Traditional concurrent programming involves manipulating shared mutable state. Alternatives to this programming style are communicating sequential processes (CSP) [1] and actor [2] models, which share data via explicit communication. Rendezvous channel is the common abstraction for communication between several processes, where senders and receivers perform a rendezvous handshake as a part of their protocol (senders wait for receivers and vice versa). Additionally to this, channels support the select expression. In this work, we present the first eficient lock-free channel algorithm, and compare it against Go [3] and Kotlin [4] baseline implementations. © 2019 Copyright held by the owner/author(s).

this paper proposes a new parallel execution model where programmers augment a sequential program with pieces of code called serializers that dynamically map computational operations into serialization sets of dependent operations. A runtime system executes operations in the same serialization set in program order, and may concurrently execute operations in different sets. Because serialization sets establish a logical ordering on all operations, the resulting parallel execution is predictable and deterministic. We describe the API and design of Prometheus, a C++ library that implements the serialization set abstraction through compile-time template instantiation and a runtime support library. We evaluate a set of parallel programs running on the x86_64 and SPARC-V9 instruction sets and study their performance on multi-core, symmetric multiprocessor, and ccNUMA parallel machines. By contrast with conventional parallel execution models, we find that Prometheus programs are significantly easier to write, test, and debug, and their parallel execution achieves comparable performance.

On shared-memory systems, Cilk-style work-stealing [5] has been used to effectively parallelize irregular task-graph based applications such as Unbalanced Tree Search (UTS) [24, 28]. there are two main difficulties in extending this approach to distributed memory. In the shared memory approach, thieves (nodes without work) constantly attempt to asynchronously steal work from randomly chosen victims until they find work. In distributed memory, thieves cannot autonomously steal work from a victim without disrupting its execution. When work is sparse, this results in performance degradation. In essence, a direct extension of traditional work-stealing to distributed memory violates the work-first principle underlying work-stealing. Further, thieves spend useless CPU cycles attacking victims that have no work, resulting in system inefficiencies in multi-programmed contexts. Second, it is non-trivial to detect active distributed termination (detect that programs at all nodes are looking for work, hence there is no work). this problem is well-studied and requires careful design for good performance. Unfortunately, in most existing languages/frameworks, application developers are forced to implement their own distributed termination detection. In this paper, we develop a simple set of ideas that allow work-stealing to be efficiently extended to distributed memory. First, we introduce lifeline graphs: low-degree, low-diameter, fully-connected directed graphs. Such graphs can be constructed from k-dimensional hypercubes. When a node is unable to find work after w unsuccessful steals, it quiesces after informing the outgoing edges in its lifeline graph. Quiescent nodes do not disturb other nodes. A quiesced node is reactivated when work arrives from a lifeline, and itself shares this work with those of its incoming lifelines that are activated. High Performance Fortran (HPF) has emerged as a standard language for data parallel computing. However, a wide variety of scientific applications are best programmed by a combination of task and data parallelism. therefore, a good model of task parallelism is important for continued success of HPF for parallel programming. this paper presents a task parallelism model that is simple, elegant, and relatively easy to implement in an HPF environment. Task parallelism is exploited by mechanisms for dividing processors into sub-groups and mapping computations and data onto processor subgroups. this model of task parallelism has been implemented in the Fx compiler at Carnegie Mellon University. the paper addresses the main issues in compiling integrated task and data parallel programs and reports on the use of this model for programming various flat and nested task structures. Performance results are presented for a set of programs spanning signal processing, image processing, computer vision and environment modeling. A variant of this task model is a new approved extension of HPF and this paper offers insight into the power of expression and ease of implementation of this extension.

Communication overhead is one of the dominant factors affecting performance in high-performance computing systems. To reduce the negative impact of communication, programmers overlap communication and computation by using asynchronous communication primitives. this increases code complexity, requiring more development effort and making less readable programs. this paper presents the hybrid use of MPI and SMPSs (SMP superscalar, a task-based shared-memory programming model) that allows the programmer to easily introduce the asynchrony necessary to overlap communication and computation. We demonstrate the hybrid use of MPI/SMPSs with the high-performance LINPACK benchmark (HPL), and compare it to the pure MPI implementation, which uses the look-ahead technique to overlap communication and computation. the hybrid MPI/SMPSs version significantly improves the performance of the pure MPI version, getting close to the asymptotic performance at medium problem sizes and still getting significant benefits at small/large problem sizes.

