Efficient pseudorecursive evaluation schemes for non-adaptive sparse grids 1

In this work we propose novel algorithms for storing and evaluating sparse grid functions, operating on regular (not spatially adaptive), yet potentially dimensionally adaptive grid types. Besides regular sparse grids our approach includes truncated grids, both with and without boundary grid points. Similar to the implicit data structures proposed in Feuersänger (Dünngitterverfahren für hochdimensionale elliptische partielle Differntialgleichungen. Diploma thesis, Institut für Numerische Simulation, Universität Bonn, 2005) and Murarasu et al. (Proceedings of the 16th acm symposium on principles and practice of parallel programming. Cambridge University Press, New York, 2011, pp. 25–34) we also define a bijective mapping from the multi-dimensional space of grid points to a contiguous index, such that the grid data can be stored in a simple array without overhead. Our approach is especially well-suited to exploit all levels of current commodity hardware, including cache-levels and vector extensions. Furthermore, this kind of data structure is extremely attractive for today’s real-time applications, as it gives direct access to the hierarchical structure of the grids, while outperforming other common sparse grid structures (hash maps, etc.) which do not match with modern compute platforms that well. For dimensionality d ≤10 we achieve good speedups on a 12 core Intel Westmere-EP NUMA platform compared to the results presented in Murarasu et al. (Proceedings of the International Conference on Computational Science—ICCS 2012. Procedia Computer Science, 2012). As we show, this also holds for the results obtained on Nvidia Fermi GPUs, for which we observe speedups over our own CPU implementation of up to 4.5 when dealing with moderate dimensionality. In high-dimensional settings, in the order of tens to hundreds of dimensions, our sparse grid evaluation kernels on the CPU outperform any other known implementation. © Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2014.

Traditional compiler techniques developed for sequential programs do not guarantee the correctness (sequential consistency) of compiler transformations when applied to parallel programs. this is because traditional compilers for sequential programs do not account for the updates to a shared variable by different threads. We present a concurrent static single assignment (CSSA) form for parallel programs containing cobegin/coend and parallel do constructs and post/wait synchronization primitives. Based on the CSSA form, we present copy propagation and dead code elimination techniques. Also, a global value numbering technique that detects equivalent variables in parallel programs is presented. By using global value numbering and the CSSA form, we extend classical common subexpression elimination, redundant load/store elimination, and loop invariant detection to parallel programs without violating sequential consistency. these optimization techniques are the most commonly used techniques for sequential programs. By extending these techniques to parallel programs, we can guarantee the correctness of the optimized program and maintain single processor performance in a multiprocessor environment.

Two trends changed the computing landscape over the past decade: (1) hardware vendors started delivering chip multiprocessors (CMPs) instead of uniprocessors, and (2) software developers increasingly chose managed languages instead of native languages. Unfortunately, the former change is disrupting the virtuous-cycle between performance improvements and software innovation. Establishing a new parallel performance virtuous cycle for managed languages will require scalable applications executing on scalable Virtual Machine (VM) services, since the VM schedules, monitors, compiles, optimizes, garbage collects, and executes together with the application. this talk describes current progress, opportunities, and challenges for scalable VM services. the parallel computing revolution urgently needs more innovations.

Turbocharging Boosted Transactions or: How I Learnt to Stop Worrying and Love Longer Transactions

Boosted transactions offer an attractive method that enables programmers to create larger transactions that scale well and offer deadlock-free guarantees. However, as boosted transactions get larger, they become more susceptible to conflicts and aborts. We describe a linear-time algorithm to detect transactions that cannot make progress, which transactions need to be aborted, and when. the algorithm guarantees zero false positives with minimal aborts. Our proposals, as implemented in DSTM2, increase the transactional throughput of the system, often by more than 30%.

Client + cloud computing is a disruptive, new computing platform, combining diverse client devices -- PCs, smartphones, sensors, and single-function and embedded devices -- with the unlimited, on-demand computation and data storage offered by cloud computing services such as Amazon's AWS or Microsoft's Windows Azure. As with every advance in computing, programming is a fundamental challenge as client + cloud computing combines many difficult aspects of software development. Systems built for this world are inherently parallel and distributed, run on unreliable hardware, and must be continually available -- a challenging programming model for even the most skilled programmers. How then do ordinary programmers develop software for the Cloud? this talk presents one answer, Orleans, a software framework for building client + cloud applications. Orleans encourages use of simple concurrency patterns that are easy to understand and implement correctly, building on an actor-like model with declarative specification of persistence, replication, and consistency and using lightweight transactions to support the development of reliable and scalable client + cloud software.

