this work is concerned with multiscale extraction of linear features in speckled images. the methodology combines the a trous algorithm, Hough transform and the line detectors D1 and D2. the noisy image is decomposed in several scales by applying a redundant discrete wavelet algorithm (a trous) and the detectors D1 and D2 extract in each scale the straight lines. An associative symmetrical sum is used to merge information from both D1 and D2. In order to supress responses due to small isolated structures a local Hough transform is applied to each scale and the best scale results are associated by using the symmetrical sum again. Real SAR images were used to test the algorithm.

In this work we study the reliability and performance of interval arithmetic for ray tracing implicit surfaces. We analyze when and how to use interval arithmetic as an alternative to the methods used in POV-Ray for ray intersection. Interval methods are applied as robust approaches for solving the ray-surface intersection problem;i.e. to find the minimal root in a set of analytic functions. POV-Ray is able to solve this problem efficiently for relatively simple objects (objects that can be bounded in a box). Interval based algorithms can speed up the rendering process for scenes with some infinite implicit surfaces, including non-differentiable ones, where the automatic bounding box cannot be applied. Interval methods have the advantage of not needing to provide the interval guess of the maximum gradient, as Recursive subdivision equipotential methods (used by POV-Ray) does. Experimental results were obtained from the evaluation of our interval algorithms and the methods used in POV-Ray in scenes with single objects and in complex scenes with several objects.

this paper presents a new approach for 3D reconstruction of X-ray tomographic images of a magnetic structure, called coronal loop, observed on the solar atmosphere by the Japanese satellite Yohkoh. In this approach, the intermediate cross sections images of the magnetic loop are generated with image morphing controlled by a Bezier curve in arc shape. In space science, this approach has an important application to obtain information about the solar explosions that may cause serious perturbations in terrestrial communication systems.

this paper presents a new method for precise registration of multiple range images with low overlap based on Enhanced Genetic Algorithms (GAs). the proposed method minimizes the alignment error within the common overlap area among a set of views, which is computed by a novel robust evaluation metric, called the Surface Interpenetration Measure. Because they search in a space of transformations, GAs are capable of registering surfaces without need for prealignment, as opposed to methods based on the Iterative Closest Point (ICP) algorithm, the most popular to date. the experimental results confirm that the new method ensures more precise alignments than combined sequential pairwise alignments for multiview registration, providing accurate global alignment among overlapping views.

In this paper we compare two distinct primal sketch feature extraction operators: one based on neural network feature learning and the other based on mathematical models of the features. We tested both kinds of operator with a set of known, but previously untrained, synthetic features and, while varying their classification thresholds, measured the operator's false acceptance and false rejection errors. Results have shown that the model-based approach is more unstable and unreliable than the learning-based approach, which presented better results with respect to the number of correctly classified features.

In this work we describe an approach to extract sulcal lines from cerebral MRI data using the image Foresting Transform. this technique, based on graph theory, provides a sound framework for the implementation of many image processing operators, and has been successfully applied to the solution of many problems, including some in medical imaging. We show the results of applying the technique to slices of MRI data from four subjects and compare these to the computation of the morphological skeleton and to the conditional thickening. A shorter version of this paper has already been submitted to ICIP 2003, but the comparison to the conditional thickening has only been presented in this paper Also, we present a correction to the IFT procedure which prevents the sulcal lines from breaking.

this paper presents a new approach based on morphological operators for application of biometric identification of individuals by segmentation and analysis of the iris. Algorithms based on morphological operators are developed to segment the iris region from the eye image and also to highlight chosen iris patterns. the extracted features are used to represent and characterize the iris. In order to properly extract the desired patterns, an algorithm is proposed to produce skeletons with unique paths among end-points and nodes. the representation obtained by the morphological processing is stored for identification purposes. To illustrate the efficiency of the morphological approach some results are presented. the proposed system was derived to present low complexity implementation and low storage requirements.

In this paper a new approach is presented for recovering shapes from noisy and damaged images as well as the filling in of missing information or the removal of objects from an image. the procedure allows for the denoising and inpainting of images simultaneously. the denoising is performed by the smoothing equation working inside and outside of the inpainting domain but in completely different ways. Inside the inpainting domain the smoothing is carried out by the Mean Curvature Flow, while the smoothing of the outside of the inpainting domain is carried out in a way to encourage smoothing within a region and discourage smoothing across boundaries. Besides smoothing, the approach here presented permits the transportation of available information from the outside towards the inside of the inpainting domain. this combination permits the simultaneous use of filling-in and differentiated smoothing of different regions of an image. the experimental results show the effective performance of the combination of these two procedures in image restoration.

Audio-visual Speech Recognition has been an active area of research lately. A bit, and yet unsolved, part of this problem is the visual only recognition, or lip reading. Considering an image sequence of a person pronouncing a word, a full image analysis solution would have to segment the mouth area, extract relevant features, and use them to be able to classify the word from those visual features. In this paper we approach this problem by proposing a segmentation technique for the lips contours together with a set of features based on the extracted contours which is able to perform lip reading with promising results. We have collected visual speech sequences in our lab and show the results here for a set of ten words in brazilian Portuguese, spoken by different speakers in more than 150 samples. the approach can be extended and applied to other spoken languages as well.

this article presents a new perspective to image retrieval based on multivariate factor analysis. Modern imaging modalities provide an overwhelming amount of information that cannot be appropriately handled without computerized tools. image retrieval methods aim to retrieve relevant images from a collected database, based on their content. the problem is made more difficult due to the high dimension of the variable space in which the images are represented. Factor analysis is able to minimize data redundancy and reveal hidden patterns. the characterization of complex features such as shape can be performed in a new lower-dimensional basis, in which the variables account for the correlation among regions of interest. the similarity between images is computed based on a set of vector variables obtained from image registration. Relevance feedback is used to iteratively determine the importance of each factor in the similarity function. the factors that are supposed to encompass the user's preferences are implicitly detected.
