional programming and actor-based "Aplos" concurrent smart contract platform. Aplos is identified as a "Smart Actor" platform since it is built using Actor-based concurrency handling. Based on the philosophy of microservices, the Aplos Smart Actor platform on Mystiko blockchain is redesigned. this architecture is introduced as "SaaS - Smart actors as a service". With SaaS, different Aplos smart actors in the blockchain are deployed as separate independent services (e.g. docker containers) instead of a single monolith service. this ensures different smart actors can execute transactions independently. An additional benefits to SaaS is that the architecture increases the scalability by guaranteeing concurrent execution of transactions, producing high transaction throughput on the blockchain. © 2021, Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

Prediction-competent prediction for the flexural strength of machine-learning models in concrete embedment made from coconut shells is taken for study in detail in this research work, and it contributes to better understanding and optimization of sustainable construction material. A human dataset was taken of 483 samples containing the key parameters: the coconut shell proportion, water-cement ratio, fine aggregate content, and age of concrete. three ensemble regression models, i.e., Random Forest, Gradient Boosting, and XGB, give pretty good performance with high R 2 scores (0.891 to 0.895) and minimal error metrics (RMSE: 0.181 to 0.186, MAE: 0.129 to 0.141, MAPE: 0.050 to 0.056). the accuracy is confirmed visually by the plot of actual versus prediction and goes further in explaining the effects of the input features on flexural strength through an analysis of feature importance by Partial Dependence Analysis (PDA). the work, therefore, contributes to sustainable construction materials, presenting the potential applicability of machine learning techniques in prediction and optimization of flexural strength with due consideration to development toward eco-friendly and structurally resilient construction materials.

Multi-keyword search functionality as an enhancement to e-learning systems may facilitate the retrieval of instructional resources more efficiently, according to this study. It is more essential than ever for students to be able to efficiently navigate digital materials, as an increasing number of institutions offer online courses. To achieve this, researchers employ a combination of sophisticated machine learning models and preprocessing techniques, including TF-IDF and Named Entity Recognition (NER), as well as Decision Trees (DT), Random Forest (RF), and Gradient Boosting Machines (GBM). the efficacy of the Decision Tree model, which integrates TF-IDF and NER, has been ascertained through exhaustive testing and evaluation. the system attains an exceptional accuracy rate of 98.45%. the results of the research are additionally corroborated by the high $\mathbf{F 1}$ scores of $\mathbf{0. 9 3}$ for overall model performance, $\mathbf{0. 9 6}$ for precision, and 0.98 for recall. the results of this study underscore the importance of integrating sophisticated search techniques into e-learning platforms to guarantee that users can obtain tailored and efficient learning experiences. the findings from this research enhance the visibility and pertinence of scholarly materials, thereby supporting the continuous expansion of online education platforms.

Convolutional Neural Network (CNN), especially very deep networks, are highly computation intensive, resulting in long delays and high-power consumption. the dynamically varying environmental conditions in real world inference can result in highly complex problems, and hence the need for these inefficient deep networks to guarantee satisfactory accuracy all the time. Several studies employ approximation techniques to execute partial computation of the network, in attempt to reduce the amount of computation were unnecessary. However, such approaches are still highly sequential in nature, since they still need to run the whole network. this paper proposes an early termination architecture on an already-trained CNN to allow for testing the partial results midway through the network, reducing computations by terminating the main network when it is sufficient as the inference results. the first proposal is implemented in synchronous circuit, however, due to its nature all memory elements are required to capture even when no new data is generated. the second proposal employs the use of asynchronous circuit to significantly reducing power consumption and further sped up the architecture since an operation need not wait the slowest critical path in the circuit. the proposed circuits were designed on FPGA platform. the results of the asynchronous circuit show a nearly 20% increment in speed with about 12% reduction in power consumption in comparison with a synchronous circuit.