A finite-state machine (FSM) is a key component for many important applications, such as Huffman decoding, regular expression matching and HTML tokenization. Due to its inherent dependencies and unpredictable memory access pattern, FSM computations are considered to be extremely difficult to parallelize. As such, significant research efforts have been made to accelerate FSM computations. Although they achieve promising performance results on multi-core machines, these methods are not scalable for emerging many-core architectures such as the GPUs. Based on our experiments, we point out that the bottleneck of achieving scalability on GPUs is the sequential merge inherent to these methods. However, unlike the case for simple reduction loops, parallel merge implementations for FSM computations typically require runtime checks and re-executions, which can also impede performance. Based on these observations, we develop parallel merge techniques that select efficient runtime check implementations and avoids unnecessary re-executions. Further, based on GPU architectural features, we develop optimization techniques to improve performance. We evaluate our parallel merge implementations on a set of representative algorithms. Experimental results show that our parallel merge implementations are 2.02-6.74 times more efficient than corresponding sequential merge implementations and achieve better scalability on an Nvidia V100 GPU.

By identifying the.. largest or smallest elements in a set of data, top-k selection is critical for modern high-performance databases and machine learning systems, especially with large data volumes. However, previous studies on its GPU implementation are mostly merge-based and rely heavily on the high-speed but size-limited on-chip memory, thereby resulting in a restricted upper bound on... this paper introduces RadiK, a highly optimized GPU-parallel radix top-k selection that is scalable with.., input length, and batch size. With a carefully designed optimization framework targeting high memory bandwidth and resource utilization, RadiK supports far larger.. than the prior art, achieving up to 2.5x speedup for non-batch queries and up to 4.8x speedup for batch queries. We also propose a lightweight refinement that strengthens the robustness of RadiK against skewed distributions by adaptively scaling the input elements.

Chip multi-processors (CMPs) have become ubiquitous, while tools that ease concurrent programming have not. the promise of increased performance for all applications through ever more parallel hardware requires good tools for concurrent programming, especially for average programmers. Transactional memory (TM) has enjoyed recent interest as a tool that can help programmers program concurrently. the transactional memory (TM) research community is heavily invested in the claim that programming with transactional memory is easier than alternatives (like locks), but evidence for or against the veracity of this claim is scant. In this paper, we describe a user-study in which 237 undergraduate students in an operating systems course implement the same programs using coarse and fine-grain locks, monitors, and transactions. We surveyed the students after the assignment, and examined their code to determine the types and frequency of programming errors for each synchronization technique. Inexperienced programmers found baroque syntax a barrier to entry for transactional programming. On average, subjective evaluation showed that students found transactions harder to use than coarse-grain locks, but slightly easier to use than fine-grained locks. Detailed examination of synchronization errors in the students' code tells a rather different story. Overwhelmingly, the number and types of programming errors the students made was much lower for transactions than for locks. On a similar programming problem, over 70% of students made errors with fine-grained locking, while less than 10% made errors with transactions.

Recently, graph computation has emerged as an important class of high-performance computing application whose characteristics differ markedly from those of traditional, compute-bound, kernels. Libraries such as BLAS, LAPACK, and others have been successful in codifying best practices in numerical computing. the data-driven nature of graph applications necessitates a more complex application stack incorporating runtime optimization. In this paper, we present a method of phrasing graph algorithms as collections of asynchronous, concurrently executing, concise code fragments which may be invoked both locally and in remote address spaces. A runtime layer performs a number of dynamic optimizations, including message coalescing, message combining, and software routing. Practical implementations and performance results are provided for a number of representative algorithms.

Data-parallel languages, such as High Performance Fortran, are widely regarded as a promising means for writing portable programs for distributed-memory machines. Novel features of these languages call for the development of new techniques in both compilers and run-time systems. In this paper, we present an improved algorithm for finding the local memory access sequence in computations involving regular sections of arrays with cyclic(k) distributions. After establishing the fact that regular section indices correspond to elements of an integer lattice, we show how to find a lattice basis that allows for simple and fast enumeration of memory accesses. the complexity of our algorithm is shown to be lower than that of the previous solution for the same problem. In addition, the experimental results demonstrate the efficiency of our method in practice.
