the just noticeable difference (JND) is the minimal difference between stimuli that can be detected by a person. the picture-wise just noticeable difference (PJND) for a given reference image and a compression algorithm represents the minimal level of compression that causes noticeable differences in the reconstruction. these differences can only be observed in some specific regions within the image, dubbed as JND-critical regions. Identifying these regions can improve the development of image compression algorithms. Due to the fact that visual perception varies among individuals, determining the PJND values and JND-critical regions for a target population of consumers requires subjective assessment experiments involving a sufficiently large number of observers. In this paper, we propose a novel framework for conducting such experiments using crowdsourcing. By applying this framework, we created a novel PJND dataset, KonJND++, consisting of 300 source images, compressed versions thereof under JPEG or BPG compression, and an average of 43 ratings of PJND and 129 self-reported locations of JND-critical regions for each source image. Our experiments demonstrate the effectiveness and reliability of our proposed framework, which is easy to be adapted for collecting a large-scale dataset. the source code and dataset are available at https://***/angchen-dev/LocJND.

this paper presents a thorough experimental evaluation of an extended Gaussian Mixture Probability Hypothesis Density filter which is able to provide state estimates for the maintenance of a multi-robot formation, even when the communication fails and the tracking data are insufficient for maintaining a stable formation. the filter incorporates, firstly, absolute poses exchanged by the robots, and secondly, the geometry of the desired formation. By combining communicated data, information about the formation, and sensory detections, the resulting algorithm preserves accuracy in the state estimates despite frequent occurrences of long-duration sensing occlusions, and provides the necessary state information when the communication is sporadic or suffers from short-term outage. Differently from our previous contributions, in which the tracking strategy has only been tested in simulation, in this paper we present the results of experiments with a real multi-robot system. the results confirm that the algorithm enables robust formation maintenance in cluttered environments, under conditions affected by sporadic communication and high measurement uncertainty. © 2022, the Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

With the fast growth of the scientific papers, it is vital to discover the implicit knowledge from the enormous information accurately and efficiently. To achieve this goal, we propose a percolation algorithm to discover emerging research topics based on SPO predications, which constructs a three-level SPO-based semantic relation network in the research area of stem cells. We perform the experiments on the scientific papers of stem cells from 2013 to 2015, and the experimental results indicate that the proposed approach can effectively and accurately discover the emerging research topics of stem cells. © 2019, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

We study the problem of counting the number of occurrences of a given six-vertex pattern graph S in an n-vertex host graph H. We engineer an open-source GPU implementation of a distributed algorithm design of Björklund and Kaski [PODC 2016] where (i) the execution of the algorithm can be delegated [Goldwasser, Kalai, and Rothblum, J. ACM 2015] to produce a noninteractive probabilistically checkable proof of correctness, and (ii) the execution of the algorithm when preparing the proof tolerates a controllable number of adversarial errors. experiments with NVIDIA Tesla K80 and Tesla P100 Accelerators demonstrate that the framework is practical for inputs of up to 512 vertices, with proof checking being several orders of magnitude more efficient than preparing the proof;however, proof preparation still carries at least one order of magnitude overhead compared with just solving the problem. this paper presents a combination of guidance and control algorithms, for spacecraft proximity operations in presence of multiple obstacles. the guidance algorithm is based on the theory of artificial potential field (APF) and the control algorithm is based on the theory of sliding mode control (SMC). the effects of both uncertainties and external disturbances are considered in this research. the proposed strategy is validated both by simulations and by experiments on a real testbed. the proposed algorithm appears to be suitable for autonomous, real-time control of complex maneuvers with a minimum on-board computational effort. It is also able to avoid obstacles while avoiding the local minimum issues in APF algorithms. © 2018 IEEE.

A discontinuous learning law is implemented here to adjust an adaptive non-parametric identifier, based on the differential neural networks (DNNs) approximations. the learning law for DNN uses the vector form of an extended super-twisting algorithm as the output injection term in the DNN structure. the learning laws with discontinuous dynamics have been obtained from the application of a special class of strong lower semi-continuous Lyapunov function. the developed observer was tested on both modelled and experimental input-output information on the specific the ozonation process of a contaminated solid phase. A numerical example illustrates the observer performance when the input-output information is free of the observation noise. the observer has been evaluated using real experimental data, obtained by the direct laboratory analysis. In both cases, modelling and real experiments, the coincidence between the ozonation variables and the estimated states shows a remarkable correspondence. © 2018 IEEE.

the goal of this paper is to establish a widely applicable method for exploiting the sparsity in generalized eigenvector estimation. We propose an 1-penalized extension of the Adaptive normalized quasi-Newton algorithm Nguyen and Yamada, 2013. To enhance sparsity in the estimate of the generalized eigenvector, the proposed adaptive algorithm maximizes a certain non-convex criterion with 1 penalty. A convergence analysis is also given for the proposed algorithm with decaying weight. Numerical experiments show that the proposed algorithm improves the subspace tracking performance in the situation where the covariance matrix pencil has sparse principal generalized eigenvector and is effective for recent sparsity-aware eigenvector analysis, e.g., sparse PCA. © 2018 IEEE.

In five-axis computer numerical control (CNC) machining, the tool axis vector is coordinated to the rotating coordinates by the post-processing. To solve the generated nonlinear error of the actual tool axis vector when the rotary axis is linearly interpolated, a convenient post-processing algorithm was proposed for the rotation angle of five-axis machine tools. A deviation model of the tool axis vector in 5-axis linear interpolation was proposed and the NC tool-paths were optimized by controlling the maximum allowable deviation range of the tool orientation vectors. By Visual Studio 2013, the post-processing algorithm was implemented for generating NC code. Modeling simulation and experiments were carried out on the "S" type specimen to verify the post-processing algorithm. the simulation results were analyzed which showed that the designed optimized tool paths were obviously better than the non-optimized tool paths. © 2018 IEEE.
