this paper deals with a methodology for a complex testing and assessing the communication protocols for the distributed simulation of road traffic. the methodology enables to explore the dependency of the performance of communication protocols on various features of the distributed simulation. It is also possible to assess the particular communication protocols with an overall score, which can be used for direct comparison of the protocols. the methodology was successfully tested on several communication protocols for distributed simulation of road traffic, which we developed. the description of the methodology and a demonstration of its functioning on a case study with the developed communication protocols is the main contribution of this paper.

As drone technology passes one milestone after the other, drones are used in an ever-increasing number of applications and are now considered as an integral part of the future smart city infrastructure. At the same time, the inherent safety and privacy risks associated with drone-based applications call for appropriate testing and monitoring tools. In this paper, we present a simulation environment and digital twin support for a platform that allows the managed execution of drone-based applications on top of a shared drone infrastructure. On the one hand, the simulation environment makes it possible to perform a wide range of tests regarding the operation of both the platform itself and the applications that run on top of it, before deploying them in the real world. On the other hand, after deployment, a digital twin of the drone is used to detect deviations of the application from the expected behavior, which, in turn, can serve as an indication of bugs that remained undetected during the simulation tests or malfunctions that occur at runtime. We discuss the most important elements of our approach and the simulation and digital twin components of the proposed system. Also, we provide a functional evaluation of our work by presenting its capabilities regarding both offline testing and runtime checking through indicative use cases.

In this work we propose novel algorithms for storing and evaluating sparse grid functions, operating on regular (not spatially adaptive), yet potentially dimensionally adaptive grid types. Besides regular sparse grids our approach includes truncated grids, both with and without boundary grid points. Similar to the implicit data structures proposed in Feuersänger (Dünngitterverfahren für hochdimensionale elliptische partielle Differntialgleichungen. Diploma thesis, Institut für Numerische simulation, Universität Bonn, 2005) and Murarasu et al. (Proceedings of the 16th acm symposium on Principles and Practice of Parallel Programming. Cambridge University Press, New York, 2011, pp. 25–34) we also define a bijective mapping from the multi-dimensional space of grid points to a contiguous index, such that the grid data can be stored in a simple array without overhead. Our approach is especially well-suited to exploit all levels of current commodity hardware, including cache-levels and vector extensions. Furthermore, this kind of data structure is extremely attractive for today’s real-time applications, as it gives direct access to the hierarchical structure of the grids, while outperforming other common sparse grid structures (hash maps, etc.) which do not match with modern compute platforms that well. For dimensionality d ≤10 we achieve good speedups on a 12 core Intel Westmere-EP NUMA platform compared to the results presented in Murarasu et al. (Proceedings of the international Conference on Computational Science—ICCS 2012. Procedia Computer Science, 2012). As we show, this also holds for the results obtained on Nvidia Fermi GPUs, for which we observe speedups over our own CPU implementation of up to 4.5 when dealing with moderate dimensionality. In high-dimensional settings, in the order of tens to hundreds of dimensions, our sparse grid evaluation kernels on the CPU outperform any other known implementation. © Springer international Publishing Switzerland 2014.

Analyzing a communication protocol by means of simulation and real-world experimentation requires careful protocol implementation in both domains. Differences in the implementation may lead to significantly diverging performance results, which may affect the protocol design process adversely. A code-transparent simulation and experimentation framework for Wireless Access Research Platform (WARP) devices is proposed, which is called WARPsim. By extending the simulation engine appropriately, the same application code that runs on WARP devices can be used for simulation. this work studies the implications of this approach using the example of implementing time-critical Medium Access Control Layer (MAC) protocols on WARP devices. In the demonstration, various MAC protocols will be simulated using WARPsim, while changing protocol parameters, but also crucial aspects of the emulated hardware. A graphical representation integrated into the framework allows for an intuitive examination of the protocol behavior.

the research into wireless communication and mobile computing is called to formulate novel smart mobility solutions to improve the quality of a citizen's life in smart cities. In such a context, in this paper we elaborate on the role of technologies like multi-access edge computing (MEC), Internet of things (IoT) messaging protocols, such as Constrained Application Protocol (CoAP) and Message Queue Telemetry Transport (MQTT), and virtualization (i.e., digital twins) in the design of a framework enabling the collection and processing of data about the mobility of commuters and public transport vehicles. Such data have the purpose to feed mobility monitoring and transport planning solutions. A Proof-of-Concept (PoC) is developed to validate the framework under realistic experimental settings. Results in terms of efficiency and effectiveness of the considered messaging protocols are reported.

