It is very good to apply the saliency model in the visual selective attention mechanism to the preprocessing process of image recognition. However, the mechanism of visual perception is still unclear, so this visual saliency model is not ideal. To this end, this paper proposes a novel image recognition approach using multiscale saliency model and GoogLeNet. First, a multi-scale convolutional neural network was taken advantage of constructing multiscale salient maps, which could be used as filters. Second, an original image was combined with the salient maps to generate the filtered image, which highlighted the salient regions and suppressed the background in the image. third, the image recognition task was implemented by adopting the classical GoogLeNet model. In this paper, many experiments were completed by comparing four commonly used evaluation indicators on the standard image database MSRA10K. the experimental results show that the recognition results of the test images based on the proposed method are superior to some state-of-the-art image recognition methods, and are also more approximate to the results of human eye observation. © 2020, Society for Imaging Science and Technology

In the technique of recognizing objects based on camera images, Raindrops that are adsorbed to camera lenses and refracting the incoming light are the main factors of lowering the recognition rate. Existing methods for detecting these droplets mainly define ideal droplet forms and detect areas similar to those defined in the image to determine whether or not to absorb Raindrops in the image. However, since the shape of the droplet varies from lens to lens, it is difficult to determine whether the droplet is absorbed by various cameras by conventional methods. therefore, this paper presents a Deep learning method of detecting Raindrops of various shapes, which were difficult to detect by conventional signal processing methods.

In medical diagnostic analysis, pathological microscopic image is often regarded as a gold standard, and hence the study of pathological microscopic image is of great necessity. High quality microscopic pathological images enable doctors to arrive at correct diagnosis. the pathological microscopic image is an important cornerstone for modernization and computerization of medical procedures. the quality of pathological microscopic images may be degraded due to a variety of reasons. It is difficult to acquire key information, so research for quality assessment of pathological microscopic image is quite necessary. In this paper, we perform a study on subjective quality assessment of pathological microscopic images and investigate whether the existing objective quality measures can be applied to the pathological microscopic images. Concretely, we establish a new pathological microscopic image quality database (PMIQD) which includes 425 pathological microscopic images with different quality degrees. the mean opinion scores rated by nonexperts and experts are calculated afterwards. Besides, we investigate the prediction performance of the existing popular image quality assessment (IQA) algorithms on PMIQD, including 8 no-reference (NR) methods. Experimental results demonstrate that the present objective models do not work well. IQA for pathological microscopic image needs to be developed for predicting the quality rated by nonexperts and experts. © 2020, Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

Motion artifacts are a primary source of magnetic resonance (MR) image quality deterioration with strong repercussions on diagnostic performance. Currently, MR motion correction is carried out either prospectively, with the help of motion tracking systems, or retrospectively by mainly utilizing computationally expensive iterative algorithms. In this paper, we utilize a new adversarial framework, titled MedGAN, for the joint retrospective correction of rigid and non-rigid motion artifacts in different body regions and without the need for a reference image MedGAN utilizes a unique combination of non-adversarial losses and a new generator architecture to capture the textures and fine-detailed structures of the desired artifact-free MR images. Quantitative and qualitative comparisons with other adversarial techniques have illustrated the proposed model performance.

An image analysis procedure for recognizing various skin lesions under contactless skin diagnosis environment is proposed. the proposed procedure is composed of five stages, and experimental results show that issues such as uneven distribution of light are properly addressed, and various skin lesions are effectively discriminated according to their characteristics using the image processing technology and the shadow analysis.

Determining the tonality of the text is a difficult task, the solution of which essentially depends on the context, the field of study and the amount of text data. the analysis shows that the authors in their works do not jointly use the full range of possible transformations on the data and their combinations. the article explores a generalized approach, which consists in sequentially passing through the stages of intelligence analysis, obtaining a basic solution, vectorization, preprocessing, tuning hyperparameters and modeling. the experiments carried out by iterative application of these stages give a positive increase in quality for classical machine learning algorithms and a significant increase for deep learning.

this paper presents a new method for segmenting medical images is based on Hamiltonian quaternions and the associative algebra, method of the active contour model and LPA-ICI (local polynomial approximation - the intersection of confidence intervals) anisotropic gradient. Since for segmentation tasks, the image is usually converted to grayscale, this leads to the loss of important information about color, saturation, and other important information associated color. To solve this problem, we use the quaternion framework to represent a color image to consider all three channels simultaneously when segmenting the RGB image. As a method of noise reduction, adaptive filtering based on local polynomial estimates using the ICI rule is used. the presented new approach allows obtaining clearer and more detailed boundaries of objects of interest. the experiments performed on real medical images (Z-line detection) show that our segmentation method of more efficient compared with the current state-of-art methods. © 2020, Society for Imaging Science and Technology

this paper presents the integration of an UAV for the autonomous monitoring of rice crops. the system integrates image processing and machine learning algorithms to analyze multispectral aerial imagery. Our approach calculates 8 vegetation indices from the images at each stage of rice growth: vegetative, reproductive and ripening. Multivariable regressions and artificial neural networks have been implemented to model the relationship of these vegetation indices against two crop variables: biomass accumulation and leaf nitrogen concentration. Comprehensive experimental tests have been conducted to validate the setup. the results indicate that our system is capable of estimating biomass and nitrogen with an average correlation of 80% and 78% respectively.

Managing energy consumption for computation and communication is a key requirement for flying ad hoc networks (FANET) to prolong the network lifetime. In many applications, the main role of drones is to collect imagery information and relay them to a ground station for further processing and decision making. In this paper, we present a predictive compression policy to maximize the end-to-end image quality penalized by the communication and computation costs. the idea is to predict the number of remaining links to the destination for a given routing algorithm and use it to re-compress image frames at intermediate nodes such that the overall energy consumption is minimized. Numerical results confirm that the performance of this method is within 4% of the global optima and higher than the current fixed-rate policies with a significant margin.

this paper describes some experimental results of sea target detection by Sentinel - 1 SAR imagery and in-situ validation by using terrestrial sensors (Radar and AIS) of the Vessel Traffic Management and Information System (VTMIS) of Bulgaria. images of Western Black Sea region, provided by ESA Sentinels Scientific Data Hub for the period of April 1-st till May 30-th, 2018 are processed for automatic target detection. Detected targets are then compared with Radar and AIS data, collected by the Bulgarian port infrastructure company and its VTMIS. Database includes lists of integrated targets (Radar and AIS), Radar targets only (with no AIS transponder, small non-SOLAS vessels) and AIS targets only (outside coverage area of Radar surveillance subsystem).