Preliminary Results on NB-FEB, a Synchronization Primitive for parallel programming

We introduce a non-blocking full/empty bit primitive, or NB-FEB for short, as a promising synchronization primitive for parallel programming on may-core architectures. We show that the NB-FEB primitive is universal, scalable and feasible. NB-FEB, together with registers, can solve the consensus problem for an arbitrary number of processes (universality). NB-FEB is combinable, namely its memory requests to the same memory location can be combined into only one memory request, which consequently mitigates performance degradation due to synchronization "hot spots" (scalability). Since NB-FEB is a variant of the original full/empty bit that always returns a value instead of waiting for a conditional flag, it is as feasible as the original full/empty bit, which has been implemented in many computer systems (feasibility).

Divide and conquer algorithms are a good match for modern parallel machines: they tend to have large amounts of inherent parallelism and they work well with caches and deep memory hierarchies. But these algorithms pose challenging problems for parallelizing compilers. they are usually coded as recursive procedures and often use pointers into dynamically allocated memory blocks and pointer arithmetic. All of these features are incompatible with the analysis algorithms in traditional parallelizing compilers. this paper presents the design and implementation of a compiler that is designed to parallelize divide and conquer algorithms whose subproblems access disjoint regions of dynamically allocated arrays. the foundation of the compiler is a flow-sensitive, context-sensitive, and interprocedural pointer analysis algorithm. A range of symbolic analysis algorithms build on the pointer analysis information to extract symbolic bounds for the memory regions accessed by (potentially recursive) procedures that use pointers and pointer arithmetic. the symbolic bounds information allows the compiler to find procedure calls that can execute in parallel without violating the data dependences. the compiler generates code that executes these calls in parallel. We have used the compiler to parallelize several programs that use divide and conquer algorithms. Our results show that the programs perform well and exhibit good speedup.

ARMI: An adaptive, platform independent communication library

ARMI is a communication library that provides a framework for expressing fine-grain parallelism and mapping it to a particular machine using shared-memory and message passing library calls. the library is an advanced implementation of the RMI protocol and handles low-level details such as scheduling incoming communication and aggregating outgoing communication to coarsen parallelism when necessary. these details can be tuned for different platforms to allow user codes to achieve the highest performance possible without manual modification. ARMI is used by STAPL, our generic parallel library, to provide a portable, user transparent communication layer, We present the basic design as well as the mechanisms used in the current Pthreads/OpenMP, MPI implementations and/or a combination thereof. Performance comparisons between ARMI and explicit use of Pthreads or MPI are given on a variety of machines, including an HP V2200, SGI Origin 3800, IBM Regatta-HPC and IBM RS6000 SP cluster.

the SUIF Explorer is an interactive parallelization tool that is more effective than previous systems in minimizing the number of lines of code that require programmer assistance. First, the interprocedural analyses in the SUIF system is successful in parallelizing many coarse-grain loops, thus minimizing the number of spurious dependences requiting attention. Second, the system uses dynamic execution analyzers to identify those important loops that are likely to be parallelizable. third, the SUIF Explorer is the first to apply program slicing to aid programmers in interactive parallelization. the system guides the programmers in the parallelization process using a set of sophisticated visualization technique. this paper demonstrates the effectiveness of the SUIF Explorer with three case studies. the programmer was able to speed up all three programs by examining only a small fraction of the program and privatizing a few variables.

Predictive analysis of a wavefront application using LogGP

this paper develops a highly accurate LogGP model of a complex wavefront application that uses MPI communication on the IBM SP/2. Key features of the model include: (1) elucidation of the principal wavefront synchronization structure, and (2) explicit high-fidelity models of the MPI-send and MPI-receive primitives. the MPI-send/receive models are used to derive L, o, and G from simple two-node micro-benchmarks. Other model parameters are obtained by measuring small application problem sizes on four SP nodes. Results show that the LogGP model predicts, in seconds and with a high degree of accuracy, measured application execution time for large problems running on 128 nodes. Detailed performance projections are provided for very large future processor configurations that are expected to be available to the application developers. these results indicate that scaling beyond one or two thousand nodes yields greatly diminished in execution time, and that synchronization delays are a principal factor limiting the scalability of the application.
