Smart grid is a recent proposal that intends to provide intelligence to the energy distribution infrastructure which is becoming one of the more important challenges for the industrial and scientific community in the near future. One of the main components of this smart grid is an advanced metering infrastructure (AMI), which replaces the analog meters with computerized systems that report usage over digital communication interfaces. Among the different technologies that can be employed to deploy a smart metering infrastructure, PRIME standard has recently attracted a lot of interest. However, due to the novelty of the technology, there is a lack of PRIME network simulators and development tools. In this work it is presented a high accuracy simulator that employs real commercial PRIME nodes code achieving a great grade of realism. this tool has already been introduced in our company code development process and is being used for both code performance improving and network deployment planning. © 2012 ieee.

the capability to accurately simulate the behavior of a racing car is paramount in modern-day racing competitions to quickly find a good base setup to kick-start the work on track. Typically, a professional driver is employed to drive the simulated race car and provide feedback. However, this operation is expensive and time-consuming, as capable human drivers quickly become a bottleneck. In conjunction with highly accurate simulations of the physical car's behavior, a capable virtual driver could thus accelerate the car setup and development to a great extent. In this paper, we propose to apply a data-driven predictive control approach called Data-enabled Predictive Control to model a racing driver by tracking a pre-defined trajectory. We compare our proposed approach with an industrial first-choice Proportional-Integral-Derivative controller and state-of-the-art Model Predictive Control controller, finding that the approach is feasible, and it can provide significant improvements over the state-of-the-art, especially for trajectories whose feasibility is at the edge of the car's capabilities. © 2024 ieee.

Multilevel modeling is a design technique that allows complex models to be specified in terms of simpler ones. An obvious advantage of multilevel modeling is the possibility of reusing existing models, therefore reducing development cost. However, multilevel modeling entails more than the mere application of the ubiquitous principle of decomposition. Indeed, in a multilevel model the same entity may be described at different levels of detail during execution. this allows, for example, to focus on areas of interest by switching to a more detailed model, and revert back to a faster but less accurate one when possible. In this paper we propose GEMMA (GEneric Multilevel Modeling Abstraction), a methodology inspired by DEVS that can help the designer to produce sound and correct multilevel models. We propose a practical realization of GEMMA as a concrete software architecture that can be instantiated in different programming languages. We illustrate a simple use case where different sub-models written in different programming languages are combined according to the GEMMA methodology. Our ultimate goal is to bridge the gap between theory and practice of multilevel modeling, to foster a broader adoption of this useful technique. © 2024 ieee.

We can view the topology of classical clouds infrastructures as data centers to which are connected user machines. In these architectures the computations are centered on a subset of machines (the data centers) among the possible ones. In our study, we propose to consider an alternative view of clouds where both users machines and data centers are used for servicing requests. We refer to these clouds as volunteer clouds. Volunteer clouds offer potential advantages in elasticity and energy savings;but we have also to manage the unavailability of volunteer nodes. In this paper, we are interested in optimizing the energy consumed by the provisioning of applications in volunteer clouds. Given a set of applications requested by cloud's clients for a window of time, the objective is to find the deployment plan that is less energy consuming. In comparison with many works in resource allocation, our specificity is in the management of the unavailability of volunteer nodes. We show that our core challenge can be formalized as an NP-hard and inapproximable problem. We then propose an ILP (Integer Linear Programming) model and various greedy heuristics for its resolution. Finally, we provide an experimental analysis of our proposal in using realistic data and modeling for energy consumption. this work is a work on modeling with simulation results but not a work with emulation and experiments on real systems. However, the parameters and assumptions made for our simulations fit well with the knowledge generally accepted by people working on energy modeling and volunteer computing. Consequently our work should be analyzed as a solid building block towards the implementation of allocation mechanisms in volunteer clouds.

Since its inception in military systems two decades ago, distribution simulation has grown to provide a rich and varied family of technologies. During the same period, military requirements for distributed simulation have continued to evolve. the nature of warfighting today has shifted from focus on large, kinetic engagements to asymmetric warfare and stability/peacekeeping operations. As a complement to the three technical papers in this session, this talk will describe the presenter's experience in supporting military operations, using the distributed technologies associated with Battle Management Language.

the reverse-time migration (RTM) imaging algorithm, which is used for complex underground structure analysis, is known as one of the current mainstream method of high-precision seismic imaging. Nowadays, as the fast development of seismic data acquisition technology, there exists large amount of seismic data. thus, the requirement for the efficient computation of the reverse-time migration (RTM) imaging algorithms over large-scale data have been increased greatly. To address this problem, in this paper, we propose a distributed reverse-time migration imaging algorithm based on the widely-used Spark platform first. Based on that, we design and implement a RTM computation solution based on Spark and GPU with several optimizations, including pre-shuffle&caching and load balancing. We also analyze the fault tolerance capability of the proposed distributed algorithm. We evaluate the proposed methods on the typical three-dimensional wavefild benchmark dataset. Experimental results show that the performance of the Spark based reverse-time migration imaging algorithm can scale up near linearly with computing nodes. In addition, the GPU+Spark based version has significant performance improvement on execution efficiency over the Spark-based algorithm. Moreover, the proposed optimization strategies also take effect. In addition, the method proposed in this paper has been applied in the real-world environment of one of the top oil exploration companies world wide, and has achieved significant improvement under the premise of the algorithm correctness guarantee. © 2023 ieee.

Coalition Armed Forces have used simulations to enable training for some time and in recent years training through distributed simulations have been proven as a means to conducting training. this paper introduces a number of challenges in integrating Live, Virtual Constructive simulations for Training and introducing the Command and Control (C2) systems to provide mission planning and rehearsal capability as well as augmenting support to operations with real feeds from the wider battle-space network and operating picture. the paper will provide examples of current approaches, future architectures and technology trends that may hold an answer to the challenges of distributed training in defence.
