this paper demonstrates a technique to write in air using Micaz motes. the application, named MicaPen is low-cost and can be used by the disabled who does not have fingers or limbs. Patients can wear the mote as a wrist watch or bracelet and move their hands based on what character they want to write. the mote detects the movement pattern using the accelerometer of MTS310 sensorboard and displays the characters on the screen. the application can also be extended in several applications including virtual touchscreen or remotely interact with different controlled devices.

In this paper, we present OVERTAKE, an opportunistic routing protocol for Time-Slotted Channel Hopping (TSCH). OVERTAKE combines (1) opportunistic routing, (2) concurrent transmissions and (3) TSCH. We show that this novel combination enables low-latency, central scheduling withstanding node failures. Our initial results show its ability to withstand node failures of up to 40% of nodes of a flow while keeping minimal latency.

this paper describes the development of an experimental wireless sensor network (WSN) testbed for studying the nature of irradiance measurements at the sensor nodes that are deployed at different points in the WSN, and oriented differently depending on the deployment geometry. the network was developed on the roof of an academic building at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte (UNC Charlotte), where the sensor nodes are equipped with pyranometer sensors to periodically collect the irradiance measurements at different points and send then to a centralized base station using multi-hop communication. the collected data is analyzed to demonstrate the spatial and temporal variation of energy availability at each individual node, resulting from the localized variations in the light levels.

Wireless power transfer technologies lead the way towards new paradigms for pervasive networking and have already penetrated the mobile and portable user device research and market. their use is not only limited to charging devices like smartphones wirelessly by using a central wireless charger, but it is also extended to peer-to-peer (P2P) wireless crowd charging, when a user device shares energy directly with another user device. this paper surveys the literature over the period 2014-2020 on both P2P and central wireless crowd charging from the point of view of algorithmic applications as it applies to ubiquitously networked user devices and identifies some open research challenges for the future.

Edge computing established paradigms are prone to implicate solely powerful server-like edge nodes, in static or semistatic topologies, of centrally-controlled edge networks. In this paper, leveraging upon recent technological advancements and trends, we introduce a novel networking paradigm employing resources provided by independent crowd peers, within a zone of local proximity, to establish collaborative networks for edge computing. We call this paradigm the Crowdsourced Edge. We detail the architecture and characteristics of this novel paradigm, highlighting its unique characteristics and specific challenges, while also positioning it vis-a-vis the existing edge computing concretisations. Finally, we demonstrate the Crowdsourced Edge functionality by presenting an ongoing use case regarding a video-enhanced object search.

In this paper, we present a distributed machine learning based intrusion detection system in Internet of things (IoT) utilizing Blockchain technology. In particular, spectral partitioning is proposed to divide the IoT network into autonomous systems (AS) enabling traffic monitoring for intrusion detection (ID) to be performed by the selected AS border area nodes in a distributed manner. the ID system is based on machine learning, where a support-vector machine algorithm is trained using prominent IoT data sets and detection of the attackers is provided. Furthermore, the integrity of the attackers' list is offered by utilizing Blockchain technology, which enables a distributed sharing of the attackers' information among the AS border area nodes of the Blockchain network. Simulations are performed to evaluate different aspects of the proposed IoT system and demonstrate the potential of integrating machine learning based ID to a distributed spectral partitioned Blockchain network.

Data gathering and critical events detection are two essential functionalities for Wireless sensor Network (WSN). In this paper, we propose double mobile sinks network architecture, where two mobile sink nodes visit the Cluster Heads (CHs) to collect the captured data, which is very energy effective in terms of energy transmission efficiency and reliable compared with the case of having one static sink node. Moreover, the proposed architecture provides a capable scheme for supporting critical and non-critical data, which assures a timely delivery for any critical event to the remote monitoring and decision-making center with minimal interference to the non-critical data. Our proposed architecture shows a superior performance in terms of packets transmission delay, and requires low buffer occupancy for the CHs nodes when compared to related work in the literature. Finally, the paper provides a preliminary hardware design and implementation for the proposed architecture.

Stress increases the risk of several mental and physical health problems like anxiety, hypertension, and cardiovascular diseases. Better guidance and interventions towards mitigating the impact of stress can be provided if stress can be monitored continuously. the recent proliferation of wearable devices and their capability in measuring several physiological signals related to stress have created the opportunity to measure stress continuously in the wild. Wearable devices used to measure physiological signals are mostly placed on the wrist and the chest. though currently chest sensors, with/without wrist sensors, provide better results in detecting stress than using wrist sensors only, chest devices are not as convenient and prevalent as wrist devices, particularly in the free-living context. In this paper, we present a solution to detect stress using wrist sensors that emulate the gold standard chest sensors. Data from wrist sensors are translated into the data from chest sensors, and the translated data is used for stress detection without requiring the users to wear any device on the chest. We evaluated our solution using a public dataset, and results show that our solution detects stress with accuracy comparable to the gold standard chest devices which are impractical for daily use.

Wireless sensor-Actuator Networks (WSANs) are an important driver for the Industrial Internet of things (IIoT) as they easily retrofit existing industrial infrastructure. Industrial applications require these networks to provide stable communication with high reliability and guaranteed low latency. A common way is using a central scheduler to plan transmissions and routes so that all packets are delivered before a deadline. However, existing centralized schedulers are only able to achieve high reliability in the absence of interference. this limitation lowers the feasibility of using centralized schedulers in most environments susceptible to interference. this paper addresses the challenge of stable, centrally scheduled communication in low-power wireless networks susceptible to interference. We introduce MASTER, a centralized scheduler and router, for IEEE 802.15.4 TSCH (Time-Slotted Channel Hopping). MASTER uses Sliding Windows, a novel transmission strategy, which builds on flow-based retransmissions instead of link-based ones. We show in our experimental evaluation that MASTER with Sliding Windows achieves routing and scheduling stability for over 24 hours with end-to-end reliability of over 99.6%. Moreover, we show that MASTER outperforms Orchestra, a state-of-the-art autonomous scheduler, in terms of latency by a factor of 8 while achieving similar reliability under a slight duty-cycle increase.
