this paper reports some issues involved in the construction of an interactive, interoperable application, whose primary purpose is to be used as a virtual mockup. this graphic tool was tailored for machine vision application prototyping, to cope with metrological settings of large part assemblies. Some relevant aspects of designing interactive 3D applications will be discussed, including an account of some modem graphics libraries, particularly Java 3D. the achieved results, including some interesting byproducts of this work, to be publicly distributed soon, are also presented.

Linear analysis of intensity level histograms is proposed as a method to determine the area fractions of homogeneous components of images. the area tractions are the coefficients of the respective histograms in the linear combination that best fits the histogram of the entire image. this method can be applied whenever the components can be identified by their individual histograms which must be linearly independent. Its accuracy was tested for images of real surfaces that were edited to contain known fractions of the component, and it proved to be suitable for the analysis of images made of textured components that show large overlapping of their histograms.

In scientific visualization, interaction tools allow users to navigate through volume and explore its features, helping information understanding. the use of sound as a data display tool (sonfication) has also been shown to support information understanding and may help dealing with adding dimensions to a visual display. However, thus far the issues of data exploration tools and sonfication have been treated separately by the visualization community. this paper presents an interaction model for scientific visualization that considers the main issues related to sonfication, and shows a prototype implemented to illustrate the proposed model. the prototype is a class library that implements a number of interaction tools with sonfication functions, which is freely available and can be employed in general purpose visualization applications.

In this paper we present further results of the application of Dempster-Shafer theory for uncertainty reasoning in corresponding distorted images in computer Vision. In a previous work [12], the model was applied to correspond radiometrically distorted images, that is, images with differences in brightness and contrast, as an extension of the work developed in [I I]. the results showed the model is robust when dealing with pairs of non-equalized images and encouraged its to try to correspond geometric distorted images, that is, pairs of images in which one is rotated in relation to the other. In the conducted experiments, the right image was rotated by different angles to simulate the desired geometric distortions. the model was applied to a pair of rotated images and it successfully established the correspondence of a pair of points. As in previous works, the correspondence evidences are based on the contextual and structural features of the points and their combination is performed Dempster-Shafer's rule of combination for uncertainty reasoning. A search process maximizes the Belief on the combined evidences.

Photometric motion is a computer vision process for the estimation of shape from image sequences of dynamic scenes. It was introduced by Pentland, based on his observation that the photometric effects of motion - the intensity change of a moving point - could dominate the purely geometric ones, due to projective distortion. Here we present a novel formulation for the same shape estimation problem, whose distinctive feature is that of being based on the irradiance change, due to the motion, at a given point in the image plane, and not, as in the original proposal, at a fixed location on the moving surface. thus we obtain an easily implementable procedure which yields good-quality estimates, and which can be extended to single-input shape reconstruction.

Order statistic filters form a subclass of the stack filters. the design of stack filters is computationally prohibitive for relatively large windows. A possible approach to overcome this difficulty is to constrain design to a smaller class. We propose an algorithm for the design of optimal order statistic filters from training data, and show how it can also be applied to the design of optimal weighted order statistic filters. Some examples that illustrate application of the proposed algorithm are presented, with considerations on training time and precision of the designed filter.

this paper introduces Stellar Simplification, a fast implementation of the Four-Face Cluster algorithm. In our version of this mesh simplification scheme, we adopt a probabilistic heuristic that substitutes the priority queue of the original algorithm. this made our version, in average, 40% faster In our implementation, we adopt a very concise data structure which uses only two arrays of integers to represent the surface topology. We also introduce a new scheme,to encode and decode the hierarchy of meshes generated by the simplification algorithm. this scheme can be used for progressive transmission and compression of meshes.
