Light field images are represented by capturing a densely projected rays from object to camera sensor. In this paper we propose a novel method for depth estimation from light field epipolar plane image (EPI). Contrary to the conventionally used depth estimation method such as stereo matching, the depth map is generated without high computational complexity via EPI. In order to obtain an accurate depth value from EPI, optimal angular value has to be founded for each pixels. If we consider all the angular candidate value for optimal angle value selection, that cause high computational complexity. Instead we consider all candidate value, reduce the angular candidate by analyzing the EPI patterns. In addition, to improve the quality of estimated depth map from EPI, occlusion area is handled before computing a matching cost. As a pre-processing, average and variance value are computed within specific window size to detect and replace the occlusion area. To validate the efficiency of our algorithm, we experiment with computer graphics and also dense light field data set. the experiment results show that our algorithm achieve better performance than conventionally used depth estimation methods. © 2018 Society for Imaging Science and Technology.

Retinex image enhancement algorithm occupies an important position in eliminating image uneven exposure, low contrast, and smog influence. However, with the increasing of image resolution, the real-time performance of the serial Retinex algorithm has not satisfied the requirements of practical applications. this paper proposes an OpenMP-based parallel Retinex algorithm. the parallelism of the Retinex algorithm is first identified by theoretical analyses. then, the time-consuming sub-algorithms such as Gaussian convolution and exponential transformation, of the serial algorithm are designed and executed in parallel. On Tianhe-2 supercomputer platform, the experimental results show that the speedup of the parallel algorithm is significantly improved, and the test image set achieves an average speedup of 12. It indicates that the parallel algorithm can satisfy the needs of real-time processing in image enhancement field. © 2019, IFIP International Federation for Information processing.

the information of daily garbage diposal can be used to develop many appealing applications in smart cities. this poster introduces DeepCounter, an automotive sensing system to providing a fine-grained spatio-temporal distribution on the amount of disposed garbage bags. In the system, deep learning based image processing is used to automatically count the number of collected garbage bags from the video taken by a camera mounted on the rear of a garbage truck. A prototype system is implemented and experimental evaluation validates the feasibility of our proposal using realistic garbage collection videos in Fujisawa city, Japan.

While classical image processing algorithms were designed for scalar-valued (binary or grayscale) images, new technologies have made it commonplace to work with vector-valued ones. these technologies can involve new types of sensors, as in remote sensing, but also mathematical models leading to an increased cardinality at each pixel. this work analyzes the role of first-order differentiation in vector-valued images;specifically, we explore a novel operator to produce a 2D vector from a Jacobian matrix, in order to represent the variation in a vector-valued image as a planar feature.

with the rapid advancement in the internet, we are now living in the era of big data. the image data over the web has the potential to assist in the development of sophisticated and robust models and algorithms to interact with images and multimedia data. images Data sets are widely used in image processing tasks and analyses. they are in use in various fields including Artificial Intelligence, Data extraction and collection, Computer Vision, Research studies and education. In this research work, we are going to propose a system that crawls the web in a systematic manner using Hadoop MapReduce technique to collect images from millions of web pages on the web. With Celebrity images just a use case, we would be able to search for and retrieve any image tagged with some specific terms. the system uses some simple techniques to reduce noisy images like thumbnails and icons. the proposed system is based on Apache Hadoop and Apache Nutch, an open source web crawler. A customized crawl is run through Apache Nutch in a Hadoop Cluster that searches images for one or more categories on the web and retrieves their links. Next, HIPI, Hadoop image processing Interface is used to download the images and create datasets for an individual category or a dataset of multiple categories.

this paper describes some experimental results of sea target detection by Sentinel - 1 SAR imagery and in-situ validation by using terrestrial sensors (Radar and AIS) of the Vessel Traffic Management and Information System (VTMIS) of Bulgaria. images of Western Black Sea region, provided by ESA Sentinels Scientific Data Hub for the period of April 1-st till May 30-th, 2018 are processed for automatic target detection. Detected targets are then compared with Radar and AIS data, collected by the Bulgarian port infrastructure company and its VTMIS. Database includes lists of integrated targets (Radar and AIS), Radar targets only (with no AIS transponder, small non-SOLAS vessels) and AIS targets only (outside coverage area of Radar surveillance subsystem).

the new needs that have appeared in recent years around the medical image reconstruction field have pushed a greater investment on computing and storage platforms in order to keep up with the increased requirements in performance and quality. To reduce the cost of purchasing and managing these resources novel ubiquituos services have arisen. In this work we describe and evaluate a cloud environment for ubiquitous medical image reconstruction based on Amazon EC2 and a heterogeneous Apache Spark platform. We show an architecture composed by a client application, a front-end server and an isolated cluster per application for the uninterrupted execution of the reconstruction service. We present an execution and cost model for the prediction and configuration of the cloud environment based on performance and monetary costs. the evaluation shows the best configurations in terms of execution time for different types of instances and tuning parameters. Based on these results we compute a Pareto front to study the best solutions for the configuration of the cloud environment with the objective of minimizing both execution time and costs.

Artificial Intelligence through supervised machine learning remains an attractive and popular research area in medical image processing. the objective of such research is often tied to the development of an intelligent computer aided diagnostic system whose aim is to assist physicians in their task of diagnosing diseases. the quality of the resulting system depends largely on the availability of good data for the machine learning algorithm to train on. Training data of a supervised learning process needs to include ground truth, i.e., data that have been correctly annotated by experts. Due to the complex nature of most medical images, human error, experience, and perception play a strong role in the quality of the ground truth. In this paper, we present the results of annotating lumbar spine Magnetic Resonance Imaging images for automatic image segmentation and propose confidence and consistency metrics to measure the quality and variability of the resulting ground truth data, respectively.

Line follower robots can be used for many important robotic and industrial tasks. One of the most important factors in these methods is the computational requirement of the algorithm. the paper presents a novel method for the line following problem using image processing technique. Our main goal is to find an efficient way with real-time computing to track a line using a camera-equipped robot. To measure the effectiveness of the presented method, we compare two line following robots with the line tracking method being the only difference between them. the first robot uses the proposed camera-based method and the other robot has reflective optical sensors in order to determine the position of the line. these real life experiments demonstrate the efficiency of the presented method.

image classification is one of the most important fundamental research topics in machine learning and image processing. Recently, hypergraph learning, which can model the high-order relationship of samples and fusion multimodal features, has received the attention of many researchers. However, existing multimodal hypergraph learning methods face two problems, i.e., how to construct hyperedges and how to determine the weights of hyperedges. this paper proposes an adaptive multimodal hypergraph learning method (AMH) to address these two challenges. AMH uses multiple neighborhoods method to avoid generating a k-uniform hyperedge, and optimizes the weights with the penalty function method to take the initial labels into consideration. the experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of AMH compared with the stateof-the-art methods.