Conversational interfaces have recently become an ubiquitous element in both the personal sphere by improving individual’s quality of life, and industrial environments by the automation of services and its corresponding costs savings. However, designing the dialogue model used by these interfaces to decide the next response is a hard-to-accomplish task for complex conversational interactions. In this paper, we propose a statistical-based dialogue manager architecture, which provides flexibility to develop and maintain this module. Our proposal has been integrated with DialogFlow, a natural language understanding platform provided by Google to design conversational user interfaces. the proposed architecture has been assessed with a real use case for a train scheduling domain, proving that the user experience is of a high value and it can be integrated for commercial setups. © 2021, the Editor(s) (if applicable) and the Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

As digital infrastructure expands, the proliferation of malware files is escalating rapidly. Cyber-attacks have become increasingly complex and sophisticated, posing significant security challenges. Malware files can be challenging to detect when modified or obfuscated to appear different from benign files. Consequently, effective malware detection is crucial. this paper proposes an approach to detect malware, utilizing IoT Malware dataset for performance evaluation. the dataset comprises images derived from the byte code of malware files. Our approach leverages deep learning to detect malware by exploiting visual similarities between malware and benign samples. By extracting distinguishing patterns from the visual representations of these samples, our method efficiently categorizes malicious software. the model achieved a detection accuracy of $\mathbf{9 8. 2 9 \%}$, precision of $\mathbf{9 8. 8 3 \%,}$ F1-score of $\mathbf{9 9 \%}$, and a recall value of $\mathbf{9 9. 1 7 \%}$. these results demonstrate significant improvements in the precision, F1score and recall value compared to the previous best values of $\mathbf{9 8. 6 4 \%, 9 7. 1 2 \%}$ and $\mathbf{9 5. 9 7 \%}$, respectively. Experiments show that this image-based approach achieves high accuracy in malware detection, highlighting the potential of visualizing binary data for cybersecurity applications.

the research work investigates the factors that influence the quality of red wine and how they contribute to positive outcomes. It uses machine learning techniques like Support Vector Machines (SVM) and K-nearest neighbors (KNN) to classify and assess red wine quality data. Traditionally, red wine quality has been evaluated subjectively, which presents challenges. Machine learning algorithms offer an objective alternative. this study compares SVM and KNN algorithms in assessing red wine quality and aims to determine the crucial attributes that affect its quality. To evaluate the classification performance of different machine learning algorithms, metrics like specificity, sensitivity, selectivity, and F1 measure are used. Additionally, grid search algorithms are employed for parameter optimization. In the red wine datasets, the Support Vector Machine (SVM) model obtains an accuracy rate of 89%, surpassing the K-Nearest Neighbors (KNN) model’s accuracy rate of 87%, especially regarding predictive specificity. Furthermore, using grid search algorithms improves the overall performance of the classifiers. this study highlights the effectiveness of machine learning in assessing red wine quality, providing valuable information for producers to optimize wine production processes and ensure high-quality products for consumers.

there has been a growing body of work emerging about effective professional development (PD) models for CS but less research has been conducted around measuring teachers' noncognitive constructs. It is acknowledged that confidence is an essential element of teacher professional performance. In his work Bandura linked teacher self-efficacy to performance in the classroom. Bandura's self-efficacy theory states that an individual's certainty in his or her own capabilities leads to positive interactions with his or her environments. In this study we share our experiences of measuring teacher confidence levels to teach a CS curriculum. this study shares the learning outcomes teachers have most and least confidence teaching, the tools and technologies teachers have most and least confidence using effectively and how these confidence levels change over a two-year PD programme.

Camera traps play a crucial role in wildlife research and conservation, as they provide invaluable insights into animal behavior and population dynamics. However, the manual analysis of the extensive image data generated by these traps presents a significant challenge. Deep-learning models offer a promising solution for automating image classification and facilitating efficient wildlife monitoring. In this paper, a novel hybrid object classification model for wildlife image classification in camera trap data has been proposed. this model combines the strengths of two well-established deep learning architectures, ResNet-50 and DenseNet-121, with an ensemble-learning approach using logistic regression. the data was acquired from camera traps deployed in wildlife habitats and pre-processed it to enhance image quality and facilitate model training. the pretrained ResNet-50 and DenseNet-121 models on the wildlife image dataset were fine-tuned and the ensemble approach combined the feature vectors extracted by both models and uses logistic regression for final classification. the performance of the model was evaluated using metrics such as $\log$ loss and accuracy. the results show that the proposed hybrid object classification model achieves high accuracy of $\mathbf{89\%}$ in classifying wildife species from camera trap images. th advances automated wildlife image classification and supports conservation efforts by enabling efficient species identification and population monitoring