this paper addresses the challenging problem of guaranteeing quality-of-service (QoS) requirements associated with parallel running queries in distributed stream processing engines. In such platforms, the real-time processing of streaming data often requires executing a set of user-defined queries over continues data flows. However, previous studies showed that guaranteeing QoS enforcement (such as end-to-end response time) for a collection of applications is a complex problem. this paper presents an advanced resource allocation strategy to tackle such a problem by considering the traffic pattern of individual data streams. To properly allocate resource for streaming queries execution, we define a certain number of priority channels to categorize the streaming data across the system. the resource allocation is addressed as an optimization problem where a set of cost functions is defined to achieve the following goals: a) reduce the sum of QoS violation incidents across all applications; b) increase the CPU utilization level, and (c) avoid the additional costs caused by frequent reconfigurations. the proposed solution does not depend on any assumption about the incoming data rate or the query processing time. the performance of the proposed solution is benchmarked, and the experimental results reveal that the proposed scheme increases the overall resource utilization by 23% on average and reduces the QoS violations by 29% against round-robin strategy. It could also prevent QoS violation incidents at different levels by tuning the cost function.

the problem of partitioning irregular graphs for parallel computations on homogeneous systems has been extensively studied. However these solutions fail when the target system architecture exhibits heterogeneity in resource characteristics. With the emergence of technologies such as the Grid, it is imperative to study the partitioning problem in the context of distributed heterogeneous systems. In our Grid model, the system consists of processors with varying computational power that are connected via a non-uniform communication network. We present a novel multilevel partitioning algorithm, called MiniMax, for irregular graphs that takes into account issues pertinent to Grid computing environments. the proposed scheme generates and maps partitions onto a heterogeneous system with the objective of minimizing the maximum execution time of the parallel distributed application. simulation results for both synthetic and real workloads demonstrate that MiniMax generates high quality partitions for various classes of applications targeted for parallel execution in a distributed heterogeneous environment.

the ever-growing advances in science and technology have led to a rapid increase in the complexity of most engineered systems. Cyber-physical Systems (CPSs) are the result of this technology advancement that involves new paradigms, architectures and functionalities derived from different engineering domains. Due to the nature of CPSs, which are composed of many heterogeneous components that constantly interact one another and with the environment, it is difficult to study, explain hypothesis and evaluate design alternatives without using Modeling and simulation (M&S) approaches. M&S is increasingly used in the CPS domain with different objectives; however, its adoption is not easy and straightforward but can lead to pitfalls that need to be recognized and addressed. this paper identifies some important pitfalls deriving from the application of M&S approaches to the CPS study and presents remedies, which are already available in the literature, to prevent and face them.

Virtual reality is slowly transitioning from a specialized laboratory-only technology, to a consumer electronics appliance. In this transition, two interesting research questions amount to how 2D-based content and applications may benefit (or be hurt) by the adoption of 3D-based immersive environments and to how to proficiently support such integration. Acknowledging the relevance of the former, we here consider the latter question, focusing our attention on the diversified family of PC-based simulation tools and platforms. VR-based visualization is, in fact, widely understood and appreciated in the simulation arena, but mainly confined to high performance computing laboratories. Our contribution here aims at characterizing the simulation tools which could benefit from immersive interfaces, along with a general framework and a preliminary implementation which may be put to good use to support their transition from uniquely 2D to blended 2D/3D environments.

the paper presents a new approach and a related software environment for the parallel simulation of swarms of autonomous robots in real time. the software environment has been developed for model based analysis of algorithms to control large swarms of distributed autonomous mobile robots communicating over an unreliable and capacity restricted wireless network. It includes a physical simulation of static obstacles, dynamic obstacles with scriptable movement, soil condition, active jammers, static and dynamic link obstacles with configurable damping as well as noise floors. the simulated ground based mobile robots use control particle belief propagation (C-PBP) as a randomized and sample based model predictive closed loop controller in combination with cost functions to evaluate the situations. We emphasize where the use of shared memory parallelism is beneficial and which inaccuracies in computations are acceptable to increase performance without losing realism.
