We report some issues involved in the construction of an interactive, interoperable application, whose primary purpose is to be used as a virtual mockup. this graphic tool was tailored for machine vision application prototyping, to cope with metrological settings of large part assemblies. Some relevant aspects of designing interactive 3D applications will be discussed, including an account of some modern graphics libraries, particularly Java 3D. the achieved results, including some interesting byproducts of this work, to be publicly distributed soon, are also presented.

Video transition detection is an early step towards its high level segmentation and indexing. the visual rhythm is a technique used for reducing the amount of data in a video: it transforms a 3D data set (a time sequence of 2D frames) into a single 2D image. then, we can search for patterns in the 2D image corresponding to transitions in the initial video. the concept of longest common subsequence of a string is used to transform the 2D image into a 1D signal. Further, transition detection is performed using this 1D signal whose simpler and reduced representation leads to the definition of fast algorithms identifying the different transitions.

Linear analysis of intensity level histograms is proposed as a method to determine the area fractions of homogeneous components of images. the area fractions are the coefficients of the respective histograms in the linear combination that best fits the histogram of the entire image. this method can be applied whenever the components can be identified by their individual histograms which must be linearly independent. Its accuracy was tested for images of real surfaces that were edited to contain known fractions of the components, and it proved to be suitable for the analysis of images made of textured components that show large overlapping of their histograms.

In scientific visualization, interaction tools allow users to navigate through volume and explore its features, helping information understanding. the use of sound as a data display tool (sonification) has also been shown to support information understanding and may help dealing with adding dimensions to a visual display. However, thus far the issues of data exploration tools and sonification have been treated separately by the visualization community. We present an interaction model for scientific visualization that considers the main issues related to sonification, and shows a prototype implemented to illustrate the proposed model. the prototype is a class library that implements a number of interaction tools with sonification functions, which is freely available and can be employed in general purpose visualization applications.

We deal with content-based image indexing and category retrieval in general databases. When large categories are searched, systems must explore the database. We introduce an interactive retrieval strategy designed for database exploration. the technique is based on a compound query and a dedicated similarity function. the usual strategy based on a similarity score ranking is replaced by a stochastic image selection process. A competition between feature spaces for the similarity measure refinement is also included in the strategy. A quality assessment is realized on a general database of 6000 images in order to illustrate and validate our approach.

Order statistic filters form a subclass of the stack filters. the design of stack filters is computationally prohibitive for relatively large windows. A possible approach to overcome this difficulty is to constrain design to a smaller class. We propose an algorithm for the design of optimal order statistic filters from training data, and show how it can also be applied to the design of optimal weighted order statistic filters. Some examples that illustrate the application of the proposed algorithm are presented, with considerations on training time and precision of the designed filter.

We present the language LinF for L-System specification. L-Systems are formal string rewriting systems introduced in 1968 by the botanist Aristid Lindenmayer that are used to model fractal images. LinF allows the definition of three-dimensional fractals and stochastic fractals. Together with the LinF definition we present the implementation of cFLC, an OpenGL-based system that generates fractal images from LinF specifications. Results obtained through the LinF formalism show the ease of use and generality of the developed tools with respect to the existing literature.
