the knowledge on the radar cross section (RCS) of a ground target can support classification and identification tasks. In addition, it might also contribute to the resource management of the radar system because in general less energy needs to be emitted towards larger targets in order to obtain a detectable target return compared to small targets. the focus of this work, however, is to distinguish closely-spaced targets by first determining the mean RCS of the individual moving objects and then using this additional target attribute information to improve the track continuity in such a challenging environment. the RCS of a ground moving target can be estimated based on signal strength measurements. For this method to work, the RCS fluctuations are assumed to follow the analytically tractable Swerling-I and Swerling-III cases. the estimation scheme of the target RCS is incorporated into the Gaussian mixture variants of the probability hypothesis density (PHD) and cardinalized probability hypothesis density (CPHD) filters. the performance of these algorithms is analyzed based on a multi-target simulation scenario using a modified version of the optimal subpattern assignment (OSPA) metric that also accounts for labeling errors.

We address the problem of energy reduction for a wireless sensor network performing an estimation task and propose an a posteriori measurement selection solution. the energy is saved by selecting in a distributed way a subset of the available measurements for transmission to a central processor. We show how to perform measurement selection for a network of radio-receivers tracking a target via the received signal strength indicator. the proposed measurement selection method is independent from the current estimate and based on the assumption that the best measurements have the largest received signal strength. the method operates through distributed max-consensus and schedules transmissions of the measurements without any centralized control. We compare the accuracy of our method with a centralized selection scheme and a Nearest Neighbor criterion. We show that the proposed measurement selection method consumes less energy for communication than centralized and distributed data fusion approaches, under the assumptions that radio nodes are always switched on to detect targets and that high-power long-range communication holds as a lower bound for the energy spent by the network for transferring data to the central processor.

this paper presents results of a clustering-based preprocessing step for multistatic tracking, evaluated on the PACsim dataset, a simulated multistatic active sonar dataset. the clustering step uses a flexible likelihood-based similarity calculation which allows for the incorporation of any available features. In this work, we present results using target strength (estimated from signal-to-noise ratio) and Doppler measurements. Results show that this approach performs well on dim targets in high clutter environments.

the contribution of this paper is twofold: first, it exposes the tracking community to a dataset previously used in acoustics studies and second, it explores the use of the features in this real dataset in clutter removal. For the latter, the Minimal Redundancy Maximal Relevance (MRMR) technique was chosen for feature selection due to its flexibility on big data; the top features ranked by MRMR are sent to a C4.5 decision tree for classification. Contacts that were not identified as clutter are given to the Gaussian Mixture Cardinalized Probability Hypothesis Density (GMCPHD) tracker. Several metrics show that a very small number of features can be employed for satisfactory tracking performance.

In random finite set based tracking algorithms, new-born targets are modeled using birth distributions. In general, these birth distributions have to cover the complete state space. In Sequential Monte Carlo (SMC) implementations, a high number of particles is required for an adequate representation of the birth model. In this contribution, a measurement driven adaptive birth distribution is proposed for the SMC and Gaussian mixture (GM) versions of the cardinality balanced multi-target multi-Bernoulli (CB-MB) filter. It is shown that a filter with adaptive birth distribution nearly achieves the performance of a filter with known birth locations. Additionally, an application of the filter to vehicle tracking using real-world sensor data is presented.

Teams of mobile cooperative robots are ideal candidates for applications where the presence of humans is impossible or should be avoided. Knowing the positions of the robots in crucial in such scenarios. A possible solution is to derive relative positions from local communication. In this work, we propose an anchor-free online channel estimation method aimed at small multi-robot teams. By combining both the Time-of-Flight (ToF) and Received signal Strength Indicator (RSSI) ranging, provided by the nanoLoc devices, we perform an online estimation of the indoor log-distance path loss model. this model will then be used together with an Extended Kalman Filter to track distance between every pair of units. the advantages compared to previous work are: 1) we do not use any extra sensors, since all the data is captured from the transceiver module; 2) we do not use any a priori knowledge, the channel model is estimated online, without the need of fixed anchor nodes; 3) we support the high dynamics of RSSI with the improved accuracy of ToF.

A new approach is described for combining a series of sequential range and Doppler data from single radar platform to perform multi-targets miss distance measurement (MTMDM). In MTMDM, the difference between targets is mainly in range domain, not velocity. this difference leads to resemblance or aliasing in time curves of multi-targets Doppler frequency. Moreover, the miss distance measurement (MDM) using only distance information has some limitations such as larger measurement errors in case of small miss distance. In the new approach, the information of range and Doppler frequency will be first extracted using the centroid estimation method from range-Doppler image. then the extracted information will be jointly used for multi-targets data association, tracking as well as MDM. the data association and fusion of range and Doppler can distinguish multi-targets, and improve the accuracy of the MDM more effectively. the experimental results will prove the efficiency of the proposed method.

To overcome the inherent limitations of image resolution by conventional FFT-based algorithms, a novel state-space approach is proposed to process the measured or simulated synthetic data received from the Step-Frequency (SF) radar system. the proposed approach, including a state-space formulation and decomposition of the generated Hankel matrix, is based on the singular value decomposition (SVD) to extract exactly the scattering intensity and positions of scattering centers on the target. As validation, simulation experiments to reconstruct the shape of small point targets (e. g. a 2-D conical target) have been developed, and the comparative results show that the proposed state-space based method has an advantage of higher resolution and less sensitivity to noise.

We addressed the problem of recovering or "rejuvenating" colors in a faded tapestry (the target image) by automatically mapping colors from digital images of the reference painting or cartoon (the source image). We divided the overall computational challenge into several subproblems, and implemented their solutions in Matlab: 1) quantizing the colors in both the tapestry and the referent painting, 2) matching corresponding regions in the works based on spatial location, area and color, 3) mapping colors from regions in the source image to corresponding regions in the target image, and 4) estimating the fading of colors and excluding color mapping of areas where color has not faded. there are a number of semi-global design parameters in our algorithm, which we currently set by hand, for instance the parameter that balance the effects of 1) matching color areas in the two images and 2) matching the spatial locations between the two images. We demonstrated our method on synthetic data and on small portions of 16th-century European tapestries of cultural patrimony. Our first steps in a proof-of-concept work suggest that future refinements to our method will lead to a software tool of value to art scholars.
