the Internet of Radio Light (IoRL) project has developed a high performance buildings communications system with Mobile Edge computing (MEC) facilities that can potentially provide intelligent SDN/NFV services over 1G bits/second for each room in the property up to a total of 10G bits/second, with latency from the user terminal to the property gateway of less than 0.5ms and with location estimation accuracy of less than 10 cm. Communications performance at this level of performance and intelligence will allow for innovative application and network layer services so that people can live, work and play from their home instead of being dependent on fossil fuels for physical transportation for their social interactions.

Memristor devices are two-terminal nanoscale circuit elements that exhibit nonvolatile information storing and can be manufactured in ultra-dense arrays with low-power operation. Although, theoretically, memristors are strong candidates for novel memory and computing applications, the fabricated devices show high variability, both device-to-device and cycle-to-cycle, such as varying switching behaviour and maximum (RMAX) and minimum (RMIN) resistance values. those limitations in the device's RMAX/RMIN ratio suppress the wide use of memristors in memory or logic applications, thus, this work presents the enhancement of this ratio on actual memristor devices, namely Knowm memristors, due to the introduction of external noise as a beneficial disturbance, following the nonlinear system phenomenon known as Stochastic Resonance. © 2019 IEEE.

With the development of computer technology, the data generated in our daily life is growing rapidly. Data-intensive algorithms take more and more important part in high performance computing. the Breadth-First Search (BFS) is a typical data-intensive algorithm and characterized with intensive irregular memory access, low computation intensity and strong data dependency. Although Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) offers massive parallelism, BFS is not GPU-friendly due to above characteristics. To utilize the power of GPU for BFS, efficient scheduling of massive threads and better utilization of GPU memory hierarchy are required. In this paper, we focus on highly efficient implementation of BFS on NVIDIA GPU platform. We propose three optimization techniques, including fine-grained parallelism, GPU-oriented CSR structure and vertex quick-search to overcome performance bottlenecks in GPU. Fine-grained parallelism can improve the workload balance for parallel implementation in top-down stage. GPU-oriented CSR structure employs a GPU-friendly data layout, which can improve the efficiency of memory access. Vertex quick-search is proposed to reduce redundant graph computations on GPU. Finally, we conduct extensive experiments on GPU-based platform to verify the effectiveness of these techniques. We achieve 237.94 GTEPS for the Kronecker graph with 2(26) vertices and 2(30) edges. In terms of energy efficiency, our implementation ranks 1st place on the November 2019 Green Graph500 list.

Fifth generation (5G) systems are considered as the future of telecommunications and data processing. 5G systems are envisaged to increase current network capacity by 1000-fold. In addition to increasing spectral efficiency and utilizing wider bandwidths, ultra network densification with wireless small cells is considered a significant capacity-enhancing method for meeting the ever-increasing demand of 5G data traffic requirements. the enormous amounts of data traffic generated in inter-small-cell 5G backhaul networks require efficient routing protocols to speed up the routing decisions, while ensuring high data rates, low latency, and low power consumption requirements. therefore, a parallel routing protocol is proposed to speed up routing decisions in 5G backhaul networks, using high performance computing (HPC). We explore the efficiency of utilizing HPC to manage and speed up the parallel routing protocol using different communication network sizes. Our numerical results indicate that our HPC implementation achieves a routing speed-up of 37x for large network size (2048). © 2020 IEEE.

the estimation of glaucoma progression is a challenging task as the rate of disease progression varies among individuals in addition to other factors such as measurement variability and the lack of standardization in defining progression. Structural tests, such as thickness measurements of the retinal nerve fiber layer or the macula with optical coherence tomography (OCT), are able to detect anatomical changes in glaucomatous eyes. Such changes may be observed before any functional damage. In this work, we built a generative deep learning model using the conditional GAN architecture to predict glaucoma progression over time. the patient’s OCT scan is predicted from three or two prior measurements. the predicted images demonstrate high similarity with the ground truth images. In addition, our results suggest that OCT scans obtained from only two prior visits may actually be sufficient to predict the next OCT scan of the patient after six months. © 2020, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

It is known that the operators in the restaurant industry are currently operating with server systems, custom-made manually installed software and hard configuration support, with high installation and operating costs. With the system developed in this study, without major information technology investment and servers, etc. for small and medium-sized enterprises. It has been ensured that a basic restaurant point of sale, back office and kitchen operations can be achieved quickly and reliably with tablets or computers directly connected to the Internet without installing the device. A structure that is resistant to multi-tenant subscription system, network interruption, stable and at the same time can work in integration with external order systems has been developed. It has been seen that the virtual chef module, which monitors the operation in the restaurant in the upper perspective, enables more accurate decisions to be made by providing a systematic and sensor-based information flow to both the kitchen and the service personnel and the manager in the system. In the measurements made after the development, productivity increase and satisfaction were determined in various fields.

the current state of the art of Simultaneous Localisation and Mapping, or SLAM, on low power embedded systems is about sparse localisation and mapping with low resolution results in the name of efficiency. Meanwhile, research in this field has provided many advances for information rich processing and semantic understanding, combined with high computational requirements for real-time processing. this work provides a solution to bridging this gap, in the form of a scalable SLAM-specific architecture for depth estimation for direct semi-dense SLAM. Targeting an off-the-shelf FPGA-SoC this accelerator architecture achieves a rate of more than 60 mapped frames/sec at a resolution of 640x480 achieving performance on par to a highly-optimised parallel implementation on a high-end desktop CPU with an order of magnitude improved power consumption. Furthermore, the developed architecture is combined with our previous work for the task of tracking, to form the first complete accelerator for semi-dense SLAM on FPGAs, establishing the state of the art in the area of embedded low-power systems.

the state-of-art DNN structures involve high computation and great demand for memory storage which pose intensive challenge on DNN framework resources. To mitigate the challenges, weight pruning techniques has been studied. However, high accuracy solution for extreme structured pruning that combines different types of structured sparsity still waiting for unraveling due to the extremely reduced weights in DNN networks. In this paper, we propose a DNN framework which combines two different types of structured weight pruning (filter and column prune) by incorporating alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) algorithm for better prune performance. We are the first to find nonoptimality of ADMM process and unused weights in a structured pruned model, and further design an optimization framework which contains the first proposed Network Purification and Unused Path Removal algorithms which are dedicated to post-processing an structured pruned model after ADMM steps. Some high lights shows we achieve 232× compression on LeNet-5, 60× compression on ResNet-18 CIFAR-10 and over 5× compression on AlexNet. the convex hull problem has practical applications in mesh generation, file searching, cluster analysis, collision detection, image processing, statistics, etc. In this paper, we present a novel pruning-based approach for finding the convex hull set for 2D and 3D datasets using parallel algorithms. this approach, which is a combination of pruning, divide and conquer, and parallel computing, is flexible to be employed in a distributed computing environment. We propose the algorithm for both CPU and GPU (CUDA) computation models. the results show that Concurrenthull has a performance gain as the input data size increases. Providing an independently dividable approach, our algorithm has the benefit of handling huge datasets as opposed to other approaches presented in this paper which failed to manage the same datasets. © 2020, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.
