this paper proposes a new multiscale segmentation technique based on wavelet decompositions and watersheds. the wavelet transform is applied to the image, producing detail and approximation coefficients. the watershed is applied to the approximation image at a certain resolution 2(J), and projected up to higher resolutions using the inverse wavelet transform. At lower resolutions, the segmentation captures large relevant objects, while at higher resolution more details are obtained Since downsizing is inherent to the wavelet transform, watershed segmentation is applied to a smaller image, demanding less computational time. the proposed technique appears to be robust for noisy images, even when the amount of noise is very large.

this paper proposes an algorithm of image retrieval from a partial request. In order to retrieve images containing a specific object or group of objects, we use an algorithm of inexact graph matching, adapted to adjacency graphs of regions. the number of regions representing the object can be different from an image to the other. the algorithm uses a search tree in which only similar nodes are developed the adjacency and spatial relationship of regions are used to prune the tree and accelerate the retrieval. the algorithm computes a distance between graphs, allowing to rank images. this distance takes into account both the distance between region features and the relative position of regions.

this paper deals with content-based image indexing and category retrieval in general databases. When large categories are searched, systems must explore the database. We introduce an interactive retrieval strategy designed for database exploration. the technique is based on a compound query and a dedicated similarity function. the usual strategy based on a similarity score ranking is replaced by a stochastic image selection process. A competition between feature spaces for the similarity measure refinement is also included in the strategy. A quality assessment is realized on a general database of 6.000 images in order to illustrate and validate our approach.

this paper presents an hierarchical approach to segment images of yeast cells based on watershed and space-scale analysis. Yeasts belong to an important fungi class and the performance of bioreactors and other chemical processes are greatly influenced by their morphological character the method proposed is capable of segmenting yeast cells based on the analysis of survival time, shape and gray-scale features of the Tree of Critical Lakes. We show experimental results for one group of yeast images obtained from the School of Food Engineering at Unicamp, Brazil. Preliminary comparison shows that the proposed method provides cells with area 10% lower than traditional approach, as well as its contours preserved.

A robust and efficient technique to segment shaded areas in aerial color images is presented in this paper. this technique is based on the physical phenomenon of atmospheric dispersion of the sunlight most well known as the Rayleigh scattering effect. this technique does not depend on special algorithms to classify or to form clusters of objects appearing in complex aerial images. In fact, the mathematical model, derived from the physical model is very simple but it produces consistent results and can be applied to color images obtained by airborne and orbital sensors (e.g., Landsat TM and IKONOS).

Eye gaze tracking (EGT) allow us to estimate the direction of gaze and the point of regard. this technique has been successfully used as pointing device in computer interfaces for people with disabilities, but significant technological advances are still required to make EGT appropriate to be used in general computer interfaces. In order to improve the EGT technology, a testbed where new devices and algorithms can be evaluated must be defined. this paper presents a survey of the methods used for EGT and organize them into a computer vision framework, that we use to support the development and evaluation of new techniques. As an example of application of the framework, the calibration function used in the EGT developed in our laboratory is tested, and the results show the precision of the method. Higher accuracy of the testing results is achieved using synthetic images generated by ray tracing, from a physically based model of the eye.

this paper introduces a methodology for adding color to grayscale images in a way that is completely automatic. Towards this goal, we build on a technique that was recently developed to transfer colors from a user-selected source image to a target grayscale image. More specifically, we eliminate the need for human intervention in the selection of the source color images, which can be regarded as a first step towards real-time video colorization. To assess the merit Of our methodology, we performed a survey where volunteers were asked to rate the plausibility of the colorings generated automatically for individual images. In most cases automatically-colored images were rated either as totally plausible or as mostly plausible.

A physically-based deformable model proposed by Terzopoulous et al. is governed by the Lagrange's form, that establishes the relation between the dynamics of deformable models under the influence of applied forces. the net instantaneous potential energy of deformation is derived on the basis of the geometric properties, namely the first and second fundamental forms. For simplicity, the normal vector at each sample point is approximated by the second derivative. In this paper we present another approximation for the normal vector which offers better visual simulation. Some comparisons are given.

the classical Douglas-Peucker line-simplification algorithm is recognized as the one that delivers the best perceptual representations of the original lines. It is used extensively for both computer graphics and geographic information systems. there are two variants of this algorithm, the original O(nm) method, where n denotes the number of input vertices and m the number of output segments, that works in any dimension, and the O(n log n) one, which only works for simple 2D planar polylines. In the both variants, a self-intersecting simplified line may be yielded if the accepted approximation is not sufficiently fine. Based on star-shaped subsets, we present in this paper yet another O(mn) Variant of Douglas-Peucker algorithm which preserves the non-self-intersection property for any predefined tolerance.

this article presents the language LinF for L-System specification. L-Systems are formal string rewriting systems introduced in 1968 by the botanist Aristid Lindenmayer that are used to model fractal images. LinF allows the definition of three-dimensional fractals and stochastic fractals. Together with the LinF definition this paper presents the implementation of cFLC, an OpenGL-based system that generates fractal images from LinF specifications. Results obtained through the LinF formalism show the ease of use and generality of the developed tools with respect to the existing literature.
