A model of human automaticity in a dynamic visual task (RADAR) is reported. this model represents a first approximation for a model that reproduces the main results from human participants collected by Young, Healy, Gonzalez, and Bourne (2007). the initial results on response time demonstrate high degree of fidelity (R2=0.98) using a process model derived directly from task requirements. the model leverages the ACT-R cognitive architecture (Anderson & Lebiere, 1998) and depends primarily on assumptions that have been imported from previous modeling efforts. the model is an instantiation of a dual-process theory of automaticity that is mediated by a strategy selection stage.

Social and cultural modeling are being offered here as the most immediate challenge that human behavior representation (HBR) researchers are facing. there is, of course, a long list of significant challenges in HBR - representation of cognition, emotion, and decision making;computational efficiency;ease-of-use the list goes on;however, there are compelling reasons to put social and cultural modeling at the top the list. the U.S. military is no longer primarily a fighting force navigating the physical terrain;it is part of a 'supporting and building' coalition force navigating the social and cultural terrain. the evidence for this is in the headlines. It is shown in the words of our military leaders. this paper reports on research aimed at providing a more realistic simulation model of crowd behavior under both panic and non-panic conditions by modifying the Helbing-Molnar-Farkas-Vicsek (HMFV) model. Such simulations will be of great value both in operational and training contexts. Many operations deal with crowd control and accurate simulations of crowd dynamics. the approach is based on a Social Force Model which consists of two components: social interaction and physical interaction. the social interaction relies on an individual's desire for personal space and the physical interaction consists of body compression and friction. Ongoing research is aimed at the explicit incorporation of gender, ethnicity, age, and cultural differences as factors in the model to ensure broad applicability of the research to crowd control in nations other than the U.S.

For an autonomous agent, the ability to assess the impact of an event on the agent's current course of action is essential if the agent is to react to events encountered during a mission. One aspect of achieving such a reasoning capability is to develop a representation for the mission plan amenable to assessment. We present the Mission Plan Dependence Graph (MPDG) and discuss its uses with respect to autonomous reasoning of consequences and replanning. this is an initial definition of the MPDG, which is part of larger reasoning model being developed. the MPDG represents a mission plan as a directed, acyclic graph explicitly representing actions, actions sequences, and dependences between actions. the model leverages concepts developed within the Program Dependence Graph program representation by applying them to planning graphs. the MPDG directly supports reasoning of primary and secondary effects of events on a mission plan, mission execution, and replanning operations. the MPDG also support multi-agent and multi-echelon planning environments.

"Culture" means lots of things to lots of people. So does the term "model." What elements of each are important to military modeling and simulation? Culture manifests itself in different ways - through physical artifacts, outward behavior, cognitive processes, etc. What of these manifestations are important for modeling and simulation? Likewise, models cover a wide range. Models can be predictive, generative, or simply descriptive, and can cover very narrow or wideranging phenomena. For example, virtual, immersive training simulations often include high-fidelity, face-to-face interactions with a handful of virtual avatars. theater-wide force simulations deal with potentially thousands of entities - individually or aggregated - focusing on force structure and combat. Still other simulations deal with highly abstracted notions of individuals or groups interacting in highly abstracted manners. What does it mean to incorporate culture into these models that themselves have very different levels of fidelity in individual behavior and which are put to different uses? the military modeling and simulation community has in the last few years begun to attend to culture as a possible "behavior moderator" for entities. Some models simply include visible cultural artifacts: avatars might wear culture-specific clothing and might move around in an environment that has appropriate architecture for a region. A few models ground culture in variations of beliefs, motivations, and actions. Some models try to provide cultural variation through parameterization of "cultural dimensions" as identified by Hofstede and others - different settings generate different behaviors. Others still attempt to model mechanisms of cultural evolution. So far, there seems to be little in the way of overarching framework that can guide a modeler to include or exclude particular cultural phenomena, or indicate the appropriate cultural level of fidelity for a particular model. the basic purpose of modeling and simulation (M&S) tools are to tell a story, helping the analyst extract meaning or enhance understanding about a situation or system. the amount of detail available in the story could vary from "Veni, Vidi, Vici1" to the entire text of "War and Peace". By definition, M & S systems leave out details of the simulated environment. However the contextual information embedded in these details are necessary to build a complete picture. Narrative supports this detailed view. Narrative is a natural and intuitive way of describing the semantics and status of a situation. there have been extensive studies by cognitive scientists highlighting the value of narrative for understanding, memory, inference, and problem solving. Several M & S efforts on Human behavior representation (HBR) have at their core a focus on story telling and story understanding. the impact of narrative on training simulations is prominent in many tools developed at the Institute for Creative Technologies (ICT), for example, the leadership training of Full Spectrum Warrior and the emotion-modeled virtual human application. Within the SIW community, there are also systems being developed that center around some aspect of narrative. there a several ongoing working groups, such as the Military Scenario Definition Language (MSDL) development group, the C-BML (Coalition Battle Management Language) effort, and C2IEDM (Command and Control Information Exchange Data Model) that are attempting to create computational forms of knowledge for exchange between automated systems and human stakeholders. this paper will discuss the use of narrative to add context and derive meaning from M & S systems. It will also present the status and progress of the narrative research effort here at ARL, which developed a narrative ontology and an XML schema language. the purpose of this paper is to generate discussion of narrative as a means for supporting the exchange of information from M&S to C4ISR

Human-oriented training focuses on teaching missioncritical interpersonal skills. this includes interactions with team members and subordinates (i.e. leadership), interactions with civilians and other non-combatants (i.e. cultural awareness, winning hearts and minds) and interactions with other organizations both military and non-governmental (i.e. coordination, negotiation). Historically, most simulation-based training systems have focused on platform-oriented training (i.e. flight simulators, tank simulators) or fire and maneuveroriented training (i.e. the OneSAF family). However, the current mission distribution of U.S. military forces in Iraq is heavily weighted towards human-oriented missions such as presence patrols, peace keeping, nation building, and counterinsurgency. Since its inception the University of Southern California's Institute for Creative Technologies (ICT) has focused on immersive applications for human-oriented training. Human-oriented training is the "killer app" for social and cultural modeling. this class of training applications requires explicit models of both characterto-character and character-to-user social relationships as well as models of how culture affects a character's perceptions, beliefs and actions. For example, a simulation-based training application focusing on negotiation requires models of social concepts such as trust including the impact of a student's actions on these factors either positive or negative. Similarly, any application relating to cultural awareness requires not only a model of the target culture (i.e. Iraqi culture) but likely also the target culture's model of the student's culture (i.e. an Iraqi's model of U.S. culture). If social and cultural modeling is making a noticeable impact, and I believe it is, this impact will appear first and be most visible in the area of human-oriented training. this research is part of an ongoing project to integrate a set of cognitive process models capable of acting as a teammate (i.e., synthetic teammate;Ball et al, 2010). A key aspect of any teammate is his or her situational awareness;hence, a key component of the synthetic teammate is the representation of situational information. this paper introduces an approach to dynamically represent situation information within the ACT-R cognitive architecture (Anderson, 2007). the situation model represents the current and past situations and provides the interface between the language processing and the agent-environment interaction components which are the key determinants of the situation. In the paper we provide details of the current approach, a detailed example, challenges faced, and future research plans for the situation model.
